Chapter 14 - I couldn't breathe.“My blood?”

The doctor had drawn my blood.
The same night Tommy was born.
The same clinic.
The same records.
The same lab.
Everything had been manipulated.
Claire stared at the screen.
“Why would they use Ethan's blood?”
The doctor answered.
“Because the marker is inherited.”
My father said,
“Then Tommy isn't the target.”
“No.”
The doctor shook his head.
“The target is Ethan.”
My mother's face appeared in the frame.
She smiled.
“I told you.”
I stepped closer to the monitor.
“What does she mean?”
The doctor continued.
“The genetic marker exists in your father's bloodline.”
“So?”
“Only one living descendant has the full sequence.”
Me.
I stared at Tommy.
“But why him?”
“Because your father created the trust using a biological verification system.”
The real trust could only be accessed by someone carrying the marker.
“That's impossible.”
“It isn't.”
The doctor opened another file.
A blood analysis.
My name.
Full sequence.
Complete match.
Then another.
Marcus.
Partial match.
Tommy.
Partial.
Lily.
Negative.
I looked at Claire.
“So I'm the key.”
She nodded.
My entire life had been built around protecting me without ever telling me why.
Then the lights in the house flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Every screen went black.
The monitor came alive again.
My mother appeared.
“Ethan.”
I stared at her.
“You wanted the truth.”
“Yes.”
“Now you have it.”
She leaned toward the camera.
“Come to the bank.”
“What bank?”
“The one your father thought he destroyed.”
She gave me an address.
Then the feed ended.
Marcus entered the room.
“We should call the police.”
My father shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because half the police force may be working for them.”
Marcus stared.
“How do you know?”
“Because I built the network.”
Silence.
I looked at my father.
“Then help me destroy it.”
He nodded.
“There is one way.”
“What?”
“You have to open the original vault.”
“The bank.”
“Yes.”
“What is inside?”
“Every secret.”
We drove there.
The vault was beneath an abandoned financial building in downtown.
The entry required three fingerprints.
Mine.
Marcus's.
And my father's.
The door opened.
Inside were shelves of files.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Names.
I found one folder.
PROJECT ORPHAN.
Inside was a list.
Children.
Hundreds.
All connected to wealthy families.
Some were missing.
Some were dead.
Some had disappeared without explanation.
At the bottom was Tommy's name.
Beside it:
STATUS: ACTIVE.
I felt sick.
“What is Project Orphan?”
My father looked away.
“My greatest failure.”
“You experimented on children?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“We tracked them.”
“For what?”
“To protect them.”
“From whom?”
He pointed to the files.
“From the people who owned them.”
I stared.
“What does that mean?”
He handed me a final document.
The truth was worse.
The organization had created inheritance networks around children.
They manipulated marriages.
Births.
Adoptions.
Deaths.
They controlled who inherited companies.
Who disappeared.
Who became powerful.
And my family was one of the architects.
I looked at Claire.
“She knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“And Marcus?”
“He discovered it later.”
Marcus nodded.
“I spent years trying to destroy it.”
The vault alarm suddenly activated.
Red lights flashed.
My father looked toward the door.
“They're here.”
The steel doors began closing.
We ran.
Marcus grabbed the hard drive.
Claire grabbed the files.
I grabbed Tommy's records.
My father stayed behind.
“Dad!”
He smiled.
“Finish it.”
The door slammed shut.
We heard gunfire.
I stood frozen.
Then the vault door shook.
Once.
Twice.
Then stopped.
Marcus looked at me.
“Ethan.”
“What?”
He held up the hard drive.
“There is one file left.”
“What file?”
He opened it.
A video began.
My father appeared.
Alive.
Speaking directly to the camera.
“If you found this, I failed.”
I stared.
“Your mother will tell you I did everything for money.”
He shook his head.
“It was never about money.”
He paused.
“It was about you.”
The video ended.
Then another file opened automatically.
A birth record.
Not mine.
Not Marcus's.
Tommy's.
But under “Father”...
there was another name.
A name I had never seen before.
The name of the man who had been hunting us.
May you like
And suddenly I understood why he wanted my son.
Because Tommy wasn't my son.
