Chapter 14: Protocol Black

Chapter 14: Protocol Black
The words on Alex Rivera's monitor seemed to drain the air from the surveillance van.
PROTOCOL BLACK BEGINS AT SUNRISE
Below the title...
Forty-three names.
Forty-three children.
Forty-three potential heirs.
And beside each name...
A single code.
R-0
Jonathan Reed stared at the screen.
For the first time in decades...
He looked terrified.
Mitchell noticed immediately.
"What does R-0 mean?"
Jonathan answered without taking his eyes off the monitor.
"It means..."
"...there will be no more heirs."
The Archive
Inside Ashcroft Manor, the Board chairman slowly closed the leather folder.
"Destroy every biological record."
"Every DNA sample."
"Every birth certificate."
"If no heir exists..."
"...the Trust survives."
Another Board member hesitated.
"What about the children?"
The chairman didn't blink.
"History remembers paper."
"Not people."
Michael Reeves had been right.
The Board had reached the final stage.
Not custody.
Not manipulation.
Erasure.
The Countdown
Back at FBI Headquarters, Rebecca Collins gathered everyone.
Alex projected a digital countdown on the wall.
5 HOURS 42 MINUTES UNTIL SUNRISE
Collins spoke calmly.
"If Protocol Black starts..."
"...we lose every child."
Jonathan nodded.
"They'll disappear forever."
Daniel looked around the room.
"So we stop them."
Mitchell answered quietly.
"There are eleven Board members."
"They own judges."
"They own politicians."
"They own private security."
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't care."
"They've spent two years hunting my daughter."
"Tonight..."
"We hunt them."
Harold's Last Recording
Just before midnight, the hospital called.
Harold Voss had survived surgery.
Barely.
But before losing consciousness again...
He had asked the nurses to deliver one final video message.
Mitchell pressed Play.
Harold appeared weak.
His breathing shallow.
"I don't have much time."
"If you're watching this..."
"...you've already learned about Protocol Black."
He coughed.
Then looked directly into the camera.
"You've all been asking the wrong question."
"The Board isn't the enemy."
Everyone frowned.
Harold continued.
"The Board votes."
"But someone decides what they vote on."
Silence.
"There has always been..."
"...a Thirteenth Chair."
Jonathan's face went pale.
"No..."
Mitchell looked toward him.
"You knew?"
Jonathan whispered,
"I thought it was a myth."
Harold nodded.
"So did I."
"Until I met him."
"Him?"
Harold slowly answered.
"The Founder."
The Hidden Chamber
Alex immediately searched every blueprint again.
Nothing.
Jonathan suddenly remembered something.
"The chapel."
"What about it?"
"The old chapel never matched the exterior dimensions."
Within minutes...
Ground-penetrating radar scanned beneath Ashcroft Manor's private chapel.
A hollow space appeared.
Thirty feet underground.
Perfectly circular.
No documented entrance.
Jonathan whispered,
"The Thirteenth Chair..."
Emily's Choice
While the adults planned...
Emily quietly sat on the floor drawing.
She looked unusually serious.
Daniel knelt beside her.
"What are you making?"
She held up the picture.
Not the mansion.
Not the Board.
A garden.
Filled with white roses.
In the middle stood Sarah.
Holding Anna's hand.
Holding Emily's hand.
Daniel felt tears fill his eyes.
"Do you miss Mommy?"
Emily nodded.
"Every day."
Then she pointed to the drawing.
"Mommy says flowers grow where people are brave."
Daniel smiled sadly.
"Did she?"
Emily thought for a moment.
"No..."
"I think I dreamed it."
Jonathan looked at the drawing.
His expression softened.
"No."
He whispered almost to himself.
"Sarah really did say that."
Breaking Into the Manor
Michael Reeves laid the blueprints across the table.
"There are too many guards at the front."
"So we don't use the front."
He pointed toward an abandoned drainage canal.
"This tunnel connects beneath the old chapel."
Jonathan frowned.
"I never knew about it."
Michael nodded.
"Nobody did."
"I built it."
The room fell silent.
"You?"
"I built it twenty years ago."
"In case..."
He stopped.
"In case Anna ever needed a way out."
The Assault Team
The FBI refused to authorize a military raid.
There wasn't enough legal justification.
Too much political risk.
Too many powerful people involved.
Collins looked around the room.
"The Bureau cannot officially participate."
Daniel understood immediately.
"So we're on our own."
Collins slowly removed her FBI badge.
She placed it on the table.
Mitchell followed.
Then Alex.
One by one...
Several agents quietly laid down their badges.
Collins smiled faintly.
"For the next few hours..."
"...we're just parents."
Michael looked at them.
"You'll lose your careers."
Mitchell answered,
"If we fail..."
"Careers won't matter."
Inside the Manor
Anna sat beside the window.
She heard footsteps.
Not guards.
Different.
Lighter.
The door opened.
An elderly housekeeper entered carrying dinner.
She quietly slipped a folded napkin beside Anna's plate.
Without saying a word, she left.
Anna unfolded it.
Only three words.
Hold on longer.
Beneath the message...
A tiny white rose had been drawn.
Anna smiled for the first time in years.
Jonathan was alive.
Sunrise Approaches
The convoy left the safe house at 4:18 a.m.
No flashing lights.
No official escort.
Only three unmarked SUVs.
Inside the lead vehicle...
Daniel looked back.
Emily had fallen asleep against his shoulder.
Still hugging the worn stuffed rabbit.
Jonathan watched the road ahead.
Michael silently checked his watch.
Mitchell loaded fresh magazines into her sidearm.
No one spoke.
The eastern horizon had just begun to turn pale.
Alex's countdown continued on the dashboard tablet.
42 MINUTES UNTIL SUNRISE
As Ashcroft Manor emerged through the morning mist...
Every radio inside the convoy suddenly crackled.
A calm, elderly voice filled the speakers.
No static.
No introduction.
Just one sentence.
"I've been expecting you, Daniel."
The voice paused.
Then continued.
"Please... come meet the Thirteenth Chair."
The transmission ended.
Ahead...
The massive iron gates of Ashcroft Manor began to open...
May you like
By themselves.
