Chapter 8: The Price of Borrowed Luxury

Chapter 8: The Price of Borrowed Luxury
Vanessa's hand remained frozen around the diamond necklace.
For the first time since arriving in Las Vegas...
She looked frightened.
Not embarrassed.
Not angry.
Frightened.
The federal investigator stepped forward with quiet professionalism.
"Ms. Blake."
"I'm going to ask you one more time."
"Please remove the necklace."
She instinctively stepped backward.
"It was a gift."
The investigator nodded.
"So the records indicate."
He opened a slim evidence folder.
"Invoice Number P-44178."
"Purchased in Paris."
"Paid with Omnitech acquisition funds."
He placed a color photograph beside the invoice.
Vanessa, smiling inside the jewelry boutique.
The exact necklace around her neck.
Timestamp.
Location.
Receipt.
Everything matched.
"I didn't know."
Her voice cracked.
"I swear I didn't know."
Across the room...
Evelyn watched quietly.
There was no satisfaction in her eyes.
Only disappointment.
Arthur Whitmore noticed.
"You believe her."
It wasn't a question.
Evelyn answered honestly.
"I believe she enjoyed the gifts."
She paused.
"I'm not sure she ever asked who paid for them."
Arthur nodded slowly.
"There is a difference."
The investigator turned toward Vanessa.
"Whether you knew or not..."
"The necklace is evidence."
After several long seconds...
Her hands slowly moved behind her neck.
The clasp trembled.
She couldn't undo it.
Not because it was difficult.
Because reality had finally caught up with her.
One of the female investigators stepped forward.
"May I help?"
Vanessa nodded without speaking.
A soft click echoed through the boardroom.
The necklace slipped free.
The investigator placed it inside a transparent evidence bag.
No one spoke.
The diamonds still sparkled brilliantly.
Yet somehow...
They had never looked less valuable.
Dominic watched in stunned silence.
Vanessa turned toward him.
"You said..."
"...everything was yours."
He lowered his eyes.
"I thought..."
She laughed bitterly.
"You thought?"
Her voice grew louder.
"You promised me houses."
"You promised me yachts."
"You promised me a future."
"You told me your wife didn't matter."
"You told me the company couldn't function without you."
Every sentence struck harder than the last.
Dominic had no answer.
Because for the first time...
He was hearing his own lies through someone else's disappointment.
The General Counsel quietly closed another folder.
"There remains one unresolved issue."
Everyone looked toward him.
"The Presidential Suite."
Dominic frowned.
"What about it?"
"It was reserved under Whitmore Holdings' executive hospitality program."
"So?"
"So your executive authorization ended at 1:31 a.m."
He checked his watch.
"It is now 7:12 a.m."
A brief pause.
"You have technically occupied the suite without authorization for five hours and forty-one minutes."
Vanessa blinked.
"You mean..."
"We're being kicked out?"
Carter answered politely.
"No."
"You are being checked out."
The distinction hung in the air.
Outside the boardroom...
The hotel had begun serving breakfast.
Guests wandered through the marble lobby.
Most had no idea what was happening upstairs.
Some, however...
Recognized the unusual number of attorneys and investigators arriving before sunrise.
Rumors quietly began to spread.
Nothing more.
Just whispers.
Inside the boardroom...
The Interim CEO received a secure message.
He glanced at the screen.
Then looked toward Evelyn.
"The Asian markets have opened."
"And?"
"The share price has remained stable."
A faint smile crossed several directors' faces.
Investor confidence.
The one thing they had worked all night to protect.
The Interim CEO continued.
"Our statement has been well received."
"No signs of panic selling."
Arthur smiled proudly.
"The company survives."
Evelyn answered softly.
"It always was bigger than one person."
The federal investigator returned to business.
"Mr. Hale."
"We've obtained permission to review your personal devices."
Dominic hesitated.
"My phone contains privileged information."
"So does every executive phone."
The investigator extended his hand.
"Please."
For several seconds...
Dominic didn't move.
Then...
He slowly removed the matte-black executive phone from his pocket.
The same phone Evelyn had recognized the previous night.
The one he had carried for six years.
He placed it on the table.
The investigator picked it up carefully.
"Thank you."
A forensic technician immediately sealed it inside an evidence pouch.
Dominic watched it disappear.
It felt strangely symbolic.
The last tangible piece of authority had just left his hands.
Vanessa quietly gathered her belongings.
Designer handbag.
Sunglasses.
Cosmetics.
She looked around the luxurious boardroom one final time.
Everything she had admired the previous evening...
Now felt intimidating.
She looked toward Evelyn.
"I owe you an apology."
The room became silent.
Evelyn met her eyes.
Vanessa continued.
"I judged you."
"I thought simple clothes meant a simple life."
"I thought kindness meant weakness."
She swallowed.
"I was wrong."
For several moments...
No one spoke.
Finally Evelyn replied.
"Yes."
It wasn't cruel.
It wasn't forgiving.
It was simply...
True.
Vanessa nodded slowly.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
Evelyn answered just as calmly.
"This morning isn't about forgiveness."
"It's about consequences."
Vanessa closed her eyes briefly.
"I understand."
Whether she truly did...
No one could yet say.
The lead investigator checked his notes.
"We've completed today's preservation process."
He looked toward Dominic.
"There will be additional interviews."
"Civil proceedings."
"And possibly criminal proceedings."
"You'll receive formal notice through counsel."
Dominic barely nodded.
His shoulders had slumped.
His expensive suit suddenly looked like a costume from another life.
Carter stepped forward.
"Mr. Hale."
"Ms. Blake."
"Your personal luggage has been packed."
"Our staff has separated your private belongings from company property."
He handed each of them a small claim envelope.
"Transportation is available whenever you're ready."
Vanessa stared at the envelope.
Just yesterday...
She had imagined leaving the Sterling Crown as the future wife of one of America's most successful CEOs.
Instead...
She was leaving as a witness in a federal investigation.
As Dominic reached the doorway, he stopped.
Without turning around, he asked quietly,
"Evelyn..."
She looked up.
"When did you stop believing in me?"
A long silence filled the room.
Finally she answered.
"I didn't."
He slowly turned.
Confusion filled his face.
She continued.
"I stopped believing your excuses."
Another silence.
Then she added,
"There's a difference."
Dominic lowered his head.
For perhaps the first time in years...
He understood exactly what she meant.
He opened the door.
Walked into the hallway.
Vanessa followed several steps behind.
Neither of them noticed that, for the first time since arriving at the Sterling Crown...
No one looked at Dominic Hale with admiration.
Only with quiet recognition.
The legend of a celebrated CEO had ended.
Now...
May you like
The truth was beginning to walk beside him.
