CHAPTER 12: THE MEMORY THAT WAS STOLEN

The silver ring felt heavier than it should have.
Richard stood in the middle of the hidden chamber, surrounded by people who no longer knew whether to trust him.
The message on the screen had disappeared.
But the words remained.
THE PERSON YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IS NOT OUTSIDE YOUR FAMILY.
THEY ARE INSIDE IT.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone had reached the same terrifying conclusion.
Maybe the enemy wasn't hiding in the shadows.
Maybe the enemy had been sitting at the dinner table all along.
Marina looked at Richard.
Not with fear.
With confusion.
"Richard..."
He looked down at the ring in his hand.
"I don't remember having this."
Detective Hayes watched him carefully.
"Where did you find it?"
"In my father's journal."
"Why didn't you mention it earlier?"
Richard didn't answer.
Because he didn't know.
That was the problem.
For the first time in his life...
He couldn't trust his own memories.
Alexander Vale slowly walked toward the old desk.
"There is something your father wanted you to see."
Richard turned.
"What?"
Vale opened one of the drawers.
Inside was an old cassette tape.
No label.
No date.
Only one word written across it.
REMEMBER
Hayes stared.
"A tape?"
Alexander nodded.
"Your father didn't trust digital records."
"Why?"
"Because digital things can be changed."
He looked around the room.
"Memories are easier to manipulate."
Richard felt a cold sensation.
"What are you saying?"
Alexander inserted the tape into an ancient player hidden beneath the desk.
The machine clicked.
Static filled the chamber.
Then...
A familiar voice.
Edward Sterling.
Richard stopped breathing.
"My son..."
The recording began.
"If you are hearing this, then you have discovered the truth I spent my life hiding."
A pause.
"I need you to understand something."
"I did not erase your memories because I wanted to hurt you."
"I did it because I wanted you to survive."
Richard stepped closer.
"What?"
The recording continued.
"There was a night when you learned everything."
"You discovered the children."
"You discovered the organization."
"And you discovered who was responsible."
Richard felt his chest tighten.
Images flashed through his mind.
A dark room.
A locked door.
A young version of himself.
A little girl crying.
Then...
A man's voice.
"Forget this."
The memory disappeared.
Richard grabbed the edge of the desk.
"Stop..."
Marina immediately held his arm.
"Richard?"
He shook his head.
"I've heard that voice before."
Hayes looked at him.
"Whose?"
Richard closed his eyes.
"I don't know."
The recording continued.
"After that night, I made a choice."
"I allowed them to believe you knew nothing."
"Because the only way to protect someone from a secret..."
"...is to make them forget they ever had it."
The tape suddenly distorted.
Then Edward whispered:
"But I made one mistake."
Static.
A long pause.
"I trusted the wrong person."
Everyone froze.
The tape continued.
"The person who helped erase Richard's memory..."
"...was not a stranger."
"...was someone he loved."
The machine clicked.
The recording ended.
Silence.
Richard slowly looked around.
His eyes stopped on Marina.
Then Luna.
Then Collins.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had a secret.
But one person looked away immediately.
Mr. Collins.
Richard noticed.
"Collins."
The old butler remained silent.
"Look at me."
Slowly...
The old man raised his eyes.
And Richard saw something he had never seen before.
Guilt.
Deep.
Ancient.
Painful.
"You know."
Collins swallowed.
"I know what happened that night."
"Tell me."
"I can't."
Richard stepped forward.
"You served my family for fifty years."
"Then you owe me the truth."
Collins closed his eyes.
"When your father discovered the organization..."
"He knew someone close to him was involved."
"Someone who had access to the family."
Richard's voice became colder.
"Who?"
The old butler looked at him.
And whispered:
"Your mother."
The entire room froze.
Richard stared.
"My mother died when I was young."
"Yes."
"She couldn't have been involved."
Collins looked away.
"That is what you were meant to believe."
Richard felt the ground disappear beneath him.
"No."
"She loved us."
"She did."
Collins nodded.
"But love and secrets can exist in the same heart."
Before Richard could respond...
A loud crash echoed from upstairs.
Everyone turned.
A guard's voice screamed through the radio.
"INTRUDER!"
Then static.
Hayes grabbed his weapon.
"Someone breached the mansion."
Richard looked toward the hidden exit.
"How?"
Every door was locked.
Every camera was active.
Every guard was positioned.
Then Luna quietly spoke.
"They didn't come in."
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed toward the floor.
"They were already here."
A slow creaking sound came from above them.
The ceiling.
A hidden panel opened.
Dust fell.
Then...
A person dropped into the chamber.
Everyone raised their weapons.
The figure stood slowly.
Wearing a dark coat.
Holding a photograph.
Richard stared.
Because the face looking back at him...
Was his own.
But younger.
Much younger.
The stranger smiled.
"Hello, Richard."
"I've been waiting twenty years to meet you again."
Richard couldn't move.
May you like
Because the impossible person standing before him...
Was himself.
