Chapter 2: The Man Who Carried the Secret

Arthur's confession shattered the fragile silence.

Twenty years earlier, after the fatal accident, panic had spread through the Ashford family. Amid the chaos, a family employee named Victor Hale had disappeared.

"He owed dangerous people money," Arthur revealed. "He believed kidnapping Lily would earn him a fortune."

But Victor never received the ransom.

Fearing capture, he abandoned the child with Grace Carter, a widowed nurse living in another city.

Grace had searched for Lily's family for years.

Then Victor threatened her.

"If you tell anyone," he had warned, "the girl dies."

Terrified, Grace raised Lily as her own daughter and protected her the only way she knew how.

Amelia collapsed into tears.

"My mother wasn't a kidnapper," she cried. "She loved me."

Eleanor knelt beside her despite the expensive gown pooling around the marble floor.

"No one who sacrifices everything to protect a child is a monster," she said.

Grace had died three years earlier from illness, taking much of the truth to her grave.

But Arthur knew where Victor Hale could be found.

Three days later, the Ashford family confronted the aging man in a modest apartment on the outskirts of the city.

Victor finally broke.

"I never meant for it to go this far," he sobbed. "I was desperate."

Richard's fists tightened.

"You stole twenty years from my daughter."

Victor lowered his head.

"There isn't a punishment severe enough for that."

Justice eventually caught up with him.

Yet Amelia discovered that revenge brought no peace.

Because the real challenge had only begun.

How could she belong to two families at once?
