Chapter 2: Secrets Buried Beneath Love

Police officers arrived at the ballroom before midnight.

The orange juice was collected as evidence.

Hours later, the preliminary results confirmed everyone's worst fear.

The drink contained a powerful sedative mixed with medication that could trigger severe cardiac complications when combined with Ethan's prescription treatment.

The room spun around Ethan.

He turned toward Victoria.

"Why?" he asked, his voice breaking.

For the first time since the chaos began, Victoria stopped pretending.

Tears streamed down her face.

"It wasn't supposed to kill you," she whispered. "I just needed you unconscious."

The confession shocked everyone.

Victoria revealed that she had accumulated enormous gambling debts in secret. Months earlier, she had forged documents tied to Ethan's business accounts. If Ethan discovered the truth after the wedding, she would lose everything and face prison.

Her plan had been simple.

Drug Ethan.

Convince everyone he had collapsed from stress.

Gain access to financial authorizations while he recovered.

But greed had blinded her to the danger of the substances she used.

"I never meant for this to happen," she sobbed.

Ethan closed his eyes.

"You stopped loving me long before tonight," he said quietly. "You only loved what I could give you."

Victoria was taken away in handcuffs.

As flashing police lights reflected across the ballroom windows, Ethan looked toward Lily.

"You barely knew me," he said. "Why risk everything?"

Lily hesitated before answering.

"Because doing nothing would have haunted me forever."

For the first time that night, Ethan's eyes filled with gratitude instead of fear.
