Chapter 15 - Evelyn Mercer looked nothing like the frightened doctor we had trusted. She stood beneath the emergency lights with a pistol pointed toward my chest.

Adrian moved in front of me.

“Evelyn.”

She shook her head.

“Don't.”

“You betrayed us.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I made the first mistake.”

Peter stared at her.

“You're lying.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You always thought you were smarter than everyone.”

Peter's face hardened.

“You told Vittorio where Eleanor was hiding.”

“Yes.”

“You sold Samuel.”

“Yes.”

“You helped Delacroix erase Alexander.”

Evelyn lowered her gun.

“Yes.”

Adrian stared.

“Why?”

She looked at him.

“Because your grandfather forced me.”

“He was dead.”

“He threatened my children.”

I frowned.

“You had children?”

Evelyn nodded.

“They disappeared in 1999.”

I understood.

The cellar.

The boy.

The storm.

Everything connected to that year.

Evelyn took a breath.

“Your grandfather built Delacroix to control the river.”

“Vittorio inherited it.”

“Then Eleanor tried to destroy it.”

“And Alexander?”

“He was chosen as leverage.”

Adrian looked at his brother.

Alexander said nothing.

Evelyn continued.

“Samuel discovered the truth.”

“So he became an enemy.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“I helped him disappear.”

My chest tightened.

“But Vittorio found him.”

“And killed him.”

I closed my eyes.

Then opened them.

“Why did Dad send me to Adrian?”

Evelyn's voice softened.

“Because Adrian was the only person Vittorio feared.”

I looked at Adrian.

“Why?”

“Because your brother was the first person to reject the system.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“I wasn't the only one.”

He looked at me.

“Neither are you.”

I opened the USB.

The final folder waited.

VITTORIO.

I clicked.

A single document appeared.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

The entire Delacroix network.

Names.

Accounts.

Judges.

Police commanders.

Business leaders.

Political donors.

Blackmail files.

Everything.

But one folder remained.

COUNCIL.

Inside were seven names.

I recognized six.

The seventh was blank.

Adrian stared.

“Who is missing?”

Evelyn whispered:

“You.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“The seventh council seat belongs to the bloodline.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So they want me to become one of them?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“They want you dead before you can choose.”

A gunshot shattered the window.

Evelyn fell.

Adrian dragged me down.

Alexander returned fire.

Peter disappeared.

Luca slammed the steel door.

The screen flickered.

Vittorio appeared one final time.

“Choose carefully, Clara.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“Your mother wants to destroy Delacroix.”

“Your brother wants to control it.”

“Adrian wants to kill me.”

“And you?”

The screen went black.

A final message appeared.

YOU CONTROL THE EIGHTH KEY.

Then:

YOU DECIDE WHO LIVES.

Adrian turned to me.

“Don't listen to him.”

Eleanor's voice came through the hidden speaker.

“Clara.”

I looked up.

Her face appeared on the screen.

She was still trapped.

“Your father trusted you.”

I pressed my hand against the glass monitor.

“Mom.”

She whispered:

“Don't become them.”

The screen went black.

Outside, dozens of vehicles approached.

The council had arrived.

Adrian checked his weapon.

Alexander did the same.

Luca locked the final door.

Evelyn, wounded but alive, whispered:

“They're coming for you.”

I looked down at the USB.

The power to expose them was inside my hand.

The power to destroy the Moretti empire was inside my hand.

And the power to save Eleanor was inside my hand.

Adrian stood beside me.

“We do this together.”

I looked at him.

For the first time, he didn't look like the feared man of New Orleans.

He looked like the little boy who had once hated thunderstorms.

A man who had spent seventeen years living inside a lie.

I closed my fist around the drive.

Then I heard footsteps outside.

One.

Two.

Three.

Someone stopped at the door.

A voice came through.

“Clara Vaughn.”

I froze.

The voice sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

The door opened slowly.

A man stepped inside.

My father.

Samuel Vaughn.

Alive.

Standing beside Vittorio Moretti.

Adrian raised his gun.

I couldn't move.

Samuel looked at me.

His eyes were full of tears.

“I'm sorry, Clara.”

Vittorio smiled.

Then Samuel said the words that broke everything we thought we knew.

“I was never protecting you from Vittorio.”

He pointed at the USB in my hand.

“I was protecting Vittorio from you.”

And behind them, Eleanor screamed.

“RUN!”

The lights went out.

May you like

A gunshot exploded in the darkness.

And when the emergency lights returned, Adrian Moretti was gone.
