Chapter 10: The Person Robert Walker Exposed

Ethan stared at the document.
He read the same sentence again.
Then again.
But the words did not change.
His father's final investigation.
The truth Robert Walker discovered before his death.
The betrayal that came from inside the family.
His eyes moved toward the bottom of the page.
The name was hidden beneath a black line.
A redacted section.
Someone had deliberately covered it.
Daniel immediately noticed.
"Someone removed part of the document."
Ethan looked at him.
"Can you recover it?"
Daniel leaned closer.
"I don't know."
Patricia watched from across the table.
For the first time, she looked nervous.
Not because of the document.
Because of what might be revealed.
Ethan noticed.
"You know something."
Patricia remained silent.
"Patricia."
She looked at him.
"You have spent years manipulating people."
His voice was cold.
"Don't start pretending you don't know what's happening."
Patricia smiled faintly.
"You think this document will give you all the answers?"
"I think my father died looking for them."
Patricia looked away.
That small movement told Ethan everything.
She knew more than she admitted.
Daniel began working on the file.
The room remained silent except for the sound of the keyboard.
Then Ethan noticed something.
A timestamp.
The file had been created two days before Robert died.
Two days.
Not months.
Not years.
Two days.
His father had been very close to the truth.
"What happened two days before Dad died?"
Nobody answered.
Ethan looked at Margaret's empty chair.
Then remembered.
The argument.
The tension.
The fear on his mother's face.
But now something bothered him.
If Margaret was innocent...
Why did she hide everything?
Why did she let everyone believe she was responsible?
The answer was painful.
Because sometimes innocent people still make terrible choices.
That evening, Ethan returned home with Claire.
Neither of them spoke much during the drive.
There were too many questions.
Too many possibilities.
When they entered the house, Noah ran toward them.
"Daddy!"
Ethan smiled and picked him up.
For a few seconds, the chaos disappeared.
Claire watched them.
She knew Ethan needed that moment.
A reminder of what he was fighting for.
Not revenge.
Not power.
Family.
Later that night, after Noah fell asleep, Ethan and Claire sat at the kitchen table.
The document was open between them.
"I don't like this," Claire said.
Ethan looked up.
"What?"
"The fact that someone wanted your father to look in the wrong direction."
Ethan nodded.
"You think someone framed your mother?"
"I think someone knew exactly how to make everyone suspect her."
Claire studied the page.
"Who knew about your father's investigation?"
Ethan thought.
"The board members."
"Anyone else?"
"My mother."
"Patricia?"
"Maybe."
Claire looked at him.
"What about someone who had access to the company?"
Ethan froze.
A thought appeared.
Not a person.
A possibility.
"Someone inside."
Claire nodded.
"Exactly."
Before Ethan could answer, his phone rang.
Daniel.
He answered immediately.
"Did you recover the file?"
A pause.
Then Daniel's voice became serious.
"Yes."
Ethan stood.
"What did you find?"
"The hidden name."
His heart started beating faster.
"Who was it?"
Daniel was silent for a moment.
Then:
"Ethan..."
The hesitation frightened him.
"Tell me."
Daniel lowered his voice.
"The person your father investigated was..."
A pause.
"Robert Walker's own business partner."
Ethan frowned.
"Business partner?"
"Yes."
"Who?"
Daniel answered.
"Thomas Reed."
The name meant something.
Ethan's face changed.
Thomas Reed.
His father's closest friend.
The man who attended family dinners.
The man who helped Ethan after Robert's death.
The man who stood beside Margaret at the funeral.
"No."
Claire looked at him.
"Who is he?"
Ethan sat down slowly.
"Someone my father trusted."
Daniel continued.
"There is more."
"What?"
"Thomas Reed wasn't only moving money."
Ethan gripped the phone.
"What was he doing?"
"He was building a case to remove Robert from control of his own company."
Silence.
Ethan felt sick.
"Why?"
Daniel answered:
"Because Thomas believed Walker Construction should have belonged to him."
The pieces began connecting.
The hidden documents.
The company pressure.
The manipulation.
Someone had been trying to control Walker Construction for years.
Patricia wanted access.
Margaret wanted protection.
But Thomas Reed...
Thomas wanted ownership.
"Where is he now?"
Daniel paused.
"That's the strange part."
"What?"
"He disappeared shortly after Robert died."
Ethan looked at Claire.
"Disappeared?"
"Yes."
"Nobody found him?"
"No."
The call ended.
Ethan remained silent.
Then Claire asked:
"What are you thinking?"
Ethan looked toward the window.
"I think we have been looking at the wrong enemy."
The next morning, Ethan went to visit Margaret.
He found her sitting alone in the garden behind her house.
She looked tired.
Older.
Not the powerful woman everyone feared.
Just a mother.
A mother who had made mistakes.
When she saw him, she looked surprised.
"I didn't expect you."
"I need answers."
Margaret nodded.
"I know."
Ethan sat across from her.
"Thomas Reed."
The color disappeared from her face.
That reaction was enough.
"You know him."
Margaret looked away.
"Yes."
"How well?"
A long silence.
"Very well."
Ethan's stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
Margaret whispered:
"Thomas was your father's best friend."
"I know."
She shook her head.
"No."
She looked at him.
"You don't know everything."
A pause.
"Thomas was also the person who helped me after Robert died."
Ethan frowned.
"Helped you?"
"With the company."
Margaret looked down.
"He told me I was too emotional. He told me I needed someone experienced."
Ethan felt cold.
"He was controlling you."
Margaret nodded slowly.
"I didn't see it."
For the first time, Ethan saw something different in his mother's eyes.
Regret.
Real regret.
"He was always there."
Margaret continued.
"Whenever I doubted myself, he had an answer."
She laughed bitterly.
"I thought he was helping me."
Ethan understood.
Thomas did not attack directly.
He waited.
He became necessary.
He became trusted.
Then he controlled.
Just like Patricia.
Just like Margaret had done.
Different methods.
Same poison.
"Did Dad know?"
Margaret nodded.
"Eventually."
"What happened?"
She looked toward the trees.
"Robert confronted him."
"When?"
"The night before he died."
Ethan stopped.
The missing piece.
The argument.
The last conversation.
His father was not fighting with Margaret.
He was fighting with Thomas.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Margaret closed her eyes.
"Because Thomas convinced me Robert was paranoid."
Ethan stared.
"And you believed him."
"Yes."
A tear fell.
"And I have regretted it every day since."
The silence between them was heavy.
Then Margaret reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small object.
An old key.
"I kept this."
Ethan looked at it.
"What is it?"
"Your father's private office."
Ethan frowned.
"His office was destroyed after his death."
Margaret shook her head.
"No."
She handed him the key.
"The official office was."
A pause.
"Your father had another one."
Ethan stared.
"Where?"
Margaret looked at him.
"Somewhere Thomas Reed never knew existed."
For the first time in days, Ethan felt something other than anger.
Hope.
Because maybe Robert Walker had not lost.
Maybe he had prepared for this.
Maybe he knew someone would try to erase the truth.
Margaret stood.
"I should have told you years ago."
Ethan looked at her.
"Yes."
She nodded.
"I know."
A moment passed.
Then Ethan said:
"But if we find what Dad left behind..."
Margaret looked at him.
"I know."
Her voice was quiet.
"We finish what he started."
That night, Ethan, Claire, and Margaret stood in front of an abandoned building outside Raleigh.
A place nobody knew existed.
A place Robert Walker had hidden from everyone.
Ethan inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
The door opened slowly.
Inside was darkness.
Dust.
And a room untouched for years.
In the center was a desk.
On top of it was a single envelope.
With Ethan's name written on it.
And beneath it...
A photograph.
A photograph that made Ethan freeze.
Because standing beside Robert Walker in the picture...
was Thomas Reed.
And beside Thomas...
was someone Ethan never expected to see.
Someone who changed everything.
His own mother.
Years before Robert died.
The three of them had been working together.
May you like
Or at least...
that was what the photograph appeared to show.
