Chapter 8 - The Boy in the DarknessThe Heir Nobody Was Allowed to Know

We opened the steel door.
The chamber beyond was smaller than I expected.
A narrow bed.
A sink.
A vent.
No windows.
And a teenage boy pressed against the far wall.
He was thin.
Pale.
His hair was longer than the photograph.
But the moment he lifted his face, I knew.
Daniel.
He stared at me.
I stared at him.
Neither of us spoke.
Then he whispered,
“You're Duca.”
“Yes.”
He swallowed.
“I've seen you.”
“Where?”
“At the foundation.”
The pieces fell into place.
He had been there.
Under another name.
Under another life.
Under my protection.
I simply hadn't known.
Daniel looked toward Elena.
“Is she alive?”
“Yes.”
He closed his eyes.
A tear slipped down his cheek.
Twenty-three years of secrets.
One room.
One family.
And a boy who had spent part of his childhood hiding beneath the house of the man who unknowingly paid for his education.
I stepped closer.
“Who put you here?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Adrian.”
“Why?”
“He found me three months ago.”
“How?”
“I don't know.”
“Where were you before?”
“A boarding school.”
“You were kidnapped?”
Daniel nodded.
“But why bring you here?”
His eyes shifted toward the wall.
“Because he wanted something.”
“What?”
“Your signature.”
“For what?”
“The trust.”
I felt anger rise.
“Adrian can't access it without me?”
“No.”
Daniel looked directly at me.
“Only you can authorize the transfer.”
“And he kept you here to force me.”
“Yes.”
Then Daniel said something that changed everything.
“He told me you were going to die.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“He said you would be killed and the entire thing would be blamed on Grace.”
Grace froze.
“Me?”
Daniel nodded.
“He showed me documents.”
“What documents?”
“Photographs. Medical records. Messages.”
He reached beneath his bed.
Pulled out a plastic folder.
Inside were dozens of printed pages.
Messages between Vincent and Adrian.
Plans.
Schedules.
Payments.
And one page with my name at the top.
PROJECT HOLLOW.
Underneath:
STEP ONE: ISOLATE DUCA.
STEP TWO: REMOVE GRACE HARPER.
STEP THREE: STAGE ACCIDENT.
STEP FOUR: TRANSFER CONTROL.
Grace started shaking.
“They were going to kill you.”
I looked at Daniel.
“What about Mia?”
He looked away.
“They mentioned her.”
My jaw tightened.
“What did they say?”
“That the child is dangerous.”
“Why?”
“Because she knows how to open the wall.”
Mia frowned.
“I don't know how.”
Daniel gave her a sad smile.
“You did.”
“How?”
“You were the only one who listened.”
I looked at the child.
“What did you hear?”
Mia touched the wooden car.
“The knocks.”
Daniel nodded.
“They weren't knocks.”
“What were they?”
“A code.”
I knelt beside her.
“What code?”
Daniel pointed toward the wall.
“Someone was trying to communicate.”
“Who?”
He shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Then a sound came from above.
Three knocks.
Daniel froze.
His face drained of color.
“They found us.”
Caleb stepped forward.
“Who?”
Daniel whispered,
“Vincent.”
The lights went out.
A gunshot echoed above us.
Elena screamed.
Grace grabbed Mia.
I pulled Daniel behind me.
Then another sound came from the ceiling.
Footsteps.
Heavy.
Moving directly toward us.
Caleb looked at me.
“We have to go.”
“Where?”
“The service tunnel.”
We ran.
The passage twisted beneath the house.
Behind us, metal doors slammed open.
Someone shouted.
“DUCA!”
Vincent.
We ran faster.
Then a beam of light appeared ahead.
An exit.
We pushed through a hidden door.
We emerged into a neighboring alley.
Cold rain hit my face.
We had escaped.
But Daniel stopped.
He stared at the house.
“Mr. Duca.”
“What?”
“There's one thing you don't know.”
“What?”
His eyes filled with fear.
“Adrian wasn't the one who ordered this.”
I stared at him.
“Then who did?”
May you like
Daniel looked back at the house.
“The person giving him orders is still inside.”
