Chapter 2: The Truth Buried for Five Years

Chapter 1: The Girl from the Shadows

The little girl stepped cautiously out of the dim hallway, clutching the sleeve of an oversized sweater that nearly swallowed her tiny frame.

Thomas stopped breathing.

She looked no older than eleven.

Dark brown hair rested against her shoulders, slightly tangled from neglect. Her face was thinner than the daughter he remembered, but her eyes...

Those eyes.

The same deep hazel eyes Isabella had once teased him about.

"Sofía?" Thomas whispered.

The girl stiffened.

Eli immediately moved in front of her.

"Don't hurt her," he said fiercely.

Thomas dropped to his knees on the cracked sidewalk.

"I would never hurt her."

The girl stared at him.

Fear battled confusion in her expression.

"My name isn't Sofía," she said quietly. "It's Anna."

Thomas felt the words strike like cold water.

He opened his trembling wallet and pulled out a worn photograph that had been folded and unfolded thousands of times over the years.

It showed a little girl wearing a yellow dress and a golden star pendant.

Sofía.

The girl from the hallway slowly reached for the picture.

Her fingers shook.

"I know this dress," she whispered.

A sudden pain crossed her face.

"I... I think I've seen this before."

Fragments surfaced behind her eyes.

Music.

Balloons.

Someone laughing.

A woman calling her name.

Then darkness.

The girl dropped the photograph.

"I don't remember," she cried.

Thomas fought back tears.

"You don't have to remember everything today," he said softly.

"But please... let me help you."

For the first time, the girl looked directly at him.

And in the silence between them, something familiar lingered.

Something neither of them could explain.
