Chapter 5: The Case That Never Truly Closed

Chapter 5: The Case That Never Truly Closed
The ballroom doors remained open.
Detective Claire Donovan walked inside with the unhurried confidence of someone who had already rehearsed this moment a hundred times.
The conversations stopped.
The orchestra remained frozen.
Even the reporters lowered their cameras for a second.
A police detective carrying an evidence bag into the middle of a billionaire's wedding was not something anyone had imagined.
Claire stopped ten feet from the altar.
Her sharp blue eyes settled on Richard Ashford.
"So," she said evenly.
"We finally meet without your lawyers."
Richard recovered almost instantly.
His polite smile returned.
"Detective Donovan."
"I wasn't expecting law enforcement at my wedding."
Claire tilted her head.
"It isn't your wedding."
A ripple of nervous laughter spread through the guests.
Richard's smile stiffened.
"No."
She continued calmly.
"It's your son's wedding."
"And from what I've seen..."
She glanced around the silent ballroom.
"...that ceremony has already ended."
Victoria felt the floor shift beneath her.
Everything was falling apart.
Not gradually.
Not in pieces.
All at once.
She looked toward Richard.
He had promised this would be easy.
Marry Adrian.
Gain legal access to Ashford family assets.
Within a year...
Everything would belong to them.
Instead...
A detective had arrived.
A murder investigation had resurfaced.
Hundreds of witnesses were recording every second.
For the first time since she'd entered the mansion...
Victoria wondered whether Richard had lied to her.
Claire placed the sealed evidence bag on the grand piano.
Inside rested a small glass bottle.
Its faded pharmacy label had almost disappeared with age.
Eleanor frowned.
"What is that?"
Claire didn't answer immediately.
She looked toward Adrian.
"May I?"
Adrian nodded.
She carefully opened the bag.
Without touching the bottle directly, she lifted it with a clean evidence cloth.
"This medicine bottle was recovered three weeks ago."
Richard remained silent.
Claire continued.
"It belonged to George Ashford."
Guests exchanged confused looks.
"So?"
Richard asked.
"My father had heart medication."
"He did."
Claire nodded.
"And according to every medical report..."
She held the bottle toward the crowd.
"...these tablets were supposed to save his life."
She paused.
"But laboratory testing found..."
Another pause.
"...there were no heart pills inside."
Silence.
"There never were."
The room became deathly still.
Instead of medication...
The bottle had contained harmless sugar tablets.
George Ashford hadn't died because his medicine failed.
He had died because...
He had never received the medicine at all.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
"No..."
Claire slowly looked toward Richard.
"Someone replaced every tablet."
Richard folded his arms.
"Interesting theory."
"It's evidence."
"No."
He smiled faintly.
"It's speculation."
Claire expected that response.
She reached into her briefcase.
Another evidence bag.
This time...
Containing a fingerprint report.
"Normally..."
she explained,
"...fingerprints disappear after twenty-seven years."
Several guests nodded.
"However..."
She laid the report beside the bottle.
"...George stored his medication inside an airtight mahogany cabinet."
Adrian frowned.
"I remember that cabinet."
Claire nodded.
"It preserved more than anyone expected."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
She opened the report.
"There were three identifiable fingerprint sets."
She raised one finger.
"George Ashford."
A second.
"His physician."
A third.
"And..."
She looked directly into Richard's eyes.
"...Richard Ashford."
Richard laughed.
"He's my father."
"I visited him."
"My fingerprints would naturally be there."
"Correct."
Claire nodded.
"They would."
Richard smiled confidently.
Finally.
Something he could explain.
Then Claire added,
"But there's one problem."
Richard's smile faded.
"The doctor's fingerprints..."
She tapped the report.
"...appear on the outside of the medicine bottle."
"Your fingerprints..."
Another tap.
"...appear beneath the original pharmacy label."
Silence.
No one understood.
Claire explained.
"The label had been carefully peeled away."
"The bottle was emptied."
"A new label was glued over the old adhesive."
She looked at Richard.
"Your fingerprints were trapped underneath."
The ballroom erupted into stunned whispers.
Richard said nothing.
For nearly ten seconds.
Then...
"You expect people to believe a fingerprint report from nearly thirty years ago?"
"No."
Claire answered.
"I expect them to believe science."
Victoria suddenly stepped forward.
"This is ridiculous."
Everyone looked at her.
"You've all decided Richard is guilty."
She pointed toward Adrian.
"This entire wedding was a trap."
Adrian met her gaze calmly.
"It was."
Gasps echoed again.
"You admit it?"
"Yes."
"I invited everyone here because lies survive in private."
He slowly looked around the ballroom.
"The truth survives in public."
The sentence hung in the air.
Claire almost smiled.
"So that's why you insisted on today's date."
Adrian nodded.
"I needed witnesses."
Richard quietly adjusted his cufflinks.
His heartbeat had become faster.
Not enough for others to notice.
Enough for him.
He had spent decades planning every conversation.
Every investment.
Every public appearance.
He had always stayed three moves ahead.
Yet today...
Adrian kept revealing evidence Richard didn't know existed.
That meant only one thing.
Someone else had helped.
Someone close.
Someone inside.
His eyes slowly scanned the ballroom.
Employees.
Executives.
Family friends.
Security staff.
One of them had betrayed him.
Claire closed the evidence file.
"I'd like to ask one simple question."
She faced Richard directly.
"Where were you between 7:30 and 8:15 p.m. on October 14th..."
She glanced at the file.
"...twenty-seven years ago?"
Richard answered instantly.
"At home."
Claire nodded.
"With whom?"
"My wife."
Eleanor froze.
Richard looked at her.
"You remember."
Every eye shifted toward Eleanor.
She searched her memory.
Twenty-seven years.
Too long.
Too many nights.
"I..."
She couldn't answer.
Richard smiled again.
"You see?"
"No one remembers an ordinary evening."
Claire quietly opened another folder.
"It wasn't ordinary."
She removed an old hotel invoice.
"Because at 7:42 p.m...."
She placed it on the piano.
"...your car entered the Grand Regency Hotel parking garage."
Richard's pupils contracted.
Very slightly.
Claire continued.
"The hotel's underground garage camera malfunctioned."
"So no footage survived."
"But..."
She raised the invoice.
"...the valet recorded every license plate by hand."
She turned the paper toward the guests.
One plate number.
ASH-001.
Richard's personal car.
He remained silent.
Claire smiled faintly.
"The hotel was only five minutes from George Ashford's office."
Adrian understood immediately.
His grandfather had arranged the secret meeting there.
Away from company headquarters.
Away from employees.
Away from witnesses.
Richard had followed him.
Victoria stepped backward again.
She looked at Richard.
"You told me..."
Her voice shook.
"...you told me there was never any evidence."
Richard didn't even look at her.
Instead...
He continued staring at Claire.
She noticed.
"So."
The detective asked quietly.
"Would you like to explain why your vehicle appeared near the meeting?"
Richard finally spoke.
"Very well."
Everyone leaned forward.
"I went there."
The admission exploded through the ballroom.
Eleanor stared in disbelief.
Victoria's eyes widened.
Even Adrian hadn't expected a confession.
Richard calmly straightened his jacket.
"Yes."
"I met my father that evening."
Claire's eyes narrowed.
"And?"
Richard smiled.
"We argued."
He looked directly at Adrian.
"Exactly as the recording proves."
A pause.
"Then..."
"I left."
Claire waited.
"And your father?"
"He was alive."
Richard spread his hands.
"You still have no proof that I killed him."
Another uncomfortable silence settled over the ballroom.
Richard was dangerous because he never denied small truths.
He admitted only what couldn't be disproved.
Then he challenged everyone to prove the rest.
Claire closed her folder.
"I agree."
Richard raised an eyebrow.
"You do?"
"Yes."
She looked toward Adrian.
"Right now..."
She paused deliberately.
"...we don't have enough evidence to arrest you for murder."
Several guests exhaled.
Richard smiled.
Then Claire finished her sentence.
"But..."
She reached into her briefcase one final time.
"...we have more than enough evidence to arrest someone else."
Every face turned toward the new evidence.
Richard frowned.
For the first time that day...
May you like
He genuinely had no idea whose name was about to be spoken.
