Chapter 2: The Man Behind Vanessa’s Secret Nathan couldn’t hear anything. Not the whispers around him. Not the shocked voices of his parents. Not even Vanessa desperately calling his name. Everything became distant. Like he was trapped underwater, watching his entire life fall apart from far away. “The baby wasn’t yours.” Ethan’s words repeated inside his mind. Again. And again. Nathan looked at Vanessa. The woman who had held his hand when they found out about the “pregnancy.” The woman who cried against his chest and told him she was scared. The woman who made him promise that he would protect their child. Every memory suddenly felt different. Every smile. Every tear. Every moment. Was it all fake? “Say something.” Nathan’s voice was almost a whisper. Vanessa looked at him. For the first time, she had no perfect answer. No emotional speech. No carefully prepared excuse. Only silence. And Nathan hated that silence more than anything. “Vanessa.” His voice became stronger. “Tell me Ethan is lying.” Everyone waited. Because even Ethan knew that Nathan needed to hear it from her. Vanessa’s lips trembled. “Nathan…” “Tell me.” She looked away. That was enough. Nathan closed his eyes. A painful realization slowly entered his heart. He didn’t need proof anymore. The woman he loved couldn’t even deny it. “You never loved me.” Vanessa immediately reacted. “That’s not true!” Her voice became desperate. “I loved you.” Nathan laughed. But there was no happiness in it. “You loved what I could give you.” The accusation cut deeper than any scream. Vanessa stepped forward. “No. You don’t understand.” “Then explain.” Nathan looked at her. “Explain why you wore a fake pregnancy device every day.” Vanessa froze. Nobody moved. Because there was no explanation that could make it acceptable. Ethan watched her carefully. He had been waiting for this moment. The moment Vanessa finally realized she had lost control. But then something unexpected happened. Vanessa stopped crying. Her expression changed. The fear disappeared. A cold calm replaced it. “You want the truth?” Nathan stared at her. “Yes.” She took a deep breath. “Fine.” Everyone became tense. “Your family never accepted me.” Nathan frowned. “What?” Vanessa looked around the room. “You all smiled at me.” She pointed toward Nathan’s mother. “But I knew what you thought.” Nathan’s mother looked offended. “That’s not true.” Vanessa laughed softly. “Really?” She shook her head. “You thought I was just a woman who married into money.” Nobody answered. Because there had been moments of doubt. Small moments. Quiet judgments. And Vanessa had noticed every single one. “I spent years trying to prove I belonged here.” She looked at Nathan. “And then I realized something.” “What?” Vanessa stepped closer. “The easiest way to become untouchable…” She placed a hand over her stomach. “…was to become the mother of your child.” Nathan stared at her. “You destroyed everything because you wanted status?” Vanessa’s eyes hardened. “I wanted security.” “No.” Ethan interrupted. “You wanted control.” Vanessa looked at him. “You always hated me.” Ethan smiled slightly. “No.” He pointed at the notebook. “I hated what you were doing to my brother.” Nathan looked at Ethan. “You knew?” Ethan nodded. “For almost two months.” Nathan’s face changed. “Two months?” “Yes.” “Why didn’t you tell me?” That question carried pain. Not anger. Pain. Ethan looked down. “Because I needed proof.” Nathan shook his head. “You could have warned me.” “And then what?” Ethan looked at him seriously. “She would have cried.” Silence. “She would have said I misunderstood.” Another pause. “She would have turned everyone against me.” Nathan said nothing. Because he knew Ethan was right. Vanessa had always been good at making herself the victim. “But I didn’t expect this.” Ethan opened the notebook again. “I didn’t expect she had someone helping her.” Nathan looked at him. “Who?” Ethan hesitated. That hesitation made everyone nervous. “Ethan.” Finally, Ethan looked at Vanessa. “Tell him.” Vanessa’s face turned pale. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Ethan walked toward the dining table. He placed another photograph down. A photograph of Vanessa entering a hotel. Nathan looked at it. His eyes narrowed. “When was this?” Ethan answered. “Three months ago.” Nathan looked at Vanessa. “Three months ago?” Vanessa didn’t respond. Ethan placed another photo beside it. A man leaving the same hotel. Nathan’s breathing stopped. Because he recognized him. “No…” The room became silent. The man in the picture was someone Nathan knew. Someone close. Someone who had comforted him during Vanessa’s “pregnancy.” Someone who had stood beside him and congratulated him. Nathan slowly picked up the photo. His hand shook. “Why?” Nobody answered. Then Ethan spoke. “Because he was the reason Vanessa created this entire lie.” Nathan looked up. “Who is he?” Ethan’s eyes were filled with disappointment. “You already know.” Nathan stared at the picture. The face. The familiar face. The person he had trusted. The person he had invited into his home. The person who had celebrated the fake pregnancy. Finally… Nathan whispered the name. “Daniel.” The room erupted. Nathan’s father stood. “Daniel?” Vanessa immediately stepped forward. “Nathan, listen to me.” But Nathan moved away. His expression was empty. Because the pain was no longer about betrayal. It was about realizing how many people had been part of the lie. Daniel wasn’t just a stranger. He was Nathan’s closest friend since college. The man who knew every weakness Nathan had. Every fear. Every dream. And now… The man who had helped steal everything from him. Ethan continued. “I followed Vanessa because I noticed something strange.” Nathan looked at him. “What?” “She never talked about the baby when she was alone.” A confused silence filled the room. “What do you mean?” Ethan explained. “Whenever you were around, she acted like a loving mother.” He looked at Vanessa. “But whenever Daniel appeared…” He paused. “She acted like someone following instructions.” Nathan felt sick. “No…” Ethan handed him another document. “This is the final piece.” Nathan opened it. Inside were messages. Hundreds of messages. Between Vanessa and Daniel. His eyes moved across the screen. And every word destroyed another piece of his heart. “Once Nathan signs the new company agreement, everything will belong to us.” Nathan stopped breathing. Company agreement. Everything. This wasn’t about love. This wasn’t about a child. This was a plan. A calculated plan. Vanessa wasn’t trying to create a family. She was trying to steal his future. Nathan slowly looked at her. “You were going to take my company?” Vanessa’s face changed. For the first time… She looked truly exposed. “Nathan…” He stepped back. “Answer me.” She remained silent. And that silence confirmed everything. But Ethan noticed something else. Something hidden inside the messages. A detail even Vanessa didn’t realize he had found. Because Daniel and Vanessa’s plan had one weakness. They thought the baby was their strongest weapon. But they had made one mistake. They left evidence. And the evidence revealed something even more shocking. The baby Vanessa was pretending to carry… Was not Daniel’s either. And the person who knew the real identity of the child… Was about to walk through the front door. / Chapter 12 / 14

Chapter 13: The Father Behind the Mask

Chapter 13: The Father Behind the Mask

Nathan sat inside his car for almost ten minutes.

The engine was off.

The world outside continued moving.

People walked past.

Cars drove by.

The city continued like nothing had happened.

But Nathan felt frozen.

Because one sentence had destroyed another piece of his reality.

Michael Carter controlled everything.

The man who raised him.

The man who taught him to ride a bicycle.

The man who sat beside his hospital bed when he was sick.

The man who told him:

"A family protects each other."

Was he the person behind all of this?

Nathan looked at the old photograph Eleanor had given him.

Thomas.

Michael.

Isabella.

Three people who knew the truth.

Three people who promised to protect him.

And somehow…

Everything ended in betrayal.

His phone rang again.

Ethan.

Nathan answered.

“What did Daniel say?”

There was silence on the other end.

Then Ethan replied:

“He’s awake.”

“And?”

“He wants to speak with you.”

Nathan gripped the steering wheel.

“Where?”

“The hospital.”

Nathan ended the call.

For the first time in hours, he felt something clear.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

A need for answers.

Thirty minutes later, Nathan arrived at the hospital.

Ethan was waiting outside Daniel’s room.

The moment Nathan saw him, he noticed something.

Ethan looked exhausted.

Like he had not slept.

Like he had been fighting a battle inside his own head.

“What happened?”

Ethan looked at him.

“Daniel is different.”

Nathan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“He’s not defending himself.”

A pause.

“He knows what he did.”

Nathan opened the door.

Inside, Daniel was lying on the bed.

His face was bruised.

His confidence was gone.

The man who once smiled while betraying his closest friend now looked broken.

When Daniel saw Nathan, he looked away.

“Nathan.”

The voice sounded weak.

Nathan stood near the bed.

“Tell me.”

Daniel swallowed.

“I deserve your anger.”

Nathan’s expression remained cold.

“You deserve more than that.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

“Then start talking.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I never wanted this.”

Nathan laughed quietly.

“Not wanting something and doing it anyway are different things.”

Daniel accepted the words.

“You’re right.”

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Alexander found me five years ago.”

Nathan frowned.

“Five years?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew I hated being second.”

Nathan stared.

Daniel continued.

“You were always the one everyone respected.”

A bitter smile appeared.

“The perfect son.”

Nathan said nothing.

“I was jealous.”

Daniel looked down.

“And Alexander used that.”

Ethan crossed his arms.

“How?”

“He promised me power.”

Daniel looked at Nathan.

“He told me if I helped him remove you, I would become the new face of the company.”

Nathan shook his head.

“You were my friend.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Daniel looked away.

“Because I was weak.”

That answer was honest.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Nathan stepped closer.

“Did Vanessa know the entire plan?”

Daniel nodded.

“She knew part of it.”

“What part?”

“The pregnancy.”

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“She knew it was fake?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did she do it?”

Daniel answered:

“Because Alexander convinced her that you were a monster.”

Nathan frowned.

“A monster?”

Daniel nodded.

“He told her your family destroyed hers.”

Nathan looked confused.

“Her family?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Vanessa’s father…”

He stopped.

Nathan waited.

“Her father was involved with Thomas Reed.”

Nathan froze.

Again.

Another connection.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel answered:

“He was the man who betrayed Thomas.”

Silence.

Nathan looked at Ethan.

Another missing piece.

Daniel continued.

“Vanessa believed you were responsible.”

Nathan shook his head.

“But I wasn’t.”

“I know.”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“But she didn’t.”

Nathan felt exhausted.

Everyone had been carrying a version of the truth.

Everyone had been acting based on incomplete information.

But people still got hurt.

“So why did Alexander turn against me?”

Daniel looked nervous.

“Because you were never the target.”

Nathan froze.

“What?”

Daniel continued.

“The target was Michael Carter.”

Nathan stared.

“But he’s dead.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Because Alexander believes Michael escaped punishment.”

Nathan frowned.

“What punishment?”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Michael didn’t just hide your identity.”

Nathan felt his chest tighten.

“What else?”

“He hid what happened to Isabella.”

The room became silent.

Nathan’s face changed.

“What happened?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Your mother wasn’t killed because of the company.”

Nathan waited.

“She was killed because she discovered Michael’s secret.”

Nathan’s mind raced.

Michael.

Again.

The same name.

The same person appearing behind every door.

“What secret?”

Daniel looked at him.

Then whispered:

“Michael Carter was the one who betrayed Thomas Reed.”

Nathan felt like the floor disappeared.

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“He was Thomas’s friend.”

“Yes.”

“He protected me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Daniel answered:

“Because Michael loved power too.”

Nathan stepped back.

“No.”

Daniel continued:

“He didn’t start as a villain.”

A pause.

“But somewhere along the way, he became one.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“How do you know this?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Because Alexander showed me.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“So Alexander is suddenly telling the truth?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“He lies.”

A pause.

“But sometimes…”

“He tells the truth because it hurts people more.”

Nathan looked down.

That was the most terrifying possibility.

Alexander could be evil.

And still reveal real secrets.

Then Daniel reached under his pillow.

He pulled out a small device.

“I stole this from Alexander.”

Ethan immediately stepped forward.

“What is it?”

“A recording.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Of what?”

Daniel handed it over.

“Michael.”

Everyone froze.

Nathan stared.

“My father?”

Daniel nodded.

“The last conversation between Michael Carter and Alexander.”

Nathan took the device.

His hands trembled.

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice appeared.

Michael Carter.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

Alexander’s voice followed.

“You betrayed Thomas.”

Michael answered:

“I did what I had to do.”

Nathan froze.

Alexander continued:

“You destroyed his family.”

Michael replied:

“I protected mine.”

A pause.

Then Alexander asked:

“And what about the boy?”

Silence.

Then Michael said the words that destroyed Nathan:

“He was never supposed to know.”

The recording stopped.

Nathan stood completely still.

Because now he had heard it.

From Michael himself.

A sentence that could mean everything.

Or nothing.

But before he could understand…

His phone received a message.

From Eleanor.

Only one sentence.

“Now you know why Michael was afraid of the truth.”

Nathan stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

“But you still don’t know the final secret.”

A final secret.

The words felt impossible.

After everything.

There was still more.

Nathan looked at Ethan.

“What could possibly be left?”

Ethan looked at the recording.

Then at Nathan.

“I don’t know.”

Outside the hospital window, thunder rolled across the sky.

And Nathan finally understood.

His entire life had been a story written by other people.

But now…

He was going to find the final page himself.
