Chapter 17 - Back to the BallroomAlessandro returned to the grand hall.

The cake still stood on the table.

Candles burning.

Perfect.

Untouched.

Lily sat in a chair beside it.

A man stood behind her.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

Elegant.

No mask.

Alessandro stopped.

“Let her go.”

The man smiled.

“Of course.”

He was Mr. Snow.

For years, he had been a rumor inside the Moretti family.

A broker.

A fixer.

A ghost.

He had never belonged to one country.

Or one empire.

He belonged to whoever paid.

He looked at Alessandro.

“You finally understand.”

“Understand what?”

“The cake was never the weapon.”

Alessandro looked at Lily.

“She was.”

“No.”

Mr. Snow smiled.

“She is the evidence.”

He revealed the truth.

Years ago, Isabella had hidden the final ledger inside a children's memory game.

She taught Emilia a series of images and sounds.

The child had memorized them.

The bomb threat was designed to force the family into revealing which people recognized certain details.

A test.

Every reaction had been recorded.

Every lie.

Every panic response.

Every glance.

The cake had been a stage.

The birthday had been an interrogation disguised as a celebration.

Alessandro looked at the candles.

“Who built all this?”

Mr. Snow smiled.

“Your father.”

“Antonio is dead.”

“Yes.”

“Then who gave you the orders?”

Mr. Snow looked toward the ballroom entrance.

A man walked in.

Luca.

He was holding a gun.

Alessandro's eyes hardened.

“You.”

Luca nodded.

“I am sorry.”

“You betrayed us.”

“No.”

Luca looked at Lily.

“I protected her.”

He revealed the final secret.

Daniel Romano was not dead.

He had lived for twenty years under another identity.

And he had been the one moving against the family from the shadows.

Lily's father.

Alessandro stared.

“Where is he?”

Luca smiled sadly.

“He is standing behind you.”

Alessandro turned.

A man stepped from the darkness.

Older.

Scarred.

But alive.

Sophia covered her mouth.

“Daniel.”

Lily jumped from the chair.

“Daddy!”

The man caught her.

And for the first time that night, Alessandro saw the real reason everyone had been fighting.

Not money.

Not power.

A father trying to keep his daughter alive.

Then Daniel looked at the cake.

His face changed.

“Oh no.”

Alessandro followed his gaze.

The candles had relit themselves.

May you like

And one final message appeared beneath them.

THREE MINUTES.
