Chapter 2: Learning How to Be a Father

Chapter 1: The Woman at the Revolving Door

"Alex."

The voice struck him harder than the accident that had changed his life.

He turned slowly.

Standing just inside the revolving doors was a woman holding the edge of the glass panel as if she needed it to remain upright. Her chestnut hair was shorter than he remembered, and there were silver threads near her temples that hadn't existed eight years ago.

But her eyes were unchanged.

Emily Carter.

The woman he had once loved enough to buy an engagement ring for.

The woman who had vanished without explanation.

The entire lobby disappeared around him.

Lucas and Noah released his legs and shouted in unison.

"Mama!"

They rushed toward her.

Emily knelt despite obvious exhaustion and wrapped her arms around both boys before looking up at Alex.

"I know how this looks," she said quietly.

Alex stared at her.

"No," he answered. "You don't."

He looked at the twins.

Then back at Emily.

"The doctors told me I couldn't have children."

"They told you it was extremely unlikely," Emily corrected gently.

"They told me enough."

She nodded.

"I know."

Margaret discreetly cleared the lobby while security escorted curious employees away. Within minutes, Alex, Emily, and the twins sat in a private conference room overlooking Manhattan.

For several moments, nobody spoke.

Finally, Emily slid a folder across the table.

"I never intended to keep them from you."

Alex didn't touch it.

"Then explain."

Tears gathered in her eyes.

"Eight years ago, when we broke up, I had already discovered I was pregnant."

Alex's expression froze.

"What?"

"I tried to tell you."

"You disappeared."

"You were building your company," she whispered. "You were under enormous pressure. Then your accident happened. I came to the hospital."

His head snapped upward.

"You what?"

Emily nodded.

"I heard the doctor tell your family you would probably never have biological children. You had just survived a traumatic crash. I convinced myself that showing up with an unexpected pregnancy would destroy the life you were trying to rebuild."

"You made that decision for me?"

"I was terrified."

Silence filled the room.

Lucas looked between them.

"Mama?"

Emily smiled weakly at the boys.

"It's okay."

Alex finally opened the folder.

Inside were hospital records.

Birth certificates.

Photos.

Seven years of first steps, birthday parties, school drawings, scraped knees, and missing teeth.

Seven years.

Gone.

He looked at the twins.

They stared back at him with absolute trust.

"Daddy," Noah asked softly, "are you mad at us?"

Alex's throat tightened.

He opened his arms.

"No," he whispered.

The boys climbed into his lap.

May you like

"Never at you."

For the first time in years, Alexander Sterling cried without trying to hide it.
