Chapter 2: Cracks Behind Closed Doors

Chapter 1: The Things He Never Saw

"What happened?" Michael asked, his voice trembling. "Why are you in here?"

Emily hesitated.

"You were busy," she finally said.

The words struck harder than any accusation.

Michael frowned. "Busy?"

"You were always on the phone," Emily replied. "Or working. Mom sleeps all day now. Oliver said he didn't want to make her upset."

Oliver peeked up at him.

"Mom gets angry when we make noise," he whispered.

Michael's heartbeat stumbled.

His wife, Claire, had struggled since losing her father months earlier. He had noticed the sadness. The exhaustion. The shorter temper.

But he had convinced himself that time would fix it.

He had convinced himself that because no one asked for help, none was needed.

Emily lowered her head.

"It started as a game," she said softly. "We pretended the doghouse was our secret fort."

She glanced around the tiny space.

"But sometimes... it felt safer here."

Michael's throat tightened.

Safer.

His children had chosen a wooden box in the backyard over the comfort of their own home.

He wrapped his arms around both of them.

"I'm so sorry," he whispered.

For the first time in years, business meetings, deadlines, and expectations disappeared into silence.

Only two truths remained.

His children were frightened.

And he had failed to notice.
