Chapter 14 - The Last DoorI went to the mansion with empty hands.

No trust papers.
No money.
No weapon.
Only a recording device hidden beneath my sleeve.
Evelyn and Daniel waited outside.
Mr. Vale remained in the car with the legal team.
The front doors opened.
Beatrice stood inside.
The mansion looked exactly as I remembered.
Except the portraits had been removed.
The chandeliers were dark.
The house smelled like smoke.
“Where is Vanessa?”
“Upstairs.”
I followed.
Every step felt like walking through a graveyard.
We entered Terrence's study.
Vanessa was tied to a chair.
Alive.
Beaten.
She looked at me.
“Elise…”
“Are you hurt?”
She began crying.
“I didn't mean for this to happen.”
Beatrice slapped her.
“Enough.”
I looked at my mother-in-law.
“You killed your son.”
She stared at me.
“No.”
“You gave him the drug.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he betrayed his family.”
“He refused to help you steal.”
“He chose you.”
Her voice cracked.
“He chose some nobody instead of his mother.”
I said nothing.
Beatrice stepped toward me.
“You had no idea what Terrence was protecting.”
“I know now.”
“No.”
She smiled.
“You know about money.”
Then the study door opened.
Julian Cross entered.
Gray suit.
Silver hair.
Cold eyes.
He looked at me.
“Mrs. Caldwell.”
“So you're Julian.”
He nodded.
“You're holding something that belongs to me.”
“The inheritance?”
“The network.”
I laughed.
“You murdered a man for a company.”
“For an empire.”
Vanessa suddenly screamed.
“You told me you wouldn't kill him!”
Julian turned.
“Vanessa.”
“You said the medicine would make him sick, not kill him!”
Beatrice stared at her daughter.
“You idiot.”
I smiled.
The recording device was still running.
Julian noticed.
Too late.
Daniel kicked the door open.
Police followed.
Mr. Vale entered behind them.
Julian reached for his weapon.
Gunshots echoed through the mansion.
Glass shattered.
Vanessa screamed.
Beatrice dropped to her knees.
Julian ran toward the hidden staircase.
I followed.
We reached the basement.
He opened a steel door.
Inside was the original trust archive.
Documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Everything.
Julian reached for a metal case.
I stepped in front of him.
“You wanted this?”
He raised the gun.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
He smiled.
“Your husband chose the wrong woman.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I looked at the case.
“He chose the only woman you couldn't buy.”
Sirens filled the mansion.
Julian hesitated.
That was all the police needed.
They took him down.
Beatrice was arrested.
Vanessa gave a statement.
And for the first time in years, the Caldwell mansion was silent.
I thought it was over.
Then Mr. Vale opened the final document.
His face went pale.
“Elise.”
“What?”
“This was never the final trust.”
He turned the page.
At the bottom was Terrence's signature.
And beneath it:
SECOND BENEFICIARY: UNKNOWN
I stared.
“Who?”
May you like
Mr. Vale whispered:
“We need to find out before the markets open.”
