Chapter 12: The Target They Never Expected

The room became colder.
Not because of the weather.
Not because of the darkness outside.
Because everyone finally understood something terrifying.
This had never been about the watch.
The watch was only the first piece.
The purse.
The tracker.
The old company.
The hidden documents.
Every clue had been placed carefully.
Someone had been guiding them toward a truth that powerful people wanted forgotten.
And now that truth had reached Sophie.
The youngest person in the family.
The person nobody considered dangerous.
Henry looked at the photograph again.
His expression became serious.
"They know."
Daniel looked at him.
"Who are they?"
Henry placed the photo back on the table.
"The same people who spent decades making sure William never discovered his real history."
William stared.
"You still haven't told me who."
Henry looked at his brother.
"Because I wanted to be certain."
"Certain about what?"
"That the person behind this was still alive."
The room went silent.
Richard stepped closer.
"Henry."
Henry looked at him.
"You found the proof?"
Richard nodded.
"I did."
William looked between them.
"You two have been working together?"
Richard lowered his eyes.
"Not at first."
Henry nodded.
"We spent years blaming each other."
A sad smile appeared.
"That was exactly what they wanted."
Daniel understood.
"They wanted you divided."
"Yes."
Henry looked at the family.
"When people are fighting each other, they don't notice who is standing behind them."
Sophie looked at Henry.
"Like when everyone thought Grandma took the watch."
Everyone became quiet.
Henry looked surprised.
Then he smiled slightly.
"Exactly."
Sophie pointed at the purse.
"Someone wanted everyone to look at the wrong thing."
Henry nodded.
"And that is why you found the truth."
Daniel looked at his daughter.
He felt a strange mixture of pride and fear.
Pride because she had noticed what everyone ignored.
Fear because now she had become part of something dangerous.
He moved closer to her.
"Sophie, I need you to stay close to me."
She looked up.
"Because of the person in the picture?"
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
Sophie looked at Henry.
"Why would someone care about me?"
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Henry spoke.
"Because you found something they spent thirty-five years hiding."
Sophie frowned.
"But I only found Grandpa's watch."
Henry shook his head.
"No."
He pointed toward the old wooden box.
"You found the first crack in the wall."
The family looked confused.
Henry continued.
"The person behind this has always controlled information."
He picked up the old documents.
"They changed records."
He touched the photograph.
"They erased people."
He looked at the watch.
"They buried history."
Then he looked at Sophie.
"But they didn't expect anyone to simply observe."
Sophie tilted her head.
"Observe?"
Henry nodded.
"Adults often see what they expect to see."
He glanced around the room.
"They saw a missing watch and searched for a thief."
His eyes moved toward Sophie.
"You saw a sound."
Nobody spoke.
Because it was true.
Sophie hadn't solved the mystery by knowing more.
She solved it by noticing more.
Suddenly, Daniel's phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
Again.
Henry immediately reached for it.
"Don't answer."
Daniel looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because they want to know if we're scared."
The phone continued ringing.
Ring.
Ring.
Ring.
Then it stopped.
A few seconds later, a message appeared.
Daniel opened it.
His face changed.
"What?"
William asked.
Daniel turned the phone around.
The message contained a photo.
A photo taken just moments ago.
Everyone stared.
It showed the living room.
The family standing together.
The angle was from outside the house.
Someone had been watching them.
Right now.
Under the picture were five words.
"I can see you."
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Claire stepped back.
"They're here."
Henry nodded.
"Yes."
Richard looked toward the windows.
"We need to leave."
William shook his head.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
"I ran once."
His voice became stronger.
"I spent thirty-five years running from a truth someone else created."
He looked at the front door.
"Not anymore."
Henry studied his brother.
For the first time, there was respect in his eyes.
"You're finally ready."
William nodded.
"I should have been ready years ago."
Then Sophie noticed something.
She walked toward the photograph.
"The picture."
Everyone looked at her.
"What about it?"
She pointed.
"Look at the reflection."
Daniel took the phone.
In the corner of the window reflection, there was a shape.
A person.
Standing outside.
But Sophie noticed something else.
"The person is not looking at us."
Henry frowned.
"What?"
Sophie pointed again.
"They're looking behind them."
Everyone stared.
She was right.
The person outside wasn't watching the family.
They were watching someone else.
Henry moved closer.
Then his expression changed.
"Impossible."
Richard looked at him.
"What?"
Henry stared at the reflection.
"That's not the person we need to worry about."
Daniel frowned.
"Then who is it?"
Henry slowly turned toward the hallway.
Because the reflection revealed something hidden.
The person outside was looking at another figure.
Someone standing inside the house.
Someone who was already with them.
The room went silent.
Everyone looked around.
Nobody moved.
Then Sophie quietly whispered:
"Someone is here."
The family members looked at each other.
Daniel immediately stood in front of Sophie.
"Who?"
Sophie looked toward the dark hallway.
"I don't know."
A sound came from the kitchen.
A glass falling.
Everyone jumped.
Henry moved quickly.
Richard followed.
Daniel stayed with Sophie.
They entered the kitchen.
Nothing.
No person.
No movement.
Only a glass broken on the floor.
Then Henry noticed something.
A small piece of paper beneath the glass.
He picked it up.
His face changed.
"What does it say?" William asked.
Henry didn't answer.
Daniel took the paper.
Only one sentence was written.
"You are searching for the person who entered your house."
A pause.
Then:
"But you should be searching for the person who was invited."
Everyone froze.
Because the message meant one thing.
The danger wasn't someone breaking in.
The danger was someone they trusted.
Someone they welcomed.
Someone who had been standing beside them all along.
Slowly...
every person in the room looked at each other.
And for the first time that night...
Sophie wasn't the only one searching for the truth.
Everyone was wondering the same thing.
May you like
Who among them had been lying?
