CHAPTER 2 — The Letter That Erased Everything Charles finally broke the seal. The bank lobby remained so quiet that the soft tear of paper echoed through the marble hall. Inside the envelope was no dramatic speech. Just three documents. A marriage certificate. A trust agreement. And a handwritten letter. Charles recognized the handwriting instantly. His father's. His fingers tightened. His confident smile disappeared completely. He unfolded the letter. "My son, If you are reading this, then I failed to tell you the truth while I was alive. Margaret is not the woman you were taught to hate. She is the woman who saved our family." Charles stopped breathing. His eyes raced across every line. Years earlier, when his father's company had been collapsing under impossible debt, every investor had walked away. Except one. Margaret. She had sold nearly everything she owned to rescue the business. Not for profit. For love. His father had secretly transferred controlling ownership of the holding company into Margaret's trust, believing she was the only person capable of protecting it until Charles was mature enough to lead with integrity. But there was one condition. Charles could never know until he had earned the truth. Instead... Someone had rewritten history. Someone convinced him Margaret was nothing more than a greedy outsider who married his father for money. Charles slowly lowered the letter. His entire childhood suddenly felt manufactured. He turned toward Janet. "You knew?" Janet couldn't answer. Her silence was answer enough. Margaret looked at both of them without anger. Only disappointment. "I waited twenty years for you to ask me one question." Charles whispered, "...Why didn't you tell me?" Margaret's eyes softened. "You never wanted to hear the answer." Before anyone could speak again— The front doors burst open. A dozen investigators wearing financial crime badges entered the lobby. Their leader raised a folder. "We have a warrant." Every face in the bank turned toward Charles. Not Margaret. Charles. / Chapter 1 / 2 3

CHAPTER 3 — The Real Thief

Nobody moved.

The investigators walked directly to the executive offices.

One officer placed a thick file onto the counter.

"We've been tracing fraudulent transfers for eighteen months."

Charles frowned.

"What transfers?"

The investigator opened the file.

Hundreds of transactions.

Millions of dollars.

Company assets quietly disappearing through shell corporations.

Charles stared at every signature.

His own.

Or at least...

What looked like his.

"Those aren't mine."

The investigator nodded.

"We know."

Janet suddenly took one slow step backward.

Then another.

Margaret noticed immediately.

"So it was you."

Janet's composure finally cracked.

"You think I had a choice?"

Security officers surrounded her.

She laughed bitterly.

"You all believed Charles was running the company."

"He wasn't."

"There has always been someone above him."

Charles looked confused.

"What are you talking about?"

Janet reached into her purse.

She removed a small encrypted phone.

One message flashed across the screen.

Leave now. They know everything.

Sent only thirty seconds earlier.

The sender's name froze everyone.

Richard Hayes.

Charles' face drained of color.

"My father..."

Margaret slowly closed her eyes.

"No."

Charles looked up.

"You said he died."

Margaret nodded.

"The man who died wasn't Richard."

The investigator quietly added,

"We believe your father has been alive for fifteen years."

Gasps filled the lobby.

Charles couldn't speak.

The man whose letter had just restored his faith...

Had never actually disappeared.

May you like

And somewhere in the city—

Richard Hayes was already running.
