Chapter 15 - The chamber remained dark.Nobody moved.

Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
The sound grew closer.
Dominic turned toward the doorway.
A figure stepped into the dim emergency light.
An elderly woman.
White hair.
Black dress.
Silver cane.
Dominic had never seen her before.
But Elliot Vale had.
He looked terrified.
“Mother.”
The woman smiled.
“Hello, Elliot.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
Julian stared.
Daniel lowered his head.
Clare pulled Ellie behind her.
Dominic looked from one face to another.
“What is happening?”
The woman walked toward the center of the chamber.
“I am Eleanor Vale.”
Dominic's heart stopped.
His grandmother.
The official records said she had died when his father was a teenager.
Another death.
Another lie.
She looked at Dominic.
“You look like your grandfather.”
Dominic couldn't speak.
She touched the old vault.
“Your father spent twenty years convincing everyone he controlled this family.”
She looked at Elliot.
“He never did.”
Elliot's face twisted.
“You were supposed to be dead.”
“So were you.”
She smiled.
“That seems to run in this family.”
Adrian almost laughed.
Eleanor looked at all three brothers.
“Your father was afraid.”
“Of what?” Dominic asked.
“Of the truth.”
She pointed toward the wall.
A screen illuminated.
Images appeared.
The old organization.
The original council.
The first Vale estate.
Then a list.
Every generation.
Every succession.
Every betrayal.
And beneath all of it was the original purpose of the family trust.
Protection.
Not power.
The trust had been created to keep the organization from being controlled by a single heir.
Dominic stared.
“So why did my father change it?”
“He didn't.”
Elliot looked down.
Eleanor continued.
“Someone changed it after his death.”
Dominic turned.
“Who?”
She looked at Arthur.
Arthur lowered his head.
Then at Mercer.
Mercer began trembling.
Then at Clare.
Clare looked confused.
Eleanor finally looked at Adrian.
“You know.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“I know.”
Dominic turned toward him.
“Tell me.”
Adrian whispered:
“The trust was altered by Daniel.”
Daniel went pale.
Clare stared at him.
“You?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not the way you think.”
Adrian continued.
“Daniel changed one clause.”
“Which one?”
“That any child born outside the Vale bloodline could inherit the estate if the family heir became permanently incapacitated.”
Dominic looked at Ellie.
Everything clicked.
“The clause wasn't for Ellie.”
Adrian nodded.
“It was for whoever could prove the heir was being sabotaged.”
Dominic stared.
“So Ellie was never the target.”
“No.”
“She was the witness.”
Adrian looked at the wooden latch.
“She was the one person nobody thought could understand the trap.”
Dominic looked at Ellie.
The little girl smiled.
Eleanor stepped closer.
“She found what grown men refused to see.”
Dominic felt the anger inside him begin to change.
Not disappear.
Focus.
He turned toward Elliot.
“You lost.”
His father shook his head.
“No.”
Dominic looked at Arthur.
“You're done.”
Arthur nodded.
At Mercer.
“You're going to tell the truth.”
Mercer lowered his head.
“Yes.”
At Adrian.
“You're staying.”
Adrian looked surprised.
“You're asking me?”
Dominic shook his head.
“I'm telling you.”
Then the room filled with sirens.
Police vehicles surrounded the estate.
Vincent looked at his phone.
“The evidence was released.”
Dominic turned.
“By whom?”
Vincent looked at Ellie.
Then smiled slightly.
“She triggered the final upload.”
Everyone stared.
Ellie held up the wooden latch.
She clicked it shut.
Somewhere inside the estate, a hidden computer began uploading the complete ledger.
Every name.
Every transaction.
Every false medical record.
Every forged signature.
Every secret.
The Vale dynasty had spent decades burying its own skeletons.
Now the floorboards were opening.
Arthur was arrested first.
Mercer surrendered.
Gideon Shaw disappeared before police could reach him.
Elliot Vale was taken into custody.
Daniel survived.
Adrian remained.
Julian disappeared for two days, then returned voluntarily.
Clare finally told Ellie the truth about her father.
And Dominic?
Six weeks later, he walked without a cane.
Not perfectly.
Not quickly.
But on his own.
He returned to the great room.
The same marble floor.
The same conference-room doors.
The same silence.
Ellie sat nearby with her wooden latch.
Dominic looked at the little toy.
“You know,” he said, “you may have saved my life.”
Ellie shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
She clicked the latch.
“I just noticed it was wrong.”
Dominic smiled.
“That might be the same thing.”
Then the front doors opened.
Vincent rushed inside.
“Sir.”
Dominic turned.
“What is it?”
Vincent handed him an envelope.
No sender.
No stamp.
Only six words on the front.
YOU FOUND THE FIRST TRAP.
Dominic opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Eleanor Vale.
Standing beside a man Dominic had never seen.
On the back:
THE SECOND TRAP HAS ALREADY BEEN SPRUNG.
Dominic looked toward the windows.
Outside, a black car was waiting.
The driver lowered his window.
For one second, Dominic saw the face of the man behind the wheel.
Daniel.
No.
Not Daniel.
Someone who looked exactly like him.
Dominic ran toward the door.
But the car was already moving.
Ellie stood behind him.
Her wooden latch clicked.
Once.
Twice.
Then she whispered:
“Mr. Dominic…”
He turned.
“What?”
She pointed to the photograph.
“There are two daddies.”
Dominic looked at the image again.
There were two men standing behind Eleanor Vale.
Both had Daniel Rowan's face.
His blood ran cold.
The first trap had been about Dominic losing his ability to stand.
The second was about making him question everyone who had ever stood beside him.
And somewhere beyond the estate gates, someone had just started the next move.
May you like
The little girl had found the first trap.
But the game was far from over.
