Chapter 14 - I stopped hearing everything.My father's face.

Vittorio's face.

Two men standing together.

Yesterday.

Peter let the photograph fall.

I picked it up.

“Explain.”

He looked at Adrian.

“This is the secret Eleanor spent seventeen years protecting.”

Adrian's voice was cold.

“Clara's father is Samuel.”

“Legally.”

Peter smiled.

“But biologically?”

He shook his head.

“That's a different story.”

I stared at Eleanor.

She couldn't meet my eyes.

“Mom?”

She flinched.

That single reaction was enough.

I turned toward her.

“Who is my father?”

Silence.

Then Eleanor whispered:

“Vittorio.”

The room disappeared beneath my feet.

Adrian stared at me.

“No.”

Peter continued.

“Samuel adopted Clara to protect her.”

I couldn't breathe.

“Why?”

“Because Vittorio knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That his daughter would become the eighth key.”

I looked at my necklace.

“The network recognizes blood.”

Peter nodded.

“Only a child of the original line can override it.”

Adrian stepped away.

“So Clara is…”

“Your sister.”

The word landed like a gunshot.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“I wanted to protect you both.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You hid my sister.”

“Yes.”

“For seventeen years.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe Samuel was a stranger.”

“Yes.”

Peter laughed softly.

“And now everyone wants her.”

I turned toward him.

“Who killed Samuel?”

Peter's expression changed.

“Vittorio.”

I stared.

“He sacrificed him.”

“For what?”

“To make Clara inherit the key.”

The puzzle finally aligned.

Samuel had staged his death.

But someone had caught him.

Vittorio had used his death to trigger the succession.

Then the USB had been designed to lead me to Adrian.

Not to expose Delacroix.

To activate it.

Luca stepped forward.

“I work for Vittorio.”

Adrian raised his gun.

“You said you protected me.”

“I did.”

“From what?”

“From him.”

Luca pointed toward a hidden screen.

It turned on.

Vittorio appeared.

He looked older.

Much older.

But his eyes were sharp.

“My children.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because death is only useful if people believe it.”

Vittorio looked at Clara.

“My daughter.”

I felt sick.

“I am not your daughter.”

He smiled.

“You are.”

“I hate you.”

“You should.”

Adrian raised his gun toward the screen.

Vittorio laughed.

“You can't shoot a screen.”

“Tell me where you are.”

“I'll show you.”

A map appeared.

A private island off the Louisiana coast.

Vittorio's final message played.

“Come alone.”

Adrian stared.

“Why would I?”

“Because your mother is already here.”

Eleanor gasped.

“No.”

The screen changed.

Eleanor appeared.

Locked inside a glass room.

Adrian's fists clenched.

“Mom!”

Vittorio continued.

“Bring Clara.”

Adrian looked at me.

Peter interrupted.

“And bring the original drive.”

I held it tighter.

“Why?”

“Because the final folder hasn't opened.”

“What folder?”

Peter smiled.

“The one nobody told you existed.”

The USB screen changed.

Eight folders appeared.

The final one had been hidden.

VITTORIO.

I clicked it.

A single file appeared.

No video.

No document.

Only a sentence.

THE FIRST BETRAYAL WAS NOT VITTORIO'S.

I looked at Eleanor.

She was crying.

Adrian whispered:

“Then whose was it?”

The file opened.

A name appeared.

EVELYN MERCER.

The room went silent.

Then every light shut off.

A woman's voice whispered behind us.

“You finally found me.”

May you like

Evelyn stepped from the darkness.

Holding a gun.
