Chapter 11 - Five Hundred Million DollarsThe next morning, I did something Beatrice never expected.

I went shopping.
Not for clothes.
For control.
I purchased a security team.
A private office.
A communications department.
And three lawyers.
Not because I wanted luxury.
Because I had finally stopped thinking like a grieving widow.
I started thinking like the owner of an empire.
Mr. Vale showed me the full trust.
Five hundred million in liquid assets.
More than forty percent of Caldwell Holdings.
Control over multiple investment vehicles.
Property across four states.
A private aviation company.
And a charitable foundation.
I stared at the numbers.
“You're telling me I could have bought this mansion ten times over.”
“Technically.”
I laughed.
“Beatrice threw me out.”
“Technically, she threw out the woman she believed you were.”
That sentence stayed with me.
I moved into a secure penthouse.
The first thing I did was call the Caldwell staff.
Not everyone.
Only the ones Beatrice had intimidated.
Mrs. Dalton came.
Two chefs.
The driver.
An accountant.
Three housekeepers.
I asked one question.
“Who was loyal to Terrence?”
Every hand went up.
My chest tightened.
They had been afraid.
I hadn't known.
One of the housekeepers, Lena, approached me afterward.
“There is something you should see.”
She gave me a memory card.
“What is it?”
“Security footage from the night Terrence collapsed.”
My hands went cold.
The footage showed the mansion kitchen.
11:48 p.m.
Beatrice entered.
11:51.
Vanessa entered.
11:57.
Harrington entered.
12:02.
Then Terrence.
He looked healthy.
He was carrying a glass.
Beatrice approached him.
They spoke.
She touched his shoulder.
Then she handed him something.
A small white packet.
Terrence looked at it.
Shook his head.
Beatrice smiled.
He took it.
Seven minutes later, he collapsed.
I couldn't breathe.
The evidence was enough.
But then Lena pointed.
“Wait.”
She zoomed in on the hallway.
A second person stood behind the doorway.
A woman.
I recognized her.
The same woman Grace had said sounded like me on the phone.
My blood froze.
“It can't be.”
Lena whispered:
“That's your mother.”
I stared at the screen.
My mother had been dead for eight years.
I looked at Lena.
“That woman is not my mother.”
“Then who is she?”
I didn't know.
Daniel arrived twenty minutes later.
He watched the footage.
Then his face changed.
“Elise.”
“What?”
“I've seen her before.”
“Who is she?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Your mother had a twin sister.”
I blinked.
“I was never told that.”
“Because she disappeared twenty-seven years ago.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked at the timestamp.
“Because she was involved in the original theft from the Caldwell trust.”
My heart sank.
The woman wasn't Beatrice's accomplice.
May you like
She was part of something far older.
And apparently, she was back.
