Chapter 13 - Adrian read the messages three times. His father's final recording echoed in his mind.

The person you trust most is the one who opened the gate.
Victor?
Malcolm?
Grace?
Someone else?
He left the hospital against medical advice.
He drove to the old Whitmore townhouse where Thomas had lived before building the Connecticut estate.
The house had been abandoned for years.
Inside, everything smelled like dust.
Adrian found his father's office.
The desk remained.
The books remained.
The safe remained.
He entered the code from memory.
Inside was a single envelope.
FOR ADRIAN.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Thomas's letter began:
If Evelyn ever takes control of the company, there is only one person I trust to stop her.
Daniel Cross.
Adrian stared.
The letter continued.
Daniel knows what I have done. He knows what Evelyn has done. And he knows the truth about Grace.
Adrian read faster.
Grace is my daughter. But Michael Miller is not her father. Daniel is.
He stopped.
Thomas had knowingly raised another man's child.
Why?
Because Daniel had been on the verge of exposing Evelyn.
Thomas believed Grace would become a target.
So he hid her.
But then another line appeared.
I did not ask Daniel to kill me. I asked him to disappear.
Adrian's stomach twisted.
His father had planned his own death?
No.
There was another paragraph.
Evelyn has discovered the truth. If she learns Grace is Daniel's daughter, she will use the child against him.
Thomas had arranged for Daniel to vanish.
But Evelyn had found out.
Adrian suddenly understood the entire chain.
His father died.
Daniel disappeared.
Grace was raised under another name.
Evelyn built a secret network.
Malcolm became her instrument.
And someone had manipulated Adrian for years.
But one question remained.
Why had Grace entered his house now?
His phone rang.
Grace.
Adrian answered.
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere safe.”
“Why did you lie to me?”
“I needed you to trust me.”
“You could have told me everything.”
“You wouldn't have believed me.”
“You don't know that.”
“I do.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Who was behind the attack on my house?”
“Daniel.”
“Why?”
“To force you to investigate.”
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It does.”
Grace's voice became quieter.
“Your father knew the only way you'd question your life was if everything you believed collapsed.”
Adrian leaned against the desk.
“So this was a test.”
“Yes.”
“Like the beggar test.”
Grace paused.
“Yes.”
Adrian felt betrayed.
“My mother wasn't the only one manipulating me.”
“No.”
“Daniel was.”
“Yes.”
“And you helped him.”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at the empty office.
“Then what am I supposed to believe?”
Grace whispered:
“The truth.”
“What truth?”
“That your company is not your father's legacy.”
Adrian looked up.
“What?”
“Your father built Whitmore Global as a front.”
“For what?”
Silence.
Grace answered:
“An organization that tracked powerful criminals.”
Adrian laughed.
“That's insane.”
“It sounds insane.”
“But it's true?”
“Yes.”
She told him about encrypted files.
International accounts.
Political blackmail.
Corporate espionage.
Thomas had built an intelligence network inside his business empire.
Not to get rich.
To expose people who were untouchable.
Adrian had inherited the organization without knowing it.
Malcolm had tried to steal it.
Evelyn had tried to weaponize it.
Daniel had tried to protect it.
And Grace had been recruited to uncover it.
Adrian sat down.
Twenty years of his life suddenly felt like a carefully designed maze.
Then Grace said:
“One more thing.”
“What?”
“Your mother wasn't afraid of the company.”
“Then what was she afraid of?”
Grace hesitated.
“You.”
Adrian frowned.
“Me?”
“Your father left something for you.”
“What?”
“A key.”
“To what?”
“A vault.”
Adrian stood.
“Where?”
Grace gave him an address.
A remote bank in New York.
“The vault opens tonight.”
Adrian drove there.
The bank was nearly empty.
The manager brought him downstairs.
At the end of a narrow corridor stood a steel vault.
Adrian inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
Inside was a single black box.
He opened it.
A photograph lay on top.
It showed Thomas.
Daniel.
Evelyn.
And a fourth person.
Adrian stared.
He recognized the face immediately.
It belonged to the current governor of Connecticut.
Alive.
Powerful.
Untouchable.
On the back of the photograph, Thomas had written:
THIS IS THE MAN WHO ORDERED MY DEATH.
Adrian slowly looked up.
Then his phone rang.
The voice on the line was calm.
Powerful.
Familiar.
“Adrian.”
He froze.
May you like
It was the governor.
“I know you're holding the box.”
