Chapter 4: The Brother Who Came Back

Ethan couldn't move.

The man standing inside the hidden passage looked older than the photograph Ethan had kept locked in a drawer for eight years.

His hair was longer.

His face was thinner.

There was a scar running from his left temple to his jaw.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

Gray.

Cold.

Familiar.

Ethan's brother.

Michael.

The man Ethan had watched disappear beneath the freezing waters of Lake Candlewood eight years ago.

The man whose body had never been recovered.

The man whose death had destroyed their parents.

The man Ethan had mourned until he could barely remember what happiness felt like.

Michael stared at him.

"Ethan."

Ethan took a step backward.

"No."

Sophie pressed against his side.

"Daddy?"

Michael looked at the child.

His expression softened.

Then he looked back at Ethan.

"You have to come with me."

Ethan's voice was barely audible.

"You're dead."

Michael gave a bitter smile.

"That's what everyone was supposed to believe."

Behind them, the sound of footsteps grew louder.

Celeste grabbed Ethan's arm.

"We don't have time."

Ethan pulled away.

"You knew?"

Celeste nodded.

"For years."

"You knew my brother was alive?"

"Yes."

"And you never told me?"

"I couldn't."

Ethan's eyes burned with anger.

"You let me bury him."

Celeste looked down.

"I didn't have a choice."

Michael stepped forward.

"She did."

Celeste turned toward him.

"Don't."

Michael's expression hardened.

"Tell him what you did."

"I was trying to protect Emily."

"You were protecting yourself."

Ethan looked between them.

"Enough."

His voice echoed through the passage.

"I want answers."

Michael nodded.

"You'll get them."

"Now."

Michael looked toward the hidden entrance.

"First, we survive the next five minutes."

A gunshot exploded downstairs.

Sophie screamed.

Ethan grabbed her.

Michael opened a second door hidden behind the wall.

"Move."

They entered a narrow tunnel.

Celeste followed.

Michael slammed the door behind them.

A metallic lock clicked.

For several seconds, there was only darkness.

Then emergency lights flickered on.

The tunnel stretched beneath the mansion.

Ethan stared at his brother.

"How long has this been here?"

"Since before Dad built the house."

"Why?"

Michael didn't answer.

Ethan followed him deeper.

"Sophie," Michael said quietly, "stay close to your father."

The little girl nodded.

Ethan noticed something.

Michael wasn't afraid of the men upstairs.

He was afraid of something else.

"Who are they?"

Michael stopped.

"The people who have been cleaning up Emily's trail."

"Who?"

Michael turned around.

"The people who created the baby-switch."

Ethan's stomach tightened.

"And Emily discovered them?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't she tell me?"

"Because she didn't know who to trust."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"Not even me?"

Michael looked at him.

"Especially you."

The words hurt.

"Why?"

"Because someone had access to your life."

Michael continued walking.

"Your phone. Your bank accounts. Your home. Your medical records."

Ethan stopped.

"Who?"

Michael didn't answer.

Instead, he opened a steel door.

Inside was a small underground room.

A table.

Two chairs.

Several monitors.

And dozens of photographs covering the walls.

Ethan walked inside.

His heart pounded.

There were photographs of Emily.

Pregnant.

Leaving the hospital.

Holding newborn Sophie.

Meeting Richard.

Meeting Celeste.

But then Ethan saw something that made him stop.

A photograph of himself.

Taken while he slept.

Another showed him entering his office.

Another showed him holding Sophie at the park.

Someone had been watching them for years.

"Who took these?"

Michael closed the door.

"They did."

Ethan turned.

"Who are they?"

Michael finally answered.

"A private organization."

"Name?"

"The Meridian Group."

Ethan frowned.

"I've never heard of it."

"That's the point."

Michael placed a folder on the table.

Ethan opened it.

Inside were bank transfers.

Medical records.

Property purchases.

Names.

Hundreds of names.

Then he saw one that made his hands freeze.

His father's.

Ethan looked up.

"My father?"

Michael nodded.

"He wasn't just a businessman."

Ethan stared at him.

"What are you saying?"

"Your father helped build Meridian."

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

"Yes."

"He would never..."

Michael interrupted.

"He did."

Ethan's eyes moved across the documents.

"Why?"

"Money."

Michael pointed to a series of transactions.

"Meridian specialized in protecting wealthy families from scandals."

"Protecting?"

Michael's voice became bitter.

"Controlling scandals."

Ethan looked at the photographs again.

"Emily found out."

"She found more than that."

Michael reached into the folder.

He pulled out a DNA report.

Ethan read the first line.

His hands began to tremble.

The report compared Sophie with Ethan.

MATCH.

99.99%.

Ethan looked at Michael.

"Sophie is mine."

"I know."

"Then why did Emily say she wasn't the baby they were trying to steal?"

Michael's expression changed.

"Because she wasn't."

He pulled out another DNA report.

This one compared Sophie with another newborn.

The result was impossible.

No match.

Ethan stared.

"Who's the other baby?"

Michael slowly sat down.

"That's what Emily spent the last six years trying to discover."

"And?"

"We found her."

Ethan's heart slammed against his ribs.

"Where?"

Michael looked at Sophie.

"Closer than you think."

Before Ethan could ask another question, the lights went out.

Total darkness.

A click echoed through the room.

Michael whispered:

"Get down."

Ethan pulled Sophie to the floor.

Gunfire erupted.

Bullets tore through the steel door.

Celeste screamed.

Michael returned fire.

Then silence.

Ethan held Sophie against the floor.

"Daddy..."

"I'm here."

A voice came from the other side.

"Ethan!"

It was Richard.

"Give us the girl!"

Ethan froze.

Michael whispered:

"Don't answer."

Richard shouted again.

"We don't want you!"

A pause.

"We only want Sophie."

Ethan's grip tightened around his daughter.

Michael leaned close.

"There is another exit."

They crawled toward the back wall.

Michael opened a small hatch.

"Go."

Ethan pushed Sophie through.

Celeste followed.

Michael stayed behind.

Ethan looked back.

"Come with us."

"I'll hold them."

"Michael!"

His brother looked at him.

"There's something I never told you."

"What?"

"I didn't disappear eight years ago."

Ethan stared.

"I was taken."

"By Meridian?"

Michael nodded.

"And your wife helped me escape."

Ethan's heart stopped.

"Emily?"

"Yes."

Michael smiled faintly.

"She saved my life."

Then he shoved Ethan through the hatch.

The door slammed shut.

Ethan, Sophie, and Celeste emerged into an abandoned wine cellar beneath the neighboring property.

Ethan turned toward Celeste.

"Why did Emily save my brother?"

Celeste didn't answer.

"Tell me."

She looked at Sophie.

Then whispered:

"Because Michael was the only person who knew the truth about the night your father died."

Ethan's face went pale.

"My father?"

Celeste nodded.

"Your father didn't die naturally."

"What?"

"He was murdered."

Ethan staggered backward.

"Who killed him?"

Celeste opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, Sophie spoke.

"Mommy knew."

Ethan turned.

"What?"

Sophie was staring at an old photograph hanging on the cellar wall.

She pointed.

"That's the man Mommy was afraid of."

Ethan looked at the photograph.

It showed a charity gala from fifteen years ago.

His father stood in the center.

Beside him was a younger Celeste.

And behind them...

Richard.

But that wasn't what terrified Ethan.

Standing beside Richard was Emily.

She was barely twenty years old.

Ethan stared at the photograph.

"That's impossible."

Celeste whispered:

"It isn't."

Ethan slowly turned toward her.

"How long did Emily know Richard?"

Celeste closed her eyes.

"Before she met you."

The cellar door suddenly slammed shut.

Someone was standing on the other side.

Then a woman's voice came through.

A voice Ethan had waited six years to hear.

"Ethan..."

He froze.

Sophie whispered:

"Mommy."

Emily continued.

"Please don't let them take Sophie."

Ethan rushed toward the door.

"Emily!"

Her voice trembled.

"I have to tell you something."

"What?"

A long silence.

Then she whispered:

"Richard is not Sophie's father."

Ethan exhaled.

But then Emily added:

"And neither are you."

Ethan froze.

Sophie began crying.

Celeste covered her mouth.

Emily's voice broke.

"The DNA report was forged."

A pause.

"The real father is someone you already know."

Then the cellar lights suddenly came back on.

Ethan turned toward the photograph.

His eyes landed on one person.

His own father.

May you like

And for the first time, Ethan wondered whether the secret his wife had been hiding wasn't about Sophie at all.

It was about him.
