Chapter 13: The Man Who Stole the Walker Legacy

Ethan did not say anything after Margaret finished speaking.
He couldn't.
There were moments in life when anger was too simple a feeling.
This was not anger.
It was confusion.
Pain.
A thousand unanswered questions crashing together.
His mother had been there.
That night.
The night his father died.
She had seen something.
She had run away.
And for years, Ethan believed he lost his father because of fate.
A medical condition.
An accident of life.
But now he knew.
Someone had been standing beside Robert Walker during his final moments.
Someone who knew the truth.
Someone who had allowed an entire family to live inside a lie.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Ethan's voice was barely above a whisper.
Margaret looked down.
"I wanted to."
"Then why didn't you?"
"Because Thomas threatened me."
The answer stopped him.
"What?"
Margaret wiped her tears.
"After your father's death, Thomas found me."
"When?"
"Two days after the funeral."
Ethan stared.
"What did he say?"
Margaret's hands trembled.
"He told me he knew I had been there."
Claire looked at her.
"He knew you saw him?"
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
A cold silence followed.
"He told me if I spoke, he would make sure everyone believed I was responsible."
Ethan frowned.
"But why would anyone believe that?"
Margaret laughed bitterly.
"Because everything already pointed toward me."
She counted on her fingers.
"I argued with Robert."
"I had signed documents."
"I was the last person known to see him alive."
A pause.
"And I had a financial problem."
Ethan closed his eyes.
It was perfect.
A carefully designed trap.
Thomas did not need to prove Margaret was guilty.
He only needed everyone to doubt her.
"Why didn't you tell the police?"
Margaret looked at him.
"Because I was afraid."
Ethan looked away.
There it was again.
The same answer.
But this time, he understood something.
Fear did not always make people weak.
Sometimes fear made people make impossible choices.
Bad choices.
Choices that hurt others.
But still born from fear.
"I thought protecting you meant keeping you away from this."
Margaret's voice cracked.
"I thought if you never knew, Thomas would leave you alone."
Ethan shook his head.
"You protected me from the truth."
A pause.
"But you also protected the person who hurt Dad."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"I know."
The next morning, Ethan, Claire, and Daniel met at Walker Construction.
The investigation had changed completely.
They were no longer trying to prove Patricia wanted control.
That part was obvious.
Now they were looking at something much bigger.
A murder.
A stolen legacy.
A man who had spent years hiding behind trust.
Thomas Reed.
Daniel placed several files on the table.
"We found more information."
Ethan opened the first document.
Thomas Reed.
Former vice president of Walker Construction.
Twenty-eight years with the company.
Trusted advisor.
Family friend.
But underneath the professional history was another story.
Hidden investments.
Secret partnerships.
Unknown accounts.
"How did nobody see this?"
Daniel sighed.
"Because Thomas was careful."
Claire looked at the documents.
"He built trust before he betrayed it."
Daniel nodded.
"Exactly."
Ethan looked at the timeline.
Thomas became close to Robert.
Thomas gained access to company decisions.
Thomas became close to Margaret.
Then Robert discovered something.
And died.
The pattern was obvious.
But Ethan needed proof.
Not suspicion.
Proof.
That afternoon, something unexpected happened.
Margaret arrived at Ethan's house.
She carried a small box.
"I found this."
Ethan looked at it.
"What is it?"
"Something Robert gave me."
She opened the box.
Inside was a watch.
His father's watch.
Ethan immediately recognized it.
Robert wore it every day.
"He gave this to you?"
Margaret nodded.
"The night he left."
Ethan looked confused.
"Why?"
Margaret touched the watch.
"Because he knew something was wrong."
She turned it over.
On the back was a small engraving.
Ethan looked closer.
A set of numbers.
"Is this a date?"
Margaret shook her head.
"No."
She looked at Daniel.
"Your father liked codes."
Daniel examined it.
"These are coordinates."
Everyone became silent.
"Coordinates to where?"
Daniel entered them into his computer.
A location appeared.
Outside Raleigh.
An old storage facility.
Ethan looked at Claire.
Another hidden place.
Another secret.
Robert Walker had spent his final days preparing.
Not running.
Preparing.
They arrived at the storage facility that evening.
The building was abandoned.
The lock was old.
But the key inside the watch opened it.
Inside was a small room.
Unlike the hidden office, this place was not meant for working.
It was meant for evidence.
Boxes filled the shelves.
Documents.
Recordings.
Photos.
Everything Robert had collected.
Ethan opened the first box.
Inside were copies of Thomas's financial records.
The second box contained emails.
The third contained something that made Ethan freeze.
A photo.
Thomas Reed shaking hands with someone.
Someone familiar.
Patricia Cole.
But the date shocked him.
It was taken fifteen years ago.
Long before Patricia appeared in their lives.
They had been connected all along.
Daniel looked through the papers.
"This is bigger than we thought."
Ethan nodded.
"They weren't partners recently."
"No."
Daniel looked at him.
"They were planning this for decades."
Claire picked up another document.
"Ethan."
He turned.
She showed him a contract.
His face changed.
It was an agreement.
Between Thomas Reed and Patricia Cole.
The title:
"Walker Legacy Transition Plan."
The purpose was clear.
Gain control of Walker Construction.
Remove Robert.
Control Ethan.
Use marriage, business, and reputation.
Everything.
But then Ethan noticed one line.
A line that made his blood run cold.
"Final control will transfer after Ethan Walker reaches legal ownership age."
He stared.
"They were waiting for me."
Daniel nodded.
"They didn't want your father removed only because of the company."
Claire understood.
"They needed Ethan."
Ethan felt sick.
His entire life.
Every major decision.
Every relationship.
Had someone been watching him as part of a plan?
Then a sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone froze.
Daniel turned off the light.
Footsteps approached.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone entered the building.
A familiar voice echoed.
"You always were curious, Ethan."
Ethan's heart stopped.
Thomas Reed.
The man who had disappeared for years.
The man who destroyed his father's trust.
The man who had been hiding behind shadows.
He stepped into the room.
Older.
Calmer.
Still carrying the same confidence.
"Ethan."
Thomas smiled.
"You look exactly like your father."
Ethan stepped forward.
"You killed him."
Thomas did not answer immediately.
Instead, he looked around the room.
"Robert was a great man."
A pause.
"But he was never meant to keep control forever."
Ethan's fists tightened.
"You destroyed my family."
Thomas shook his head.
"No."
He looked at Margaret.
"Your family destroyed itself."
Margaret stepped forward.
"You lied to me."
Thomas looked at her.
"I gave you what you wanted."
Her face changed.
"What?"
"Control."
A pause.
"Respect."
Thomas smiled.
"You wanted to stop being Robert Walker's shadow."
Margaret looked devastated.
"And you used that."
"Yes."
Thomas did not deny it.
"I used everyone's weakness."
Ethan stared.
"You admit it?"
Thomas smiled.
"Why wouldn't I?"
He looked at the documents.
"You think truth matters?"
A pause.
"Truth belongs to whoever controls the story."
Then he reached into his coat.
Everyone froze.
But he did not pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a folder.
And placed it on the table.
"Before you judge me..."
Thomas looked at Ethan.
"You should read what your father wrote about you."
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
Thomas smiled.
"Your father knew you were not ready to lead."
The words hit.
Thomas stepped closer.
"He left you a company."
A pause.
"But he never believed you could protect it."
Ethan stared at the folder.
A final document.
A final secret.
And maybe...
the truth about what Robert Walker really thought of his son.
Thomas walked away.
Leaving Ethan with the one question he never expected to ask.
May you like
Did his father believe in him?
Or had even Robert Walker been preparing for Ethan to fail?
