Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN IN THE SHADOWSThe rain began just before midnight.

Across the city, the Blackwood mansion stood under a sky filled with dark clouds, its enormous windows reflecting occasional flashes of lightning.
Inside, Ariana Blackwood stood completely still.
Her father had ended the phone call ten minutes ago, but his final words continued to echo in her head.
What are you going to do about your sister?
Ariana stared at the empty fireplace.
Brianna was alive.
Brianna had returned.
And worse than that, Damian had chosen her.
Ariana clenched her fists.
"No."
She whispered the word.
"No, no, no."
She began pacing again.
She had spent years believing that everything belonged to her.
The Blackwood name.
The family fortune.
The engagement.
Damian.
Even the future everyone had planned for her.
Then Brianna had stolen it all without even trying.
Ariana stopped in front of the mirror.
Her reflection looked exhausted.
Her mascara had run.
Her hair was messy.
But her eyes were no longer filled with tears.
They were cold.
Determined.
She picked up her phone and called someone whose number she had not contacted in years.
The person answered after the third ring.
"You?"
Ariana smiled faintly.
"I need a favor."
There was a long silence.
"What kind of favor?"
"The kind that requires someone to disappear."
The next morning, Damian woke before sunrise.
Brianna was asleep beside him.
He turned toward her and watched her quietly.
For months, he had believed his wife was Ariana.
He had questioned everything.
Why she sometimes looked frightened.
Why she seemed to know things Ariana should never have known.
Why she cried whenever he mentioned the wedding.
Now he finally understood.
Brianna had been living with a secret that could have destroyed both their families.
Damian gently brushed a strand of hair from her face.
He made a promise to himself.
No more lies.
No more secrets.
He got out of bed and walked to his study.
His chief legal adviser, Marcus, was already waiting.
"I want every document connected to the marriage reviewed," Damian said.
Marcus nodded.
"The marriage certificate?"
"Everything."
"Property transfers?"
"Everything."
"Financial records?"
"Everything."
Damian looked at him.
"And I want a complete investigation into the Blackwood family."
Marcus hesitated.
"That includes your former fiancée?"
"It includes everyone."
Marcus opened his folder.
"There is something strange."
Damian's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Marcus placed a document on the desk.
"Your wedding license was altered."
Damian stared at it.
"What do you mean?"
"Someone submitted a correction request three months ago."
"Who?"
Marcus shook his head.
"The signature is yours."
Damian's expression changed.
"I never signed this."
Marcus slowly looked up.
"That's exactly why I thought you should see it."
Damian picked up the document.
A forged signature.
Someone had been changing official records while he was unaware.
Then Marcus added quietly,
"There's something else."
"What?"
"The request was submitted using a private legal office."
"Whose?"
Marcus hesitated.
"The Blackwood family's lawyer."
Damian's blood ran cold.
At that exact moment, Brianna woke up.
She reached for him.
"Damian?"
He turned toward the doorway.
Brianna smiled faintly.
"Where were you?"
He immediately walked toward her.
But before he could answer, his phone rang.
Marcus was calling again.
Damian answered.
"What happened?"
Marcus's voice sounded different this time.
Urgent.
"I found the original marriage file."
"And?"
"There was a photograph attached."
"What photograph?"
Marcus took a breath.
"The photograph from your wedding day."
Damian frowned.
"I've seen those."
"Not this one."
Marcus lowered his voice.
"It shows Ariana leaving the church that morning."
Damian froze.
"And she wasn't alone."
"Who was with her?"
There was a pause.
Then Marcus said the one thing Damian never expected.
"Your brother."
Damian's face went pale.
He slowly looked at Brianna.
And for the first time, he wondered whether the woman who had run away from the wedding had been planning to return all along.
Outside the mansion, a black car stopped across the street.
Ariana stepped out.
She stared at Damian's house.

Then she whispered,
"Let the game begin."
