Chapter 15: The Truth Emily Left Behind

The garage shook violently.

Ethan hit the concrete floor hard.

For several seconds, all he could hear was ringing.

Smoke filled the air.

Metal groaned above him.

Then he heard Sophie screaming.

"Daddy!"

Ethan pushed himself up.

"I'm here!"

He looked around.

Lily was beside Michael.

Ava was crouched behind a vehicle.

The baby was still in Ethan's arms.

But Emily was gone.

So was the man who had called himself Ethan's real father.

Ethan spun around.

"Emily!"

Nothing.

He ran toward the tunnel.

Michael grabbed his shoulder.

"Wait!"

"Let go!"

"The building is collapsing."

"My wife is in there!"

"You'll die before you find her."

Ethan shoved him away.

Then a voice came from behind.

"Ethan."

He stopped.

Robert stood near the destroyed entrance.

Blood covered one side of his face.

But he was alive.

Ethan pointed his gun at him.

"You knew."

Robert looked at him.

"I knew there was another man."

"Who is he?"

Robert shook his head.

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I've never seen his face."

Ethan stared.

"But Emily did."

Robert nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why did she disappear?"

Robert looked toward Ava.

"Because she knew what was coming."

Ava suddenly spoke.

"Mommy went to the old house."

Ethan turned.

"What old house?"

"The house where we were born."

Ethan froze.

"All of us?"

Ava nodded.

"Yes."

Michael looked at Robert.

"That's impossible."

Robert whispered:

"Not anymore."

They got into the car.

Ethan drove.

The old Carter house stood at the edge of town.

The mansion had been abandoned for years.

Its windows were boarded.

The garden had become overgrown.

But tonight...

one window was illuminated.

Ethan stopped.

He stepped out.

Sophie and Lily stayed inside with Michael.

Ava followed Ethan.

"You stay here."

She shook her head.

"Mommy said I had to show you."

"Show me what?"

She pointed toward the house.

"The room under the stairs."

Ethan stared at her.

They entered.

Dust covered everything.

The air smelled old.

Like a place that had been waiting.

Ava walked straight toward the staircase.

She pushed aside a wooden panel.

A hidden door opened.

Inside was a small room.

There were photographs everywhere.

Ethan's childhood.

Emily's childhood.

Robert.

Margaret.

Adrian.

And hundreds of documents.

Ethan picked one up.

It was his birth certificate.

But the name of his father had been blacked out.

Another document revealed the truth.

BIOLOGICAL MOTHER: EMILY VALE.

BIOLOGICAL FATHER: UNKNOWN.

Ethan's heart raced.

"Unknown?"

Ava nodded.

"That's what Mommy said."

Ethan turned.

"What did she tell you?"

Ava looked at him.

"She said your father wasn't a person."

Ethan frowned.

"What?"

"He was a project."

Silence.

Ava pointed toward a photograph.

It showed Emily standing beside a laboratory machine.

Inside was a tiny embryo.

Ethan stepped closer.

Underneath the photograph was a name.

PROJECT ORIGIN.

He read the notes.

SUBJECT: E-01.

GENETIC SOURCE: MULTIPLE DONORS.

PRIMARY TEMPLATE: CARTER BLOODLINE.

Ethan's face went pale.

"This isn't my father."

Ava shook her head.

"You were created from many people."

Ethan looked at her.

"But someone had to be my biological father."

Ava pointed to another file.

Ethan opened it.

There was a DNA report.

PATERNAL CONTRIBUTION: 47%.

SOURCE: UNKNOWN.

Then a second line.

MATCH FOUND.

Ethan's hands trembled.

He read the name.

ROBERT CARTER.

He stared.

Robert was his biological father.

Again.

But then he noticed another page.

The DNA sample used to identify Robert had been collected twenty years after Ethan's birth.

Ethan's heart sank.

Someone had manipulated the results.

Ava whispered:

Ethan turned the page.

A handwritten note appeared.

THE CHILD MUST BELIEVE ROBERT IS HIS FATHER.

Ethan stopped.

"Who wrote this?"

Ava pointed toward the final page.

Emily's handwriting.

Ethan read.

I didn't know how much of the truth Ethan could survive.

I didn't know how much of the truth I could survive either.

But if you're reading this, then everything has already fallen apart.

There is one thing I need you to understand.

You were never created to be a weapon.

You were never created to save Margaret.

You were never created for Meridian.

You were created because I loved you.

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

He continued.

Your father is not the man they told you.

Your father is not Robert.

Your father is not Adrian.

Your father is not even the man who will claim to be him.

The truth is simpler.

You were born from my DNA and the DNA of a man who died before you were born.

A man named Daniel Vale.

Ethan froze.

Daniel Vale.

Not Adrian.

Daniel.

He looked at Ava.

"Who is Daniel?"

Ava pointed toward another photograph.

Ethan picked it up.

Emily stood beside a young man.

He had the same gray eyes.

But unlike Adrian...

he had Ethan's exact smile.

Ethan whispered:

"Daniel."

Ava nodded.

"He was Mommy's first love."

Ethan turned the photograph over.

There was a date.

Six months before Ethan was born.

Then a handwritten sentence.

Daniel died protecting our child.

Ethan's breathing stopped.

A second note was beneath it.

Margaret ordered his death.

Ethan clenched the photograph.

Everything finally connected.

Margaret had killed Daniel.

She had taken Ethan.

She had erased his identity.

She had used his DNA.

She had built Meridian around him.

Emily had spent years trying to protect him.

Robert had helped hide the truth.

And Adrian had taken advantage of the chaos.

But there was still one question.

Where was Emily?

A sound came from upstairs.

Ethan raised his gun.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Then Emily appeared.

Her clothes were torn.

There was blood on her forehead.

But she was alive.

Ethan ran to her.

"Emily!"

She collapsed into his arms.

He held her tightly.

"I thought I lost you."

She whispered:

"I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize."

He looked into her eyes.

"Tell me the truth."

Emily nodded.

"You found the files."

"Yes."

"You know about Daniel."

"Yes."

"You know about Meridian."

"Yes."

"Then you know why I couldn't come home."

Ethan shook his head.

"You should have trusted me."

"I was afraid."

"You don't have to be afraid anymore."

Emily looked at him.

"Not anymore."

Behind her, the stranger appeared.

The man who had claimed to be Ethan's father.

Ethan raised his gun.

The man stopped.

Emily looked at him.

"You came back."

He nodded.

Ethan stared.

"Who are you?"

The man looked at him.

"My name is Daniel Vale."

Ethan's eyes widened.

"That's impossible."

Daniel smiled sadly.

"I know."

Emily whispered:

"He didn't die."

Ethan stared at her.

"Then whose body did Margaret bury?"

Daniel answered:

"Someone who looked enough like me."

Ethan lowered his weapon slightly.

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I had no choice."

"Why?"

"Because Margaret would have killed you."

Ethan's voice cracked.

"You were my father."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"And you watched me grow up from a distance."

"Every year."

"Why didn't you come back?"

Daniel looked at Emily.

"Because we were trying to dismantle Meridian."

Ethan looked around.

"So it's over?"

Daniel smiled.

"Look outside."

Sirens filled the night.

Dozens of police vehicles surrounded the property.

The Meridian archive had been released.

Every secret.

Every payment.

Every child.

Every experiment.

Every name.

The organization could no longer hide.

Ethan looked at Sophie and Lily.

They ran toward him.

He dropped his weapon and knelt.

Both girls wrapped their arms around him.

The baby slept peacefully against his chest.

Ava stood a few feet away.

Ethan reached out.

"Come here."

She hesitated.

Then ran into his arms.

For the first time in her life, Ava had a family.

Ethan looked at Emily.

"What happens now?"

Emily smiled through tears.

"We start over."

Behind them, Margaret was arrested.

Celeste surrendered.

Richard survived his injuries and agreed to testify.

Michael gave the authorities every file he had collected.

Robert confessed everything.

And Meridian collapsed.

But one mystery remained.

Weeks later, Ethan returned to the mansion.

The nursery had been restored.

Sophie and Lily were playing.

Ava was drawing.

The baby slept beside the window.

Emily entered carrying a small wooden box.

"Ethan."

He turned.

"What's that?"

"Something your father left."

"Which one?"

She smiled.

"Daniel."

Ethan opened the box.

Inside was a photograph.

He turned it over.

There was one final handwritten message.

My son,

If you ever find this, then you finally know the truth.

I spent my life believing blood determines who we become.

I was wrong.

Family isn't created by DNA.

It's created by the people who stay.

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

He looked across the room.

Emily.

Sophie.

Lily.

Ava.

His son.

His family.

He finally understood.

For years, everyone had fought over his blood.

Everyone had wanted to own his future.

But nobody could control what he chose to do with it.

Ethan folded the letter.

Then he placed it back inside the box.

Outside, the sun was rising over Connecticut.

For the first time in six years, there were no secrets waiting behind the walls.

No hidden rooms.

No locked cases.

No voices from beneath the floor.

Only the sound of his children laughing.

Ethan looked at Emily.

"Let's leave this house."

She smiled.

"Where will we go?"

He looked at the children.

"Somewhere they can't find us."

Emily took his hand.

And together, they walked out.

Behind them, the mansion stood silent.

But beneath the old floorboards...

one final red light blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then a hidden screen came alive.

A message appeared:

MERIDIAN PROJECT: TERMINATED.

Then another line appeared.

SUBJECT E-01: LOCATION UNKNOWN.

And beneath it...

PROJECT ORIGIN: PHASE TWO READY.

The screen went black.

May you like

Because Ethan had escaped Meridian.

But someone, somewhere, had already started building the next generation.
