Chapter 2: A Debt Remembered
Chapter 1: The Cost of Standing Up
The silence in the ballroom stretched thin.
Vivian Whitmore recovered first.
Her expression twisted with disbelief before hardening into fury.
"You insignificant little girl," she hissed. "Do you understand what you've done?"
Grace's hands trembled at her sides.
"I stopped you from hurting someone."
Vivian laughed sharply.
"You just ended your career."
Marcus hurried across the room, pale with panic.
"Grace," he whispered urgently, "please... let me handle this."
But before he could continue, another voice cut through the crowd.
"No."
It wasn't loud.
It didn't need to be.
The single word carried enough authority to stop everyone in place.
People parted instinctively.
Dominic DeLuca walked toward them.
His black tuxedo fit him with effortless precision. His expression remained calm, yet something cold lingered beneath the surface.
Even Vivian's confidence faltered.
"Dominic," she said quickly, forcing a smile. "This is all a misunderstanding."
He ignored her.
Instead, he knelt beside Margaret.
"Mother," he asked softly, "did she touch you?"
Margaret hesitated.
Then she nodded.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop.
Dominic stood.
When he finally looked at Vivian, there was no anger in his face.
Only disappointment.
"You attempted to humiliate my mother," he said.
Vivian stammered.
"I didn't realize she was your—"
"You shouldn't need to know who she belongs to before treating her with dignity."
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Dominic turned toward his head of security.
"Escort Ms. Whitmore out."
Vivian's eyes widened.
"You can't do that!"
"I can."
"This gala depends on donors like me!"
Dominic's voice remained steady.
"Then perhaps it's time the gala learned to survive without them."
Security approached.
For the first time in years, Vivian Whitmore had no audience willing to save her.
As she was escorted from the ballroom, the room remained silent.
Then Margaret reached for Grace's hand.
"Thank you," she whispered.
Grace blinked rapidly.
"I only did what anyone should have done."
Margaret squeezed her fingers gently.
"My dear," she said, "that's exactly why it mattered."
May you like
But Grace noticed Dominic still watching her.
And somehow, that frightened her more than Vivian ever had.
