Chapter 11 - Adrian looked up.Evelyn stood on the lighthouse stairs.

She was holding a folder.

No weapon.

No fear.

Grace moved beside Adrian.

“How?”

Evelyn smiled.

“You always think you're the smartest person in the room.”

Adrian aimed his gun.

“You kidnapped Grace.”

“Yes.”

“You killed Samuel.”

“No.”

“You ordered Victor to kill him.”

“No.”

Evelyn looked toward Grace.

“Malcolm did.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Then why are you here?”

Evelyn held up the folder.

“Because this is the only thing you actually care about.”

She dropped it.

Adrian opened it.

Inside was the original company trust.

And a letter from Thomas.

His father's final instructions.

Adrian read them.

His father's entire controlling interest in Whitmore Global had been placed into a secret trust.

The beneficiary was not Adrian.

Not Evelyn.

Not Malcolm.

It was Grace.

Adrian stared.

“Thomas left everything to her.”

Evelyn nodded.

“He believed you were too much like me.”

Grace's voice broke.

“I never wanted the company.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“That was always your weakness.”

Adrian looked at his mother.

“You destroyed my father's will.”

“No.”

“I found proof.”

“I destroyed the public version.”

She smiled.

“But Thomas's private trust was hidden.”

Adrian stared.

“Why did you keep Grace alive?”

Evelyn's expression changed.

“Because I needed a contingency.”

Adrian understood.

“If I died, she inherited.”

“Yes.”

“So you needed her alive.”

“Exactly.”

Grace looked at her mother.

“You never loved me.”

Evelyn was silent.

Then she said:

“I loved what you represented.”

Grace stepped backward.

“You're sick.”

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

“You think this is about money.”

“It isn't?”

“No.”

She pointed toward the folder.

“This is about power.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“You've spent your entire life controlling everyone.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Evelyn's smile faded.

“Because when I was young, I learned what happens when you have none.”

She revealed something Adrian had never heard.

Evelyn had grown up in poverty.

Her father had died young.

Her mother had worked for wealthy families.

Evelyn had spent years being ignored.

She had sworn never to be powerless again.

Thomas had offered her love.

But she had chosen control.

And eventually control became an obsession.

Adrian lowered his gun slightly.

“You could have stopped.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“I couldn't.”

Then she looked at Grace.

“She was the one thing I couldn't control.”

Suddenly, Malcolm's voice came from below.

“You still can't.”

He emerged from the doorway.

Blood covered one side of his shirt.

Evelyn turned.

“Malcolm.”

He raised his gun.

Adrian stepped between them.

Malcolm smiled.

“You never learned.”

“Learned what?”

“That every empire collapses from inside.”

He fired.

The bullet struck the wall.

Grace pulled Adrian aside.

Another shot.

Glass shattered.

They ran toward the lighthouse's upper level.

Malcolm followed.

At the top was nowhere left to run.

The ocean stretched below.

A violent storm had begun.

Malcolm reached the final platform.

“It's over.”

Adrian looked at him.

“For you.”

Malcolm laughed.

Then he pulled out a detonator.

Adrian's eyes widened.

“What is that?”

“The end of Whitmore House.”

He pressed the button.

Far in the distance, an explosion shook the night.

Adrian's phone began ringing.

The mansion.

The hidden archives.

The evidence.

Everything was burning.

Malcolm smiled.

“Now nobody can prove anything.”

Then Grace stepped forward.

“You forgot something.”

Malcolm looked at her.

She held up the small recorder.

His smile disappeared.

“The entire conversation,” she said.

Malcolm's face changed.

“Give me that.”

“No.”

He raised his gun.

Adrian moved between them.

May you like

Malcolm fired.

And this time, the bullet hit Adrian.
