Chapter 15 - I stared at the document. The name on the birth certificate blurred.

I read it again.

Then again.

My hands began shaking.

Claire whispered,

“That's impossible.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who is it?”

I turned the screen toward him.

He went pale.

The father listed on Tommy's original birth record was my mother's former lawyer.

The same man who had disappeared twenty years earlier.

The same man whose organization had been hunting us.

The same man whose voice had appeared on the first recording.

He wasn't Tommy's biological father.

He was listed as his legal father.

Because the clinic had falsified the records.

The truth was different.

Tommy was mine.

The record had been changed to make it appear otherwise.

The enemy didn't want Tommy because he belonged to them.

They wanted him because they wanted me to believe he did.

The entire conspiracy was built on one thing.

Doubt.

Make me question my wife.

Make me question my father.

Make me question my brother.

Then make me question my own child.

I closed the file.

“They wanted me to destroy my own family.”

Claire began crying.

“They almost succeeded.”

We heard a voice behind us.

“You finally understand.”

My mother.

She stood in the doorway.

No gun this time.

Just tears.

Real tears.

She looked at all of us.

“I was wrong.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You're saying that now?”

“Yes.”

My mother looked at me.

“I thought controlling the truth would protect you.”

“It didn't.”

“I know.”

She stepped closer.

“I made a terrible choice.”

I stared at her.

“What choice?”

“Your father wanted to expose everyone.”

“And you stopped him.”

“I thought I could control them.”

“But you couldn't.”

“No.”

She looked at Claire.

“They threatened Lily.”

Claire lowered her head.

“They threatened all of us.”

My mother turned to me.

“The man hunting you is not who you think.”

I frowned.

“The name on the record?”

“A decoy.”

“Then who?”

She looked behind us.

At the vault.

At the documents.

Then whispered,

“Your lawyer.”

My stomach dropped.

The lawyer who had supposedly been helping me investigate the missing money.

The lawyer who had prepared the trust.

The lawyer who had first told me my father's death was an accident.

He had orchestrated everything.

Before I could speak, my phone rang.

His number.

I answered.

“Ethan.”

His voice was calm.

“You finally found it.”

“Found what?”

“The original ledger.”

I looked at the hard drive.

“You were behind all of this.”

“No.”

He laughed.

“I was cleaning up your family's mess.”

“Where's Tommy?”

“Safe.”

“Bring him back.”

“You don't understand.”

“Bring him back!”

“If you want your son alive, come alone.”

“Where?”

He gave me an address.

The cemetery where my father was supposedly buried.

I looked at my father.

He shook his head.

“It's a trap.”

“I know.”

“But you're still going.”

“Yes.”

Claire stepped forward.

“So are we.”

“No.”

She grabbed my arm.

“You're not doing this alone.”

I looked at Lily.

Then Tommy's empty hospital blanket.

I nodded.

We went.

The cemetery was empty.

Rain began falling.

My lawyer stood beside the grave.

He held Tommy.

Alive.

Awake.

His tiny hand curled around the lawyer's finger.

“Give him to me.”

The lawyer smiled.

“You know what the funny part is?”

I said nothing.

“You spent your entire life trying to become different from your father.”

He looked at the grave.

“But you became exactly like him.”

“I won't hurt you.”

“You already did.”

He looked at Tommy.

“This child is the last proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“That the network can be inherited.”

He reached into his coat.

Pulled out a syringe.

I stepped forward.

“Don't.”

He smiled.

“This isn't for Tommy.”

He held it toward me.

“It's for you.”

Claire screamed,

“ETHAN!”

I froze.

The lawyer continued,

“The blood in your veins unlocks everything.”

I stared at him.

The trust.

The vault.

The files.

The network.

All of it.

He didn't want Tommy.

He wanted me alive long enough to unlock the entire system.

Then he would erase me.

My father had spent years trying to stop it.

My mother had tried to control it.

Marcus had tried to destroy it.

Claire had tried to survive it.

And now it was my turn.

I slowly raised my hands.

“Let Tommy go.”

The lawyer smiled.

“Good.”

Then a gunshot cracked through the cemetery.

The lawyer dropped.

Tommy screamed.

I ran.

Claire caught the baby.

Marcus appeared behind us.

Police lights flooded the gates.

And from behind the gravestone...

my father stepped into the rain.

He looked at me.

Then at Tommy.

“We have one problem left.”

“What?”

He pointed toward the lawyer.

“He wasn't the one running everything.”

I looked at the fallen man.

“Then who was?”

My father turned toward the cemetery chapel.

The doors opened.

A woman stepped out.

Gray hair.

Elegant black coat.

A familiar face.

My mother.

But not the mother standing beside me.

Another woman.

Her twin.

She smiled at me.

“Hello, Ethan.”

My father whispered,

“The real queen is here.”

The woman raised a photograph.

It showed Lily.

Then Tommy.

Then me.

All three connected by a single red line.

She smiled.

“And now that you've opened the vault...”

Her eyes settled on me.

“...you've given me everything I needed.”

The chapel doors slammed shut behind her.

And for the first time that night, I realized the truth.

We hadn't been uncovering a conspiracy.

May you like

We had been following its instructions.

Straight into the final trap.
