Chapter 14: The Final Secret of Michael Carter

Chapter 14: The Final Secret of Michael Carter
The rain fell heavily against the hospital windows.
Nathan stood in the hallway, staring at the recording device in his hand.
A small object.
Almost meaningless.
Yet it carried the weight of his entire life.
Michael Carter.
His father.
The man who raised him.
The man who taught him everything.
The man whose voice he trusted more than anyone.
And now…
That voice had become another mystery.
Nathan replayed the recording again.
“He was never supposed to know.”
Those words.
Only those words.
No explanation.
No context.
Just a sentence that could destroy everything.
Ethan stood beside him.
“Nathan.”
No response.
“Nathan, we need to think.”
Nathan finally looked at him.
“Think about what?”
“About the fact that Alexander may be manipulating us.”
Nathan nodded.
“I know.”
“Daniel may be manipulating us.”
“I know.”
“Eleanor may be manipulating us.”
Nathan looked away.
“I know.”
Ethan became quiet.
Because the worst part was…
They were all capable of lying.
Every person involved had hidden something.
Every person had a reason.
Every person had a story.
Nathan had spent his entire life searching for the truth.
Now the truth was everywhere.
And somehow…
That made it harder to find.
Then Daniel spoke from the hospital room.
“There’s one thing you need to know.”
Nathan turned.
“What?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Michael wasn’t protecting himself.”
Nathan frowned.
“Then who?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Someone else.”
The three men became silent.
Nathan walked back into the room.
“Explain.”
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Alexander told me Michael betrayed Thomas.”
A pause.
“But he never told me why.”
Nathan stared.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked at the recording device.
“Alexander only showed people the parts that benefited him.”
Ethan nodded slowly.
“He controls information.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at Nathan.
“And that’s exactly what happened with Michael.”
Nathan waited.
“Michael did something terrible.”
Daniel paused.
“But he may have done it for a reason.”
Nathan’s expression hardened.
“Everyone has a reason.”
He looked around.
“And everyone uses it as an excuse.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Nathan was right.
A reason did not erase consequences.
But it could explain them.
Then Ethan’s phone rang.
He answered.
A few seconds later, his face changed.
“What happened?”
Ethan looked at Nathan.
“It’s Richard.”
Nathan immediately understood.
“Where is he?”
“At the old Carter estate.”
Nathan frowned.
“Why?”
Ethan hesitated.
“He found something.”
An hour later, Nathan returned to the abandoned Carter estate.
The same place where Eleanor had revealed the truth about Isabella.
The same place where his life had become impossible to recognize.
Richard was waiting inside.
But this time…
He looked different.
Not afraid.
Determined.
“I found this hidden behind the old wall.”
He placed a small wooden box on the table.
Nathan stared.
“What is it?”
“Something Michael left.”
Nathan opened it.
Inside were several photographs.
Letters.
And one final document.
Nathan picked up the first photograph.
His heart stopped.
It showed Michael.
Thomas.
Isabella.
And…
A baby.
Him.
But something was strange.
The photograph was not from after his birth.
It was from before.
Before he was supposed to exist in Michael’s life.
Nathan looked confused.
“How?”
Richard answered quietly.
“Because Michael knew Thomas and Isabella before you were born.”
Nathan looked at him.
“Yes, I know that.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed at the photograph.
“Look closer.”
Nathan examined it.
Then he noticed something written on the back.
A date.
A date before Thomas’s death.
And a sentence:
“The three of us will protect him.”
Nathan looked up.
“The three of us?”
Richard nodded.
“Michael, Thomas, and Isabella.”
Nathan frowned.
“Why would Michael protect me before I was even born?”
Nobody answered.
Then Richard handed him another letter.
“This explains everything.”
Nathan opened it.
The handwriting was Michael’s.
Thomas,
I know you hate me now.
You have every right.
But you need to understand one thing.
I did not betray you.
Nathan stopped.
His heart raced.
He continued.
I made the world believe I betrayed you because it was the only way to save Nathan.
Nathan looked up.
“What?”
Ethan leaned closer.
“What does it say?”
Nathan kept reading.
Alexander was not the greatest danger.
Eleanor was not the greatest danger.
The person hunting Nathan was someone none of us suspected.
Someone who could reach us all.
Someone who had no reason to be questioned.
Nathan’s hands tightened.
Another hidden enemy.
Another secret.
The letter continued.
I took Nathan away from Thomas’s name because Thomas’s name had become a target.
I became his father because I wanted him to live.
I accepted being hated because his survival mattered more than my reputation.
Nathan stopped reading.
His eyes filled with emotion.
Michael.
He had not abandoned him.
He had sacrificed his truth.
But then the final paragraph appeared.
If Nathan discovers this letter, it means the person I feared has returned.
Tell him the final truth.
The person responsible for everything was not Alexander.
Not Eleanor.
Not even me.
It was the person closest to Nathan.
The room became silent.
Nathan slowly lowered the letter.
“Closest to me?”
Richard nodded.
Everyone looked at each other.
Who?
Ethan.
Vanessa.
Evelyn.
Daniel.
Richard.
Everyone had been close.
Everyone had secrets.
Then Nathan’s phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
But this time…
The message contained a photograph.
Nathan opened it.
And his blood froze.
The photograph showed him.
Taken that morning.
From outside the hospital.
Someone had been watching him.
Below the photo was a sentence:
“You are finally asking the right questions.”
Another message appeared.
“But you still haven’t asked about Ethan.”
Nathan slowly looked up.
Across the room, Ethan stood frozen.
Because he had received the same message.
The final enemy was not outside the family.
Not hidden in the past.
It was someone standing beside them.
And now…
May you like
For the first time…
Nathan wondered if his own brother had been part of the secret all along.
