Chapter 2: The Bride Walks Down the Aisle The sound of footsteps echoed through the marble halls. Slow. Measured. Completely unaware that four hundred guests had fallen into absolute silence. Every eye shifted toward the grand staircase. First came Richard Ashford. His tuxedo was immaculate. His silver hair was perfectly combed. His face wore the same calm, confident smile that had earned him decades of respect in boardrooms and charity galas alike. Just behind him... Victoria Langston appeared. Her ivory wedding dress flowed down the stairs like a waterfall of silk. The diamond tiara sparkled beneath the chandeliers. Anyone arriving at that exact moment would have believed they were witnessing the entrance of the happiest bride in America. Neither of them realized Eleanor had already exposed what she had seen. Neither of them noticed hundreds of suspicious eyes. Richard escorted Victoria down the staircase with practiced elegance. To everyone else, it looked like a future father-in-law proudly walking his son's bride to the ceremony. Only Adrian knew how ironic the image truly was. Richard reached the bottom step first. "Sorry to keep everyone waiting," he said with a pleasant smile. "Victoria was feeling a little nervous." Several guests forced polite smiles. No one answered. Richard frowned ever so slightly. The atmosphere felt... Wrong. He looked toward Eleanor. She stood pale as stone. Her eyes were fixed on him with a mixture of horror and disgust. Then he looked at Adrian. The groom was smiling. Not politely. Not nervously. Almost... Satisfied. For the first time that day, Richard felt something he hadn't experienced in years. Unease. Victoria approached Adrian. "You look handsome." She leaned in, intending to kiss his cheek. Adrian took one step backward. Her lips met empty air. A tiny movement. Almost invisible. Yet everyone noticed. Victoria laughed awkwardly. "Cold feet?" "No." His answer was calm. "Just making sure we're both standing exactly where we need to be." She blinked. "What does that mean?" "You'll understand soon." A strange tension settled between them. Richard stepped forward with an easy laugh. "Come on, son. Everyone's waiting." Adrian nodded. "You're right." He turned toward the officiant. "We should begin." The elderly officiant cleared his throat. "Dearly beloved..." "No." Adrian raised one finger. "I'd like to say a few words first." Richard's smile stiffened. "This isn't in the program." "I know." Guests shifted in their seats. Journalists quietly activated their recording devices. Something unusual was about to happen. Adrian slowly turned to face the audience. "When I announced my engagement eight months ago, many people congratulated me." Soft murmurs rippled through the ballroom. "They called me fortunate." "They said I had found the perfect woman." Victoria smiled politely for the cameras. Adrian continued. "They were only half right." She glanced at him. "What are you doing?" He ignored the question. "I did find the perfect woman." A pause. "The perfect liar." Gasps filled the ballroom. Victoria's smile vanished. Richard immediately stepped forward. "Adrian." His voice remained calm. "This isn't funny." "I agree." Adrian looked directly at him. "It stopped being funny eight months ago." Richard's eyes narrowed. Eight months. The exact period Adrian had mentioned earlier. "You've been investigating us," Richard said quietly. Adrian didn't answer. His silence was answer enough. Victoria folded her arms. "If you're trying to embarrass me because you got nervous about marriage..." She laughed. "...this is pathetic." Several guests nodded uncertainly. Maybe she was right. Maybe Adrian was having a breakdown. Richard seized the opportunity. "My son has been under tremendous stress." He placed a reassuring hand on Adrian's shoulder. "We'll postpone the ceremony." Adrian gently removed the hand. "Don't touch me." Richard's smile disappeared. Only for a fraction of a second. Then it returned. "I understand your emotions." "You don't understand anything." Adrian reached into his jacket. Again. Guests leaned forward. Was this finally the evidence? Instead... He produced a small black envelope. Nothing more. He held it between two fingers. Richard stared at it. Something changed in his face. Just for an instant. Fear. Tiny. Barely visible. But Adrian saw it. So did Eleanor. "So," Adrian said softly. "You recognize it." Richard answered too quickly. "No." "You didn't even ask what it is." Silence. The room suddenly felt much colder. Victoria crossed her arms. "Enough games." She stepped closer. "If you don't trust me..." She removed her engagement ring. "...then maybe this wedding shouldn't happen." She placed the enormous diamond in Adrian's palm. "I won't beg." Several guests admired her confidence. She looked composed. Elegant. Wronged. Exactly the image she wanted. Adrian looked down at the ring. Then smiled. "I bought this ring six months ago." "So?" "I never proposed with it." Victoria froze. Richard looked sharply toward her. Neither of them spoke. Adrian closed his fingers around the diamond. "The proposal happened ten months ago." He looked into Victoria's eyes. "So tell everyone..." His voice remained almost gentle. "...how did you receive a ring that hadn't been purchased yet?" Complete silence. Victoria's face lost all color. She opened her mouth. Nothing came out. Richard immediately interrupted. "Memory is unreliable." Adrian laughed softly. "No." He lifted his phone. "I filmed the proposal." The enormous screen behind the ballroom lit up. Everyone turned. A private video began to play. Adrian was standing on a beach. Sunset. Waves crashing behind him. He knelt. Opened a ring box. Inside... A simple sapphire ring. Not the massive diamond Victoria had just returned. Guests frowned. Richard slowly clenched his fists. Victoria's breathing became uneven. Adrian paused the video. "You said this diamond was the one I proposed with." He held it up. "But that's impossible." Nobody spoke. One lie. Small. Simple. Yet devastating. If she lied about something so easily proven... What else had she lied about? Richard stepped forward once more. "This proves nothing." "It proves she remembered the wrong ring." Adrian nodded. "You're absolutely right." Relief briefly flashed across Richard's face. Then Adrian added, "So let's move to something harder to misremember." He opened the black envelope. Inside was a single photograph. Old. Slightly faded. He didn't show it to the guests. He handed it directly to Richard. The older man's hands trembled as he looked down. It was a picture taken twenty-seven years earlier. A younger Richard. Standing beside a woman no one recognized. And between them... A little girl. Around three years old. Richard's pupils widened. He whispered only two words. "Impossible..." Victoria's eyes searched his face. "What is it?" He didn't answer. Adrian spoke instead. "Would you like to explain who that little girl is..." He paused long enough for every heartbeat in the ballroom to become audible. "...or should I?" Richard looked as though the floor had vanished beneath his feet. For the first time in decades... The great Richard Ashford had no words. End of Chapter 2 / Chapter 9 / 14

Chapter 10: The Man in the Tunnel

Chapter 10: The Man in the Tunnel

The footsteps stopped.

The silence that followed was somehow even more frightening.

Every flashlight in the hidden chamber turned toward the narrow tunnel carved through the earth beneath the Ashford Estate.

Detective Claire Donovan slowly drew her service pistol.

"Police!" she called into the darkness.

"No sudden movements."

No answer.

Only the distant sound of water dripping from the stone ceiling.

The tunnel was barely wide enough for one person.

Its walls were rough, unfinished, and covered in decades of dust.

Except...

For one thing.

The dust had been disturbed.

Fresh footprints.

Someone had walked through here recently.

Claire turned toward two officers.

"You stay with the crime scene."

She looked at Adrian.

"You stay behind me."

Adrian nodded.

"I've waited twenty-seven years."

"I'm not turning back now."

Claire didn't argue.

Instead, she switched on the brighter beam attached to her flashlight and stepped into the tunnel.

Behind her came Adrian.

Then two armed officers.

The passage sloped gently downward.

Every step echoed.

After thirty meters...

The air changed.

It smelled cleaner.

Someone had opened another entrance recently.

Claire noticed scrape marks on the wall.

Heavy objects had been dragged through here.

Boxes.

Or perhaps...

A body.

Back in the ballroom...

Richard Ashford stood quietly between two officers.

Guests whispered from every corner.

Victoria sat alone on the front pew, staring at the floor.

Eleanor slowly approached Richard.

"I have one question."

He looked at her without speaking.

"Did you know Emily was down there?"

A long silence followed.

Finally...

Richard answered.

"No."

She searched his face.

For the first time in their thirty-year marriage...

She couldn't tell whether he was telling the truth.

Deep beneath the mansion...

Claire suddenly raised a hand.

Everyone stopped.

Ahead...

A faint light.

Not daylight.

An electric light.

Someone had installed a bulb.

Recently.

The group moved closer.

The tunnel opened into another hidden room.

This one was much larger.

Shelves lined the walls.

Old filing cabinets stood in neat rows.

A portable generator hummed quietly in one corner.

It was still running.

Someone had been here.

Very recently.

Adrian slowly turned in a circle.

"This wasn't built by my grandfather."

Claire nodded.

"No."

"The wiring is modern."

She walked toward a metal desk.

On top sat an open notebook.

Its last page had been written only hours earlier.

The ink was still fresh.

Claire read aloud.

"They're finally looking."

Another line.

"Richard has run out of time."

Another.

"If you're reading this..."

She stopped.

The final sentence made her frown.

"...don't trust Detective Donovan."

The room fell silent.

Adrian looked at her.

Claire slowly closed the notebook.

"I've never seen this before."

One of the officers immediately said,

"It could be a trap."

Claire agreed.

"It probably is."

Adrian studied her face.

"You expected me to doubt you."

Claire nodded.

"Whoever wrote this wanted exactly that."

One officer searched the filing cabinets.

"Detective."

He pulled out dozens of folders.

"These are personnel files."

Claire walked over.

Every folder belonged to someone connected to Ashford Biotech.

Executives.

Lawyers.

Security guards.

Judges.

Journalists.

Even politicians.

Each file contained photographs.

Financial records.

Private correspondence.

Some included surveillance photos taken years apart.

Adrian's expression darkened.

"My father built a blackmail archive."

Claire slowly shook her head.

"No."

She held up one folder.

"It's not his handwriting."

Another folder.

Different handwriting again.

A third.

Also different.

Someone else had been watching everyone.

Including Richard.

Then Adrian noticed something.

One filing cabinet stood open.

Its drawers had been emptied.

Recently.

The dust outlines of missing folders were still visible.

Someone had removed them.

In a hurry.

Claire crouched beside the cabinet.

Only one folder remained.

Its tab read:

ASHFORD, RICHARD

She opened it.

Inside...

Only one photograph.

Richard Ashford.

Standing beside George Ashford.

Taken two days before George died.

Nothing unusual.

Until Adrian flipped it over.

On the back...

Someone had written in neat blue ink.

"He isn't the mastermind."

Adrian stared at the words.

Claire looked at him.

"The same message Emily left."

"Two monsters."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"If Richard isn't the mastermind..."

"...then who's been controlling everything?"

A metallic sound echoed from deeper inside the chamber.

Everyone spun around.

A steel door at the far end had begun to swing shut.

Someone was escaping.

"Stop!"

Claire shouted.

The officers sprinted forward.

By the time they reached the doorway...

It slammed shut with a deafening clang.

One officer tried the handle.

Locked.

From the other side.

Then...

A voice came through an old intercom mounted above the door.

Calm.

Distorted.

Neither male nor female.

"You finally found my office."

Adrian froze.

Claire immediately signaled for silence.

The voice continued.

"I've been waiting a long time for this family reunion."

"Who are you?" Claire demanded.

A soft laugh echoed through the speaker.

"Names don't matter."

"The truth does."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Did you kill Emily Bennett?"

"No."

"Did you kill my grandfather?"

Another pause.

"No."

Claire frowned.

"Then why hide all this evidence?"

The voice answered without emotion.

"Because dead men reveal more than living ones."

No one understood.

The speaker crackled again.

"Richard believes he was the villain."

"He wasn't."

Adrian felt a chill run through him.

"What are you talking about?"

"Richard committed crimes."

"He destroyed lives."

"He buried the truth."

"But..."

The voice paused deliberately.

"...he never ordered George Ashford's death."

The tunnel became eerily quiet.

Adrian looked at Claire.

Claire looked back.

If that statement was true...

Everything they believed about the case had just changed.

The distorted voice spoke one final sentence.

"If you want the real killer..."

A mechanical click interrupted the transmission.

"...ask the only witness who has lied to all of you since the beginning."

The intercom went dead.

Silence.

No footsteps.

No generator.

Nothing.

Adrian's mind raced.

Only witness?

Who?

Claire slowly turned toward him.

"There were only a handful of living witnesses."

Adrian whispered each name.

"My mother..."

"Margaret..."

"Harold..."

He stopped.

His eyes widened.

"No..."

Claire saw the realization forming.

"So did I," she said quietly.

Without another word, they ran back toward the staircase.

Because upstairs...

One of those witnesses had been left alone.

And if the voice was telling the truth...

May you like

That witness had been lying from the very first moment they walked into the ballroom.
