Chapter 2: The Secret Left by a Father

Chapter 1: The Boy Who Heard Engines Speak

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The black supercar purred like a wild beast that had finally awakened from a long sleep. The same mechanics who had mocked the dirty boy now stared at him as if he had performed magic.

The millionaire owner, Victor Langston, slowly turned toward the child.

"How did you do that?"

The boy picked up an old rag and cleaned the grease from his fingers.

"The fuel pressure sensor wasn't broken," he replied quietly. "The wiring harness behind the intake manifold had melted against the engine block. Everyone kept replacing parts, but nobody looked for the real problem."

Silence spread through the garage.

Victor blinked. "You figured that out... by looking at it?"

The boy nodded.

"My dad taught me."

"What shop does your father own?"

The boy's eyes lowered.

"He doesn't own one anymore."

The answer carried a weight far heavier than his small voice.

The mechanics exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Victor noticed the oversized clothes, the worn-out shoes held together by tape, and the bruises of hardship hidden beneath the dirt.

"What is your name?" Victor asked.

"Eli."

"How old are you?"

"Twelve."

Victor stared at the boy who had solved in minutes what professionals had failed to diagnose all day.

For the first time, anger gave way to curiosity.

"Come with me," he said.

Eli hesitated.

"I still have school tomorrow."

Victor almost smiled.

"So do I, apparently."
