CHAPTER 9: THE RING OF BETRAYAL

Nobody moved.
The room had become a frozen photograph.
Every person stared at the same thing.
The silver ring.
The ring that belonged to Sterling Industries.
The symbol of loyalty.
The symbol of trust.
The symbol that had been passed down through generations.
Richard's eyes moved slowly from face to face.
Marina.
Hayes.
The guards.
Luna.
Then...
The old butler.
Mr. Collins.
The elderly man's hand was trembling.
Not from fear.
From recognition.
Richard noticed it instantly.
"Collins..."
The old servant looked up.
For fifty years, he had stood inside Sterling Manor.
He had served Richard's grandfather.
Then his father.
Then Richard himself.
He was the man who knew every hallway.
Every locked door.
Every family secret.
"Show me your hand."
Collins didn't move.
The silence became unbearable.
"Mr. Collins."
Richard's voice hardened.
"Show me your hand."
Slowly...
The old butler lifted his arm.
A silver ring rested on his finger.
The same design.
The same black stone.
The same Sterling emblem.
Marina stepped backward.
"No..."
Collins closed his eyes.
"I was hoping this day would never come."
Hayes immediately raised his weapon.
"Step away from him."
The guards surrounded the old man.
But Richard didn't move.
His mind was racing.
For years...
Collins had been there.
At every family dinner.
Every business meeting.
Every important moment.
He had poured his father's coffee.
He had prepared Richard's childhood room.
He had held Ethan when he was born.
Could this man really have been hiding the truth all along?
"Why?"
Richard whispered.
Collins looked older than ever.
"Because your father asked me to."
Everyone froze.
Richard frowned.
"What?"
"Edward knew the truth would destroy you."
"My father knew?"
Collins nodded.
"He knew the people hunting him were closer than anyone imagined."
"Then why didn't he tell me?"
"Because he believed you would do exactly what you're doing now."
Richard stepped forward.
"And what's that?"
"Run straight into the fire."
The old butler looked at Luna.
"She was never supposed to find you."
Richard's expression changed.
"What does that mean?"
Collins sighed.
"It means Luna was not brought here tonight."
"She was sent."
The little girl's face became pale.
"No..."
Collins looked at her sadly.
"Your mother would never have wanted this."
Richard turned sharply.
"Luna?"
The girl said nothing.
Her hands began shaking.
"Tell me the truth."
Luna looked at the floor.
"I didn't know."
"Didn't know what?"
"That he was still alive."
The room went silent.
Richard stared.
"Who?"
Before Luna could answer...
The lights went out again.
This time, nobody panicked.
Because everyone knew.
Someone was controlling the mansion.
A soft clicking sound echoed from the ceiling.
Then a projector activated.
An image appeared on the stone wall.
A man.
Older.
Scarred.
Sitting behind a desk.
Richard stopped breathing.
Because he knew that face.
It was impossible.
But he knew it.
"Father..."
Edward Sterling looked directly into the camera.
"Richard."
His recorded voice filled the chamber.
"If you're watching this..."
"Then my plan failed."
Richard stepped closer.
The image continued.
"I need you to understand something."
"The person you think is your enemy..."
"may be the only person who tried to save you."
The video flickered.
A second image appeared.
A younger Edward.
Standing beside a woman.
A woman Richard had never seen before.
Luna's mother.
Then another figure entered the frame.
A man wearing the same silver ring.
But it wasn't Collins.
It was someone younger.
Someone Richard recognized.
His blood turned cold.
Because the man standing beside his father...
Was himself.
Twenty years younger.
And beside him...
Was a little girl wearing a red coat.
The same little girl from his forgotten memory.
The child he thought he had lost.
Edward's voice continued:
"Richard..."
"You have spent years believing you lost your daughter in an accident."
"But that is the first lie they told you."
The video froze.
The chamber became silent.
Marina looked at Richard.
"What daughter?"
Richard couldn't answer.
His hands began trembling.
Because somewhere deep inside...
A memory was returning.
Not a dream.
Not a fragment.
A truth.
A little girl calling him "Daddy."
A little girl with the same eyes as Luna.
Then Edward's final words played:
"Your daughter did not die."
"She was taken."
"And the person who helped them take her..."
"...is the person you trusted most."
The projector shut off.
At the exact same moment...
A gunshot exploded in the chamber.
Everyone turned.
One of the guards collapsed.
And standing behind him...
Holding a smoking weapon...
May you like
Was someone nobody expected.
Detective Daniel Hayes.
