Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the WallThe Dead Man Who Wasn't Dead

We did not answer the front door.

Instead, I went downstairs with Grace behind me and Mia carrying Lily.

The doorbell rang once.

Then again.

No one spoke.

I checked the exterior camera.

Still dead.

I moved to the side window.

A black sedan sat at the curb.

No headlights.

No driver visible.

The third knock came.

Mia whispered,

“My daddy always knocked like that.”

Grace shook her head violently.

“No.”

But Mia insisted.

“Three knocks.”

“That's impossible,” Grace said.

Then the front door unlocked itself.

I stared at the handle.

Someone had opened the electronic lock remotely.

I stepped back.

“Get behind me.”

The door opened six inches.

Nobody stood outside.

Cold air moved through the foyer.

Then something slid across the floor.

A folded piece of paper.

I picked it up.

COME TO THE LIBRARY.

ALONE.

I looked at Grace.

“No.”

She understood.

Whoever had sent it wanted me separated from them.

Instead, we returned upstairs.

The library door was open.

The hidden passage stood exposed.

I entered first.

A light was on in the room beyond.

Someone was sitting on the mattress.

A man.

Thin.

Bearded.

One arm wrapped around his ribs.

He stared at me.

For several seconds, I couldn't recognize him.

Then Grace screamed.

“Caleb!”

The man looked at her.

He was alive.

Mia dropped Lily's blanket.

“Daddy?”

Caleb stood.

He barely had the strength.

Mia ran to him.

He fell to his knees and held her.

Grace stood frozen.

Her hand covered her mouth.

I stared at the man I'd been told was dead for nearly two years.

“How?”

Caleb looked at me.

“Because your brother wanted everyone to think I was.”

“You were alive this whole time?”

“Not by choice.”

He coughed.

“I was held here.”

“By Adrian?”

Caleb nodded.

“Adrian and Vincent.”

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Why?”

“Because I found something.”

“The ledger.”

“The ledger was only the beginning.”

He reached beneath the mattress.

Pulled out a small metal key.

And handed it to me.

“What does this open?”

“The wall.”

I frowned.

“Which wall?”

“The library wall.”

“We already opened it.”

Caleb shook his head.

“Not the passage.”

He looked directly at me.

“The real wall.”

He pointed at the bricks.

“Your father built a second chamber behind it.”

I walked closer.

“Why?”

“He knew one day someone would come looking.”

“For what?”

Caleb's eyes hardened.

“The truth.”

He handed me another folded paper.

I opened it.

It contained a list of names.

People.

Payments.

Dates.

One name appeared repeatedly.

ADRIAN DUCA.

Another.

VINCENT HALE.

And beneath them was a third.

HARRIET DUCA.

My mother.

I stared.

“My mother?”

Caleb nodded.

“She wasn't protecting Adrian.”

“What do you mean?”

“She was trying to stop him.”

My heart hammered.

“My mother died believing Adrian was innocent.”

“No.”

Caleb's voice was quiet.

“She died because she found out he wasn't.”

I turned toward him.

“You're saying my mother knew?”

“She knew everything.”

“Then why didn't she tell me?”

“Because your father threatened to take you away.”

I felt the floor tilt beneath me.

“My father?”

Caleb nodded.

“The family has been lying to you since you were sixteen.”

I looked at Mia.

At Grace.

At the hidden chamber.

Everything I believed about my childhood suddenly felt unstable.

Then Caleb spoke again.

“There is one thing you need to understand.”

“What?”

“Adrian isn't trying to steal your company.”

“Then what does he want?”

Caleb stared at the photograph I'd found.

“The boy in that picture.”

I pulled it out.

Caleb went pale.

“You found it.”

“Who is he?”

Caleb looked at me.

“He's not your brother.”

“I know.”

“He's your brother's son.”

I frowned.

“I don't have a nephew.”

Caleb shook his head.

“You do.”

The room went silent.

Then he whispered,

“His name is Daniel.”

I looked at the photograph again.

The boy's eyes.

My eyes.

My brother's face.

And beneath the image, in faded ink, were five words.

DANIEL DUCA, HEIR BY BLOOD.

Before I could speak, every light in the hidden corridor came on at once.

A voice echoed from the passage.

“Very good.”

May you like

Vincent stepped into view.

He was holding a gun.
