Chapter 4: Blood Before Midnight

Chapter 4: Blood Before Midnight
Another cramp ripped through my body.
This one was different.
Warmer.
Sharper.
I looked down.
Blood.
Just a few drops.
But enough.
Everything stopped.
Even Adrian froze.
For one terrifying second...
he finally remembered I was carrying his children.
He whispered,
"Mara..."
I ignored him.
I pressed the emergency button on my phone.
Within four minutes...
paramedics rushed upstairs.
The lead medic looked at the bruises covering my shoulders.
The swelling behind my head.
The blood.
"What happened?"
Adrian answered first.
"She fell."
I looked directly into the medic's eyes.
"My husband dragged me across the floor while I was on physician-ordered bed rest."
Silence.
One paramedic quietly activated his body camera.
Another photographed every bruise.
The compliance officer downstairs requested police assistance before anyone even asked.
Vanessa slipped toward the back door.
She never made it.
An officer politely asked her to remain inside the house.
For the first time all evening...
she had no smile left.
As they wheeled me toward the ambulance...
I looked back once.

Adrian stood alone.
Surrounded by investors who suddenly refused to meet his eyes.
