Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE BENEATH THE HOUSEBy sunrise, we had left the safe house.

The attacker was gone.

The ledger remained.

Isabella and I drove to the only place I had deliberately avoided for five years.

Our childhood home.

The Montgomery estate had been vacant since our father's death.

Mother had moved to the coast.

Isabella married Jasper.

And I never went back.

Until now.

The gates opened automatically when I entered the driveway.

I hadn't expected them to work.

Isabella stared at me.

"Who still pays the property bills?"

"I do."

She turned.

"You've been paying for this house?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

I didn't answer.

Because I knew there was something hidden beneath it.

I just never knew what.

Inside, dust covered everything.

The piano.

The dining room.

Our father's study.

The old family portraits.

Isabella stopped beneath the largest one.

Our parents stood together.

I stood beside them at sixteen.

Isabella was ten.

Father's hand rested on my shoulder.

He looked proud.

Now I noticed something I'd never seen before.

A tiny black mark beneath the frame.

Three circles.

I pulled the painting away.

Behind it was a keypad.

Isabella stared.

"Did you know about this?"

"No."

I typed our father's birthday.

Wrong.

Mother's birthday.

Wrong.

My birthday.

Wrong.

Isabella whispered:

"Try the day he died."

I did.

The lock opened.

A wall panel slid sideways.

Behind it was a narrow staircase.

Going down.

We descended twenty feet beneath the house.

The room below was perfectly preserved.

Computers.

File cabinets.

Monitors.

Hard drives.

Maps.

Photographs.

A private command center.

Isabella stopped breathing.

"Our father had a bunker."

"Not a bunker."

I walked toward the main desk.

"A control room."

There were files everywhere.

And a single envelope with my name on it.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My father's handwriting.

Caleb,

If you are reading this, then the people I feared have finally reached Isabella.

I sat down.

He had written the letter years earlier.

He said the Montgomery family had been involved in private financial operations spanning decades.

Not criminal on paper.

But built around hidden ownership.

Silent partners.

Companies with no public connections.

Money that moved through foundations and investment trusts.

He admitted he had tried to leave.

Someone refused to let him.

Then came the sentence that made Isabella cover her mouth.

Your mother knows the truth.

I looked at her.

"No."

She shook her head.

"Our mother?"

The letter continued.

If they force you to choose between your sister's safety and the truth, choose Isabella.

Always.

The letter ended with a final instruction.

Never trust the man who calls himself the Keeper.

I had no idea who that meant.

Then a monitor on the desk turned on.

A recorded video began.

Our father appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

Terrified.

"If you're watching this, Caleb, I'm already gone."

He stared directly into the camera.

"Jasper Blackwood is not the architect."

Isabella grabbed my arm.

Father continued.

"He is only the visible face."

The screen flickered.

"The real architect has been inside this family longer than Jasper has."

Then the video stopped.

A second video loaded automatically.

Our mother appeared.

She was crying.

"I should have told you."

The recording ended.

Isabella whispered:

"Why would Mom know?"

Before I could answer, the security system displayed a new alert.

MOTION DETECTED.

Second floor.

Someone was inside the house.

I reached for my weapon.

We climbed the stairs.

The bedroom hallway was empty.

Then Isabella pointed.

Mother's old room.

The door was open.

Inside, the bed had been torn apart.

Drawers were open.

Someone had searched everything.

On the mirror, written in black ink, were five words.

SHE LIED TO BOTH OF YOU.

Isabella stepped backward.

"Caleb..."

I saw movement outside.

A silhouette crossed the window.

I ran.

The figure disappeared into the trees.

But on the floor beneath the window lay a single photograph.

Our mother.

Standing beside Jasper.

And beside them was the man from the harbor.

May you like

On the back of the photograph was a message.

ASK YOUR MOTHER WHY SHE KILLED YOUR FATHER.
