Chapter 3: A New Beginning

Chapter 3: A New Beginning
Months passed.
Leo's curls slowly began returning.
First soft waves.
Then little golden rings appeared around his ears once again.
Every morning, Daniel smiled while helping brush them into place.
"They're coming back," he whispered.
"So is Mom's promise."
Brenda wrote letters.
One after another.
Most went unanswered.
She attended family counseling on her own.
She apologized without asking to be forgiven.
She learned that regret wasn't something spoken once.
It had to be lived.
Nearly a year later, Leo asked a question while looking out the window.
"Can Grandma come watch my school play?"
Daniel and I exchanged a glance.
"Only if you want her there."
"I do," Leo said.
"But she can't touch my hair."
When Brenda arrived that evening, she stayed several feet away.
After the performance, Leo surprised everyone.
He walked over and gave her a small hug.
She cried quietly.
"I'll never make another promise for you," she whispered.
"But I'll spend the rest of my life keeping yours."
Leo smiled.
"My curls came back."
"Yeah," Brenda replied through tears.
"They did."
Daniel slipped Emily's letter back into the same plain envelope.
This time, it wasn't evidence.
It was a reminder.
Some promises survive loss.
Some survive grief.
May you like
And some are strong enough to grow back, one golden curl at a time.
The End.
