Chapter 5 - The Ghost EmployeeNobody could find Elena Vale.

Not in payroll.

Not in military databases.

Not in medical records.

Not in contractor registries.

It was as if she had been designed rather than hired.

But someone had given her extraordinary access.

She could enter secure systems.

Review medical records.

Access personnel files.

Override surveillance.

And now, somehow, she had been watching me.

The investigators discovered something else.

Elena had appeared in the system six years earlier.

The exact month Daniel and I got married.

That detail made my stomach twist.

Six years.

Six years of surveillance.

Six years of hidden records.

Six years of someone quietly building a file on my life.

Then investigators discovered my father's name in the archive.

I hadn't seen it there in years.

My father had died when I was sixteen.

I stared at the screen.

Why would a secret military database contain information about him?

Commander Grant didn't answer immediately.

“Olivia, we need to ask you something.”

“What?”

“Did your father ever work for the Department of Defense?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Did he ever work in intelligence?”

“No.”

“Do you remember him having access to classified material?”

“No.”

They exchanged looks.

“Then why is his name here?”

That question became the center of everything.

Investigators retrieved an old photograph from BLACK HARBOR.

It showed my father standing beside three men.

One was unidentified.

The second was a younger Captain Reynolds.

The third...

I recognized him.

Daniel's father.

My father-in-law.

He had supposedly died nine years before I met Daniel.

I stared at the photograph.

“This can't be right.”

Commander Grant nodded slowly.

“That's what we thought.”

They investigated.

Daniel's father hadn't died nine years ago.

He had died seven years ago.

And his death certificate had been modified.

The original cause of death was classified.

The altered version listed natural causes.

Suddenly my marriage looked different.

Daniel hadn't entered my life by accident.

Or at least, investigators could no longer prove that he had.

The following morning, Daniel was brought in.

I asked him one question.

“Did you marry me because of my family?”

He looked at me.

For a long time, he said nothing.

Then:

“At first.”

My chest tightened.

“At first?”

“I was told to get close to you.”

The words were almost too quiet to hear.

“For what?”

“To find out what your father left behind.”

I stepped backward.

“My father left nothing.”

Daniel shook his head.

“He left something.”

“What?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why did you stay?”

“Because I fell in love with you.”

I stared at him.

“You abused me.”

“I know.”

“You threatened me.”

“I know.”

“You broke into my home.”

“I know.”

“And you expect me to believe you loved me?”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“I did.”

I turned away.

I didn't know which part disgusted me more.

The lie.

Or the possibility that some part of his feelings had actually been real.

Then he said something that stopped me.

“Olivia, your father didn't die because he was sick.”

I turned back.

“How did he die?”

“He was killed.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“Who killed him?”

Daniel looked toward the security camera.

Then whispered:

“Elena.”

“Who is Elena?”

He looked directly at me.

“She isn't a person.”

My skin prickled.

“What does that mean?”

“It's a position.”

I didn't understand.

Daniel continued.

“Every few years, someone becomes Elena Vale.”

A title.

Not a name.

A role passed from one person to another.

A director who controlled the program.

And according to Daniel, that program had existed for decades.

Then the door opened.

Commander Grant entered.

“We found her.”

I looked at him.

“Elena?”

“Yes.”

My heart pounded.

“Who is she?”

Grant placed a photograph on the table.

A woman.

Older.

Dark hair.

Cold expression.

I stared at her.

I had seen that face before.

Not in a database.

Not in a photograph.

In person.

At my father's funeral.

I remembered her standing alone near the cemetery gate.

I had never known her name.

Commander Grant said:

“She isn't Elena Vale.”

He turned the photograph around.

“She is Dr. Evelyn Carter.”

My mother's name.

My breath disappeared.

“My mother?”

May you like

Grant nodded.

“And she's alive.”
