Chapter 12: The Final Key

Chapter 12: The Final Key
4 minutes remaining.
The number flashed on every screen.
Four minutes.
Four minutes until something called the “final transfer” would happen.
Four minutes until years of secrets, betrayals, and hidden plans reached their final stage.
But Isabella heard only one thing.
“The key belongs to you.”
She stared at Michael.
“What does that mean?”
Michael looked at her through the screen.
“It means your father made a mistake.”
Richard immediately reacted.
“Michael.”
But Michael continued.
“He thought protecting you meant keeping you away from power.”
A pause.
“He was wrong.”
Isabella looked at Richard.
Her father looked broken.
“Dad?”
Richard remained silent.
That silence answered more than words.
“You knew?”
Richard finally spoke.
“Yes.”
Her eyes filled with disbelief.
“You knew I was part of this?”
“Not part of it.”
He shook his head.
“The opposite.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Richard looked down.
“Because I wanted you to have a normal life.”
Isabella laughed bitterly.
“A normal life?”
She looked around.
“At a billionaire wedding surrounded by lies?”
Nobody responded.
The truth was uncomfortable.
Because Richard had tried to protect her.
But his protection had become another prison.
Michael watched silently.
Then he spoke.
“Your father never understood something.”
“What?”
“You cannot protect someone from the world by hiding the world from them.”
The sentence stayed in the air.
Because everyone knew it was true.
Elena stepped forward.
“What exactly happens when the timer reaches zero?”
Michael looked at her.
“The Laurent inheritance protocol activates.”
Daniel frowned.
“Inheritance protocol?”
“Yes.”
Michael smiled.
“The system created by Alexander Laurent.”
The screens displayed old files.
“The founder of the Laurent empire knew that power could not be trusted to one person.”
The documents showed encrypted systems.
Secret agreements.
Hidden ownership structures.
“He created a final mechanism.”
Michael looked at Isabella.
“A mechanism only activated by the Laurent bloodline.”
Thomas Rivera looked shocked.
“Alexander never told anyone.”
“Exactly.”
Michael smiled.
“Because he knew everyone would try to control it.”
Elena looked at Isabella.
“So your grandfather created a final safeguard.”
“Yes.”
Michael nodded.
“And your father hid it.”
Richard spoke.
“Because it was too dangerous.”
Michael laughed.
“No.”
He looked at Richard.
“Because you were afraid someone would use it against you.”
The accusation hurt.
Because part of it was true.
Isabella looked at the countdown.
3 minutes remaining.
“What happens if nobody does anything?”
Michael answered calmly.
“The system chooses.”
Daniel frowned.
“Chooses what?”
“The next owner.”
The room went silent.
“And who does it choose?”
Michael looked at Isabella.
“You.”
Everyone froze.
Isabella stepped back.
“No.”
Michael continued.
“You are the last direct Laurent descendant.”
Daniel looked at her.
“But I’m Richard’s son.”
Michael shook his head.
“Your father removed himself from the succession years ago.”
Daniel looked shocked.
“What?”
Richard closed his eyes.
“I did what I had to do.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You erased me.”
The pain in his voice was obvious.
Richard looked at him.
“I was trying to save you.”
“Everyone says that.”
Daniel’s voice became angry.
“Everyone says they are saving someone while destroying them.”
The sentence affected everyone.
Especially Elena.
Because it described the entire night.
Isabella looked at Daniel.
Then at Richard.
Then at Michael.
She realized something.
Every person here believed they were the hero.
Every person had a reason.
Every person had a wound.
And every person had caused damage.
She stepped forward.
“What does the key require?”
Everyone looked at her.
Elena immediately said:
“Isabella.”
But Isabella continued.
“I asked a question.”
Michael smiled.
“Good.”
He looked almost proud.
“You’re finally thinking like a Laurent.”
Elena frowned.
“That is exactly what we should avoid.”
Michael ignored her.
“The system requires a decision.”
“A decision?”
“Yes.”
He looked at Isabella.
“The heir must choose.”
“Choose what?”
“Who receives control.”
The rooftop became silent.
The final key was not a password.
Not a fingerprint.
Not a code.
It was a choice.
Isabella looked confused.
“Control of what?”
Michael answered:
“Everything.”
The screens displayed numbers.
Companies.
Assets.
Investments.
Thousands of billions.
The power of generations.
Isabella felt overwhelmed.
“You want me to choose who controls this?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Michael smiled.
“Because Alexander Laurent believed the person with the most power should not be the strongest.”
A pause.
“They should be the person who understands the cost.”
For a moment, Isabella said nothing.
Then she looked at everyone.
Her fiancé.
Her uncle.
Her grandfather.
Her father.
Elena.
Thomas.
All people who had fought over power.
All people who believed they knew what was best.
She finally understood.
The problem was never the money.
The problem was the people who wanted to own it.
The countdown continued.
2 minutes remaining.
Adrian suddenly stepped forward.
“Isabella.”
Everyone turned.
He looked different.
Not arrogant.
Not confident.
Just desperate.
“Listen to me.”
Isabella stared.
“You lied to me.”
“I know.”
“You used me.”
“I know.”
“Why should I listen?”
Adrian looked down.
“Because I know how to stop this.”
Michael smiled.
“Interesting.”
Adrian ignored him.
“Michael doesn’t want you to choose.”
Everyone looked confused.
“What?”
Adrian looked at Isabella.
“He wants the system to choose you.”
Michael’s expression changed slightly.
Adrian continued.
“Because once you become owner, he can control you.”
Elena looked at Michael.
“Is that true?”
Michael said nothing.
That was enough.
Isabella looked at him.
“You lied.”
Michael replied calmly:
“I never said I wanted you to have freedom.”
The honesty shocked everyone.
The countdown continued.
1 minute remaining.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Isabella.”
She looked at him.
“Whatever you choose…”
He paused.
“Don’t choose based on revenge.”
A silence.
“Don’t choose based on fear.”
He looked around.
“Choose based on what you believe is right.”
Elena looked at Isabella.
And for the first time tonight...
she didn’t try to guide her.
She simply waited.
The final seconds appeared.
10
The room became silent.
9
Everyone watched Isabella.
8
Michael smiled.
7
Richard looked afraid.
6
Daniel waited.
5
Elena stood still.
4
Isabella closed her eyes.
3
She thought about her father.
Her grandfather.
Her life.
The lies.
The pain.
The truth.
2
She opened her eyes.
1
The system asked one final question.
“Who shall inherit?”
The entire rooftop waited.
Isabella placed her hand on the screen.
And entered her answer.
Everyone watched.
Then the system responded.
A new message appeared.
Not:
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Not:
OWNERSHIP APPROVED.
Instead, it said:
“REJECTED.”
Everyone froze.
Michael’s smile disappeared.
“What?”
Isabella stepped back.
The system displayed another message.
“The heir has refused ownership.”
Silence.
Michael stared.
“No…”
Isabella looked at him.
“I’m not choosing who controls the world.”
A pause.
“I’m ending the game.”
The screens began shutting down.
The companies.
The accounts.
The transfers.
Everything stopped.
For the first time that night...
Michael Laurent looked defeated.
But then he smiled.
A slow, dangerous smile.
Because he knew something Isabella didn’t.
The system had stopped.
But the war had not.
Michael looked at the screen.
“You made the same mistake your father made.”
Isabella frowned.
“What?”
Michael answered:
“You thought refusing power meant escaping it.”
A pause.
The lights suddenly went black.
Then one final message appeared.
“BACKUP PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.”
Elena’s face changed.
“No…”
Isabella looked at her.
“What?”
Elena whispered:
“There was a second system.”
The rooftop shook.
And Michael laughed.
May you like
“Welcome to the real game.”
