Chapter 5: The Walk to Judgment

Chapter 5: The Walk to Judgment
The knock came precisely at 6:18 a.m.
Three soft taps.
Not urgent.
Not hesitant.
Measured.
Professional.
Dominic glanced toward the suite door.
"Room service?"
Vanessa smiled.
"I didn't order breakfast."
Another three knocks echoed through the Presidential Suite.
Dominic opened the door.
Standing outside was Carter.
Perfectly dressed.
Perfectly composed.
The same concierge Dominic had barely acknowledged the night before.
Except now...
Something was different.
His posture.
His expression.
The quiet confidence in his voice.
"Good morning, Mr. Hale."
Dominic nodded.
"Carter."
"What can I do for you?"
"The Chairwoman of Whitmore Holdings requests your presence."
Dominic frowned.
"The Chairwoman?"
"That's correct."
"For what?"
"I'm not authorized to discuss the matter."
Dominic checked his watch.
"I don't have any meetings scheduled."
"I'm afraid this meeting wasn't placed on your calendar."
Vanessa appeared beside him.
"Who's the Chairwoman?"
Carter looked at her politely.
"The Chairwoman."
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"Tell whoever she is we're busy."
Carter never looked away from Dominic.
"The invitation is not optional."
Silence.
For the first time...
Dominic noticed two hotel security officers standing quietly at the end of the hallway.
Not threatening.
Simply waiting.
Something cold settled in his stomach.
"I'll be there in five minutes."
Carter inclined his head.
"We'll escort you."
Then he turned and walked away.
The suite door closed.
Vanessa folded her arms.
"What was that about?"
Dominic forced a laugh.
"Probably some VIP partnership."
"Maybe they're offering Omnitech another hospitality contract."
She nodded.
"See?"
"I told you everything would work out."
He smiled.
But it didn't reach his eyes.
Ten minutes later...
The elevator descended in complete silence.
Dominic stood beside Carter.
Neither man spoke.
The mirrored walls reflected Dominic's immaculate navy suit.
His silver watch.
His polished shoes.
Outwardly...
He still looked every inch the successful CEO.
Inside...
Questions multiplied.
Why had none of his executives answered?
Why were his accounts frozen?
Why did Carter suddenly treat him like... a guest?
The elevator chimed.
The doors opened.
Executive Floor.
Dominic had never been there before.
He hadn't even known it existed.
The hallway was lined with dark walnut panels, museum-quality artwork, and discreet security cameras.
Every twenty feet stood another security officer.
Not hotel guards.
Corporate security.
Each wore a small silver pin bearing the crest of Whitmore Holdings.
None acknowledged Dominic.
They simply watched him pass.
Vanessa whispered,
"This is... intense."
Dominic nodded slowly.
"Stay close."
Carter stopped before two enormous double doors.
Polished mahogany.
Bronze handles.
Above them...
A simple plaque.
Executive Boardroom One
Carter turned.
"The Chairwoman is waiting."
He opened the doors.
Dominic stepped inside.
Then stopped.
The room was full.
Around the massive oval table sat twelve directors.
Senior attorneys.
Federal compliance officials.
Corporate investigators.
Financial auditors.
Every face turned toward him.
No one smiled.
No one greeted him.
At the far end of the table...
A single chair remained empty.
Dominic looked around.
"Good morning."
Silence.
He frowned.
"I'm Dominic Hale."
"I believe there's been some misunderstanding."
Still...
No response.
Then...
The side door opened.
Every person in the room stood.
Instantly.
Without being asked.
Without hesitation.
Dominic turned.
His heart skipped a beat.
Evelyn walked in.
The same faded beige cardigan.
The same black leggings.
The same worn white sneakers.
The same weathered leather tote.
Nothing had changed.
Except the room.
Every director waited until she reached the head of the table.
Only after she sat...
Did everyone else sit.
Dominic remained standing.
Confused.
Vanessa looked from face to face.
"What is this?"
No one answered.
Evelyn folded her hands calmly.
"Good morning, Dominic."
He stared.
"Evelyn..."
"What are you doing here?"
She looked at him for several quiet seconds.
Then replied.
"Working."
A faint ripple passed through the room.
Not amusement.
Recognition.
Dominic laughed awkwardly.
"Enough games."
"Who's the Chairwoman?"
Evelyn met his gaze.
"I am."
Silence crashed into the room.
Vanessa blinked.
"What?"
Dominic smiled.
Then laughed.
Then stopped laughing.
Because no one else had.
"This isn't funny."
Evelyn slid a leather folder across the polished table.
"Open it."
He didn't move.
"I said..."
"Open it."
Slowly...
He reached forward.
Inside lay a single sheet of paper.
BOARD RESOLUTION
His eyes moved down the page.
His breathing changed.
Effective 1:31 a.m.
Dominic Hale is removed from the position of Chief Executive Officer of Omnitech Solutions.
He stared at the words.
Read them again.
Then again.
"No."
His voice was barely audible.
"No."
"This is impossible."
"The Board can't remove me."
One of the directors finally spoke.
"It already has."
"Unanimously."
Dominic looked around the table.
"Twelve..."
"To zero."
Another director answered calmly.
"Correct."
His hands began to tremble.
"You... can't..."
"I'm the CEO."
"Were," the General Counsel corrected.
"The legal distinction is important."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"There has to be some mistake."
"You can't fire him like this."
The attorney looked directly at her.
"Ms. Blake."
"You are not employed by Whitmore Holdings."
"You have no standing in this proceeding."
Her face flushed crimson.
Dominic looked at Evelyn.
"You knew?"
She answered quietly.
"I learned six months ago."
His face drained of color.
"Six..."
"Months?"
"I asked investigators to verify before I confronted you."
He swallowed hard.
"You hired investigators?"
"I hired professionals."
She opened another folder.
"We'll begin with Paris."
A photograph appeared on the large screen.
Dominic and Vanessa outside the Ritz.
Date.
Time.
Corporate expense number.
Then another.
Dubai.
Monaco.
Milan.
Napa Valley.
The Bahamas.
Every lie.
Every forged itinerary.
Every fake conference.
Displayed in perfect chronological order.
Vanessa's confidence disappeared.
She whispered,
"Dominic..."
He couldn't answer.
He was still staring at the screen.
The Chief Compliance Officer stood.
"For six months..."
"You billed personal luxury travel to shareholders."
"You submitted false expense reports."
"You authorized fraudulent reimbursements."
"You approved forged accounting records."
Another investigator continued.
"You diverted charitable foundation funds."
A new receipt filled the screen.
The bottle of Bordeaux.
Purchased with disaster relief money.
Dominic closed his eyes.
"No..."
"I didn't..."
The investigator placed the signed authorization beside the receipt.
"Your electronic signature."
His own initials.
Timestamp.
IP address.
Device ID.
There was nowhere left to look.
Nowhere left to hide.
Finally...
Evelyn reached into the pocket of her cardigan.
She unfolded the same five-dollar bill.
The crease was still visible.
She placed it gently on the center of the table.
Every eye followed it.
"You remember this?"
Dominic couldn't speak.
"You had one moment."
She looked at him with quiet sadness rather than anger.
"One chance..."
"To tell her to stop."
"One chance to remember who you were."
Her voice remained calm.
"You chose silence."
She slid the folded bill toward him.
"So today..."
"I'm returning your money."
The room remained perfectly still.
No one breathed.
No one interrupted.
Outside...
The morning sun climbed higher over Las Vegas.
Inside Executive Boardroom One...
Dominic Hale finally understood that the woman he had dismissed as a "poor wife" had never come to the Sterling Crown to catch him.
She had come...
To give him one last opportunity to save himself.
May you like
And he had thrown it away.
