Chapter 11: Ashcroft Manor

Chapter 11: Ashcroft Manor

The drawing slipped from Emily's tiny hands and landed on the kitchen table.

Every adult in the room gathered around it.

Twelve shadowy figures.

A towering mansion.

A little girl trapped in the highest window.

Special Agent Rebecca Collins studied it for nearly a minute.

"Emily..."

She knelt beside her.

"Have you ever been here?"

Emily nodded.

"With Grandma."

"Which grandma?"

"The one with the bird."

Evelyn.

The room fell silent.

Emily pointed to the top window.

"Mommy cried there."

The Truth Evelyn Could No Longer Hide

Mitchell immediately brought Evelyn into the conference room.

She placed Emily's drawing in front of her.

For the first time since surrendering herself...

Evelyn Ashcroft looked genuinely shaken.

"She remembers..."

Mitchell leaned forward.

"Tell us."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Ashcroft Manor wasn't simply a family estate."

"It was where every future heir was raised."

"No schools."

"No neighbors."

"No friends."

"Only tutors."

"Lawyers."

"Security."

"And the Board."

Daniel stared at her.

"Sarah grew up there?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Until she escaped."

"You let her?"

"I tried to stop her."

"You called people to bring her back."

"I believed she belonged there."

She swallowed hard.

"It took me too many years to understand that no child belongs inside a prison."

Jonathan Reed Arrives

At exactly 8:15 a.m.

A white pickup truck rolled toward the FBI safe house.

Old.

Rust around the wheel wells.

Covered in mud.

Nothing about it suggested one of the most mysterious men in America.

The driver stepped out.

Late sixties.

Gray beard.

Worn denim jacket.

Gardening gloves.

He carried a shovel over one shoulder.

The guards immediately aimed their rifles.

"Hands where we can see them."

The old man smiled.

"I was told Americans had become friendlier."

Mitchell stepped outside.

"Jonathan Reed?"

He nodded.

"I planted roses."

"And occasionally revolutions."

Collins searched him thoroughly.

No weapons.

No phone.

No wallet.

Only a packet of white rose seeds.

Sarah's Last Visit

Inside the safe house...

Jonathan looked at Sarah's photograph for a long time.

"I miss her."

Daniel asked quietly,

"When did you see her last?"

Jonathan reached into his jacket.

He removed a small silver music box.

"I gave her this."

Daniel recognized it instantly.

It had once sat on Sarah's bedside table.

He had always assumed she'd bought it at an antique store.

Jonathan wound the key.

A gentle lullaby filled the room.

Emily suddenly looked up.

"I know that song."

Everyone turned.

She softly began humming along.

Jonathan smiled sadly.

"Sarah used to sing it every night."

Daniel whispered,

"She never told me where she learned it."

Jonathan answered,

"Because singing it was forbidden."

The Secret Passage

Jonathan spread a faded blueprint across the table.

Ashcroft Manor.

Unlike the public architectural plans...

These included areas marked only with Roman numerals.

Underground tunnels.

Hidden elevators.

Escape routes.

Mitchell frowned.

"Where did you get these?"

Jonathan smiled.

"I helped build them."

Everyone stared.

"You what?"

"I wasn't always a gardener."

"I was an architect."

Thirty-five years earlier...

Jonathan had designed Ashcroft Manor's expansion.

At Charles Ashcroft's request.

Secret corridors.

Hidden archives.

Emergency exits.

He quietly added one feature Charles never approved.

A concealed tunnel leading beyond the estate grounds.

The tunnel Sarah had used to escape.

The Board Meets

Nearly one hundred miles away...

Inside Ashcroft Manor...

Twelve people gathered around an enormous oak table.

Only eleven chairs were occupied.

Evelyn's remained empty.

An elderly man struck the table once with a silver gavel.

"The succession hearing begins."

Another member looked toward the empty seat.

"Evelyn has betrayed the Trust."

The chairman nodded.

"Then we proceed without her."

A younger woman opened a leather folder.

"Status of the heir?"

A security director stood.

"Alive."

"Protected by federal authorities."

Another silence.

Then the chairman spoke calmly.

"Recommendation?"

The security director answered without hesitation.

"Remove the father."

"Recover the child."

A vote was taken.

Twelve hands.

Eleven present.

Eleven in favor.

Motion carried unanimously.

The Mole

Back at FBI Headquarters...

Alex Rivera made a disturbing discovery.

Someone inside the Bureau had accessed the classified location of the safe house.

The request had originated from an internal terminal.

User credentials...

Perfectly valid.

Mitchell frowned.

"Whose account?"

Alex hesitated.

Then slowly turned the monitor.

The username belonged to someone no one expected.

Special Agent Rebecca Collins.

Collins immediately stood.

"I didn't access anything."

Alex nodded.

"I know."

"The login happened while you were standing beside me."

Jonathan quietly spoke from across the room.

"They've done this before."

Mitchell looked toward him.

"What do you mean?"

Jonathan sighed.

"The Board never infiltrates organizations."

"They recruit people before those organizations even exist."

Emily Opens the Music Box

That evening...

Emily continued playing with Jonathan's music box.

As the melody ended...

She accidentally pressed the bottom panel.

A hidden compartment clicked open.

Inside lay something no bigger than a postage stamp.

A microfilm cartridge.

Jonathan frowned.

"I didn't know..."

Daniel looked at him.

"You never opened it?"

Jonathan slowly shook his head.

"Sarah asked me never to."

Alex immediately rushed it to the forensic lab.

Within an hour...

The images had been developed.

Blueprints.

Bank accounts.

Names.

Dozens of handwritten signatures.

At the very end...

One final page.

A birth certificate.

Mother:

Sarah Ashcroft.

Father:

Left blank.

Beneath the document...

Sarah had written one sentence in blue ink.

If Emily is reading this someday, tell her I chose love over inheritance every single time.

Daniel could no longer hold back his tears.

Emily climbed into his lap without saying a word.

She wrapped her tiny arms around his neck.

"I'm here, Daddy."

He hugged her tighter than ever before.

"I know, sweetheart."

"I know."

The Convoy

Just after midnight...

Satellite surveillance detected six black SUVs leaving Ashcroft Manor.

No license plates.

Military formation.

Traveling toward the city.

Estimated arrival:

Four hours.

Jonathan stared at the live map.

Then quietly said,

"They're not coming to negotiate."

Mitchell asked,

"How many people?"

Jonathan looked at the convoy's spacing.

His expression darkened.

"If Michael Reeves is leading them..."

He paused.

"...then nobody inside those vehicles expects to come home alive."

Outside...

Thunder rolled across the night sky.

Inside the safe house...

Every agent loaded fresh magazines.

Every exit was barricaded.

Every light was switched off.

The battle for Emily Carter...

Was no longer a legal fight.

May you like

It had become a race to survive until sunrise.
