Chapter 14 - Smoke began filling the hallway.“They're burning the building,” Vincent shouted.

Dominic grabbed the envelope.

Adrian forced the vault door.

Julian kicked a ventilation panel open.

Clare held Ellie close.

Daniel tried to stand.

Dominic pulled him up.

“Can you walk?”

“Not well.”

“Neither can I.”

They moved.

The smoke grew thicker.

Someone had blocked the main exits.

Vincent found an old service tunnel.

They crawled through.

Behind them, flames swallowed the hospital.

Outside, Dominic opened the envelope.

Inside was a list.

Not names.

Locations.

Three properties.

Three vaults.

Three parts of the truth.

Adrian studied it.

“Your father distributed the evidence.”

“Why?”

“To ensure nobody could destroy everything at once.”

Julian looked at the final line.

“Only one location is still active.”

“Where?”

Julian pointed.

“The Vale estate.”

Dominic stared.

“We're going back?”

“Yes.”

The estate looked abandoned when they returned.

Too quiet.

The security team was gone.

The council members had disappeared.

Arthur was missing.

And every clock in the house had stopped at the same time.

2:17 a.m.

Dominic entered the great room.

His cane struck marble.

One tap.

A light came on.

Then another.

At the end of the room stood Arthur.

He looked exhausted.

Dominic approached.

“Where is everyone?”

Arthur didn't answer.

Instead, he placed a gun on the table.

“I'm done.”

Dominic stared.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

Arthur looked at him.

“You shouldn't.”

He pushed a folder toward Dominic.

Inside were proof of payments to Crane.

Mercer's forged credentials.

The brace instructions.

The crash sabotage.

Everything.

Dominic flipped through it.

Then stopped.

Arthur's name appeared on every major order.

Dominic looked up.

“You did this.”

Arthur nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Because your father owned me.”

Dominic said nothing.

Arthur continued.

“He saved my life twenty-five years ago.”

“And you repaid him by destroying his son?”

“He told me you would eventually destroy the family.”

“He believed that about everyone.”

Arthur nodded.

“I know.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“Where is my father?”

Arthur looked at the ceiling.

“He's here.”

Dominic froze.

“What?”

“Below us.”

Vincent immediately checked the basement plans.

A hidden elevator existed beneath the great room.

They found it.

The elevator descended.

Past the wine cellar.

Past the security vault.

Far below.

The doors opened into a massive underground chamber.

At the center stood Elliot Vale.

Alive.

Older.

Connected to medical equipment.

Dominic stared.

His father smiled.

“You came.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“You destroyed everyone.”

“I prepared them.”

“You used me.”

“I trained you.”

“You broke my leg.”

“I measured your will.”

Dominic's voice shook with anger.

“You kidnapped my brother.”

“I preserved him.”

“You erased Julian.”

“I protected the bloodline.”

“You almost killed Ellie.”

Elliot's expression changed.

“I never intended to kill her.”

Dominic looked at him.

“You built a trap around a four-year-old child.”

“I built a test around the family.”

Dominic shook his head.

“What's the point?”

Elliot gestured toward the chamber.

“Your organization is collapsing.”

“I don't care.”

“You will.”

“I don't.”

Elliot smiled.

“Then why are you still here?”

Dominic glanced around.

Because he needed answers.

Because he wanted the truth.

Because every person he loved had been used.

And because some part of him still wanted his father to explain why.

Then Ellie stepped forward.

She held out the wooden latch.

Elliot looked at it.

His face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“Where did you get that?”

Ellie answered:

“Daddy.”

Elliot stared at Daniel.

Daniel whispered:

“She knows.”

“Knows what?”

Daniel pointed toward the wall.

“Everything.”

A hidden panel opened.

Behind it was a final screen.

A recording began.

Not Elliot.

A woman.

Dominic had never seen her.

But Adrian recognized her immediately.

“Mother.”

The woman looked into the camera.

“Elliot is lying.”

Dominic stared.

The recording continued.

“He didn't create the trust.”

“He didn't create the experiments.”

“He wasn't the first.”

The screen went black.

Then one final sentence appeared.

THE FIRST VALE IS STILL ALIVE.

Everyone looked at Elliot.

He whispered:

“No.”

The chamber lights went out.

A door opened behind them.

Footsteps approached.

Slow.

Measured.

One tap against the floor.

Then another.

Dominic's blood ran cold.

May you like

The sound was familiar.

A cane.
