Chapter 2: Nine Minutes Until Everything Changed Richard laughed louder after Arthur ended the call. Around him, Easter guests relaxed again. Some even smiled. To them, the old man in faded denim looked ridiculous standing beside an aging pickup truck with an outdated satellite phone. Richard held up the court documents. "You hear that?" he shouted to the guests. "He's threatening me with imaginary soldiers." Laughter spread through the garden. Only one person wasn't laughing. Richard's mother. She had noticed something everyone else had missed. Arthur never once raised his voice. His breathing never changed. His hands never shook. Men bluff to hide fear. Arthur looked like a man following a checklist. Meanwhile, Lily struggled to remain awake inside the truck. Arthur gently squeezed her hand. "Stay with me." She looked at him through swollen eyes. "I'm sorry, Dad." He smiled softly. "You have nothing to apologize for." Three minutes later... The distant sound of helicopter blades rolled across the valley. The Easter music stopped. Guests slowly looked toward the sky. Richard stopped smiling. / Chapter 3 / 4

Two judges.

Three contractors.

All arrested.

Federal warrants continued arriving throughout the night.

Richard stood in handcuffs outside the mansion he once believed untouchable.

He searched for Arthur.

Finally he whispered...

"You planned this."

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

"You did."
