Chapter 20 - The Candle That Stayed LitDawn came slowly.

Rain washed the estate gardens clean.

Police cars lined the road.

Federal agents carried boxes from the mansion.

Men who had spent decades hiding behind wealth were led away in handcuffs.

Victor confessed.

Luca testified.

Marina vanished before authorities could find her.

Snow was arrested.

Antonio was taken away.

The Moretti empire was seized piece by piece.

But Alessandro did not feel victorious.

He stood outside the ballroom.

Inside, Ethan sat at the table eating birthday cake.

He had been waiting for hours.

Lily sat beside him.

Sophia poured milk into a glass.

Daniel stood nearby.

Isabella watched from the doorway.

Gabriel leaned against the wall.

For the first time in twenty years, the brothers were in the same room without a gun pointed at either of them.

Ethan lifted his fork.

“Dad?”

Alessandro turned.

“Yes?”

“Can I finally eat the cake?”

Everyone laughed.

It was the first real laughter the house had heard all night.

Alessandro walked inside.

He looked at the cake.

Only one candle remained burning.

He blew it out.

The room applauded.

Lily smiled.

Then Alessandro noticed something.

A tiny folded paper sat beneath the plate.

He opened it.

One sentence.

THIS WAS ONLY THE FIRST CAKE.

His smile disappeared.

He looked at Lily.

She was staring at him.

She already knew.

“How long have you had that?”

Lily thought for a moment.

“Since yesterday.”

Alessandro's eyes widened.

“Who gave it to you?”

She pointed toward the window.

A black car was disappearing down the road.

Daniel moved toward the door.

“Don't.”

Alessandro stopped him.

“Why?”

Daniel looked worried.

“Because that car belonged to your mother.”

Isabella stepped forward.

“That is impossible.”

The car disappeared around the bend.

Alessandro unfolded the paper again.

There was another line beneath the first.

WHEN YOU FIND HER, ASK HER ABOUT THE SECOND CHILD.

Alessandro looked at Gabriel.

Gabriel looked at Isabella.

Isabella covered her mouth.

“No.”

Alessandro whispered:

“Second child?”

Isabella began crying.

Lily looked toward the dark window.

And said:

“Grandpa told me not to say her name.”

The room went silent.

“What name?”

Lily looked at Alessandro.

Then she whispered it.

“Grace.”

Outside, thunder rolled across the waking city.

Somewhere beyond the gates, another black car stopped at a red light.

Inside sat a woman with silver hair.

She opened an old photograph.

It showed three babies.

Not two.

Three.

And on the back was written:

THE MORETTI STORY DID NOT BEGIN WITH ALessandro.

IT BEGAN WITH GRACE.

The woman smiled.

Then she made a phone call.

“Tell them,” she whispered.

“They finally found the first heir.”

A pause.

“No.”

Her smile widened.

May you like

“Tell them the second one is coming home.”

And in the Moretti estate, while everyone thought the nightmare had ended, the last candle on the birthday table suddenly flickered back to life.
