Chapter 9 - The Woman They BlamedFor the next twenty-four hours, I became the most hated woman in America.

News channels displayed my photograph.
Commentators called me a conspirator.
A traitor.
A terrorist.
Someone even released falsified documents claiming I had helped design BLACK HARBOR.
People believed it.
Because lies traveled faster than truth.
Commander Grant tried to move me to a secure facility.
We never reached it.
Our convoy was attacked.
Two vehicles blocked the road.
Gunfire shattered the windows.
Security returned fire.
We escaped through a service road.
That was when I understood.
This wasn't about destroying evidence anymore.
They wanted me dead.
But there was something strange.
They weren't targeting Commander Grant.
They were targeting me.
Only me.
That meant someone still believed I possessed something they needed.
The ring.
The evidence.
Or something else.
We moved to a safe location.
There, investigators discovered an encrypted message hidden inside my father's archive.
It contained one sentence.
OLIVIA IS NOT THE KEY. SHE IS THE WITNESS.
I stared at it.
“What does that mean?”
Commander Grant looked at the file.
“It means your father expected this.”
“What did he know?”
“That someone would eventually use you as a scapegoat.”
Then we found a second message.
THE REAL KEY IS DANIEL CARTER.
I felt sick.
Daniel?
He was still in custody.
We brought him in.
When he saw the message, his face collapsed.
“My father told me something before he died.”
“What?”
“He said I would eventually have to choose between my family and Olivia.”
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
“He knew the program would use me.”
“And you helped them.”
“I was afraid.”
“So was I.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
Daniel looked at Commander Grant.
“There is a server.”
“Where?”
“In our old family property.”
“What server?”
“My father kept records there.”
“Why didn't you tell us?”
“Because I didn't know whether anyone was watching.”
Grant stepped closer.
“Take us there.”
The property was empty.
Dust covered everything.
But beneath the garage was a hidden elevator.
It led underground.
Inside was a server room.
Thousands of terabytes.
Black Harbor's original archive.
Payment records.
Names.
Orders.
And something else.
A live connection.
Someone was connected to the server.
We traced it.
Crown Meridian headquarters.
The evidence was undeniable.
But there was one final obstacle.
A kill switch.
If investigators attempted to copy the archive, the system would erase everything.
The only person who knew how to disable it was Elena.
My mother was dead.
At least, that's what we believed.
Then Daniel said:
“She isn't dead.”
I turned.
“What?”
“She told me once that if they ever found her, she would make them believe she died.”
My heart stopped.
“You mean...”
A monitor suddenly activated.
My mother's face appeared.
Alive.
“This is a delayed recording,” she said.
“I knew they would come for the archive.”
She looked directly at me.
“Olivia, there is one thing I never told you.”
The screen flickered.
“You were not born naturally.”
I froze.
“What?”
“You were part of the earliest stage of the program.”
My chest tightened.
“I don't understand.”
She continued.
“Your father and I volunteered.”
“For what?”
“To test whether behavioral vulnerability could be predicted before birth.”
The room went silent.
“They monitored you your entire life.”
My hands shook.
“They were trying to prove they could predict who you would become.”
“And?”
My mother's eyes filled with tears.
“They failed.”
I stared at the screen.
“Why?”
“Because you became something they couldn't predict.”
“What?”
She smiled sadly.
“You became compassionate.”
The message ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the server alarm activated.
A countdown appeared.
Five minutes.
The kill switch had begun.
Daniel grabbed my hand.
“We have to go.”
“No.”
I looked at the screen.
Then at the evidence.
“They've spent my entire life controlling the story.”
My voice steadied.
“I want to tell the truth myself.”
We disabled the kill switch.
Every file was copied.
Every recording.
Every payment.
Every name.
Then we released it.
Live.
Across the world.
The story became undeniable.
Crown Meridian executives were arrested.
Federal investigations began.
Military officials resigned.
BLACK HARBOR collapsed.
But one file remained.
A file my father had hidden separately.
It contained only one sentence.
THE PROGRAM WAS NEVER THE TRUE OPERATION.
