Chapter 13: The Person They Invited Inside

The kitchen felt smaller than before.

Not because the walls had moved.

Because suddenly, every person inside the house felt like a possible enemy.

The broken glass remained on the floor.

The note remained in Henry's hand.

"You are searching for the person who entered your house."

"But you should be searching for the person who was invited."

Nobody spoke.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to ask the question everyone was thinking.

Who?

Who had been invited?

Who had been trusted?

Who had been close enough to know everything?

Daniel looked at the people around him.

His mother.

His father.

His uncle.

His aunt.

Richard.

Henry.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had hidden something.

But only one person had been guiding the family toward this moment.

"Henry," Daniel said slowly.

Everyone looked at him.

"What?"

"You said someone has been controlling this for decades."

Henry nodded.

"Yes."

"Then how do we know that person isn't one of you?"

The question hit the room like a stone.

Richard looked away.

Henry remained silent.

William stared at his son.

"Daniel."

"No, Dad."

Daniel's voice was firm.

"Look at what happened tonight."

He pointed around the room.

"The watch appeared."

"The old documents appeared."

"Richard suddenly came back."

"Henry suddenly appeared."

He looked at everyone.

"Someone has been moving pieces around this entire time."

Silence.

"And we keep trusting people who show up with answers."

Nobody argued.

Because Daniel was right.

Even the truth could be dangerous if it came from the wrong person.

Henry slowly nodded.

"You are thinking correctly."

Daniel frowned.

"You're not offended?"

"No."

Henry looked tired.

"After everything my family has done, I would be more worried if you trusted me immediately."

Sophie watched Henry carefully.

Then she asked:

"Can I ask something?"

Everyone looked at her.

Henry smiled slightly.

"Of course."

"Why did you wait until now?"

The question surprised him.

"What do you mean?"

"You knew the truth."

Henry looked at the watch.

"Yes."

"You knew Grandpa was innocent."

"Yes."

"You knew Grandma wasn't the person who stole it."

"Yes."

Sophie tilted her head.

"Then why didn't you tell everyone before?"

The room became silent.

Because it was the exact question nobody had asked.

Henry looked at the little girl.

And for the first time, his confidence disappeared.

"Because I was afraid."

Nobody expected that.

"You were afraid?"

Henry nodded.

"I spent thirty-five years hiding."

He looked at William.

"I watched my brother hate me."

A pause.

"I watched his family grow without me."

His voice became softer.

"And I convinced myself staying away was protecting them."

Sophie looked at him.

"But it wasn't."

Henry smiled sadly.

"No."

"It was just hiding."

The answer was simple.

But powerful.

Because everyone in the room realized something.

Nearly every tragedy in their family started the same way.

Someone hiding something.

Someone refusing to speak.

Someone deciding silence was safer than truth.

Then Eleanor suddenly stood.

"I know who it is."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

Her face was pale.

But her voice was steady.

"I know who has been moving the pieces."

William looked at his wife.

"Eleanor?"

She looked at Henry.

"You said someone was invited inside."

Henry nodded.

Eleanor looked toward the doorway.

"Then it was not someone who entered tonight."

She swallowed.

"It was someone who was already part of this family."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who?"

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Then said:

"Someone who knew all our secrets."

The room waited.

"Someone who knew about William's real father."

Silence.

"Someone who knew about Richard."

A pause.

"Someone who knew about Michael."

Everyone looked around.

Claire whispered:

"Who?"

Eleanor opened her eyes.

And looked directly at Claire.

The room froze.

Claire stepped back.

"No."

Eleanor's voice trembled.

"I'm sorry."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

Daniel looked shocked.

"Aunt Claire?"

Claire stared at Eleanor.

"You think it's me?"

Nobody answered.

Because even Claire knew why they were looking at her.

She had been involved before.

She had hidden Michael.

She had lied.

But was she the person behind everything?

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"You all think I destroyed your lives."

William looked at her.

"Did you?"

Claire shook her head.

"No."

She looked at Michael.

"I made mistakes."

Michael looked away.

"But I didn't create this."

Henry studied her.

"Then who did?"

Claire wiped her tears.

"The person who found me when I was desperate."

Everyone waited.

"The person who told me what to do."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Name."

Claire hesitated.

Then whispered:

"I never knew his real name."

"What?"

"He never showed his face."

Henry's expression changed.

"Never?"

Claire shook her head.

"He always communicated through letters."

Richard frowned.

"Letters?"

Claire nodded.

"And every letter had the same symbol."

Everyone looked at the watch.

The old symbol.

The same symbol that had appeared again and again.

Sophie walked closer.

"Can I see one?"

Claire looked at her.

"What?"

"The letter."

Claire hesitated.

Then reached into her bag.

Everyone froze.

Daniel noticed.

"Your bag?"

Claire looked embarrassed.

"I kept one."

She pulled out an old folded paper.

Henry immediately grabbed it.

He opened it carefully.

The symbol was there.

But underneath it was something else.

A name.

Not Henry.

Not Richard.

Not Samuel.

A different name.

Henry's face changed.

"No..."

William looked at him.

"What?"

Henry handed him the paper.

William read it.

Then his hands began to shake.

Daniel looked at the name.

And his heart dropped.

Because it was impossible.

The person behind everything...

The person who had manipulated the family...

The person who had spent decades hiding the truth...

Was someone they all knew.

Someone they had trusted.

Someone they never suspected.

The name written on the letter was:

Eleanor Hale.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Grandma Eleanor stared at the paper.

Then quietly whispered:

"No."

Her voice broke.

"I never wrote that."

Henry looked at her carefully.

"Then someone wants us to think you did."

The room became silent.

Because the mystery had just changed again.

The person they suspected...

might be the victim.

And the person who had forged the evidence...

was still somewhere in the shadows.

Then Sophie's eyes moved to the letter.

She noticed something.

Something everyone else missed.

"The handwriting."

Daniel looked at her.

"What about it?"

Sophie pointed.

"This letter and the note from before..."

She looked at Henry.

"They aren't written by the same person."

Everyone froze.

Sophie continued:

"The person who wrote this wanted us to blame Grandma."

A pause.

"But the person who wrote the other note wanted us to find the truth."

Henry stared at the two papers.

And slowly realized something terrifying.

There were not one person controlling the game.

There were two.

One trying to destroy the family.

And one trying to save it.

The question was no longer:

Who is the enemy?

The real question was:

May you like

Who has been protecting them from the enemy all this time?
