Chapter 3 - The Woman in the Security FootageThe archive room burned for six minutes before the sprinklers finally activated.

Six minutes was enough.

The fire destroyed dozens of boxes.

Old contracts.

Medical records.

Photographs.

Household logs.

And whatever else somebody had wanted erased.

But they made one mistake.

They forgot the cameras.

Alexander sat in the security room at 2:13 in the morning, watching footage from the corridor.

I stood behind him.

Noah was asleep in another room with a security guard outside.

The footage began.

A woman entered the archive corridor.

Black coat.

Black gloves.

No face visible.

Alexander leaned closer.

“She knew where the cameras were.”

“Yes.”

“She avoided the first four.”

“Yes.”

“She wasn't afraid of being recorded.”

“She knew the blind spots.”

He paused.

“Who has access to the security map?”

Halbrook looked toward Eleanor.

She said nothing.

Alexander rewound.

The woman entered at 11:48.

She left at 11:54.

Exactly six minutes.

“She knew the fire system delay,” Alexander said.

I stared at the screen.

Then I saw something.

“Stop.”

He froze the frame.

“What?”

“Zoom in.”

Security enlarged the image.

The woman's right hand was visible.

A ring.

I knew that ring.

My stomach twisted.

“That's Eleanor's.”

Alexander looked at his mother.

She immediately said, “That is absurd.”

He didn't answer.

Instead, he asked security:

“Where is my mother’s jewelry box?”

“Upstairs.”

“Bring it.”

Ten minutes later, the ring was missing.

Eleanor's face changed.

Alexander looked at her.

“Did you leave the house tonight?”

“No.”

“Then why is your ring in this footage?”

“I lost it weeks ago.”

“Convenient.”

She slapped him.

The sound echoed in the small room.

Everyone froze.

Eleanor stared at her son.

“You will not speak to me like that.”

Alexander didn't react.

He simply said:

“From this moment onward, my mother has no access to any Sterling property.”

Eleanor looked at me.

“This is because of her.”

Alexander answered:

“This is because of you.”

She turned and left.

Halbrook followed.

I watched them disappear.

Then Alexander sat back down.

He looked exhausted.

“Tell me everything.”

I shook my head.

“I don't know everything.”

“Then tell me what you know.”

I looked toward the monitor.

“I found your wife's study by accident.”

His eyebrows lifted.

“The room was supposed to be sealed.”

“I know.”

“Why were you there?”

“I was looking for Noah.”

“When?”

“Three nights ago.”

“What did you find?”

I hesitated.

“A hidden drawer.”

His face tightened.

“What was inside?”

“A letter.”

“From my wife?”

“Yes.”

“What did it say?”

I reached inside my apron.

I had kept it there for three days.

Even after deciding to resign.

Even after trying to convince myself that I should forget everything.

I handed it to him.

Alexander unfolded it.

His eyes moved slowly across the page.

Then he stopped.

“What the hell?”

I looked away.

He read aloud.

“Emma, if you ever return to this house, it means they failed to keep my son away from you.”

He looked at me.

“Return?”

I swallowed.

“I had been here before.”

“When?”

“Years ago.”

“How many?”

“Seven.”

His face went blank.

“Seven years ago, my wife was alive.”

“Yes.”

“You met her.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because she told me not to.”

Alexander stared at me.

“What did she ask you to do?”

“Protect Noah.”

His voice cracked.

“From whom?”

I couldn't answer.

Then the office door opened.

Noah stood there.

Barefoot.

Tears streaming down his face.

“Emma.”

I rushed to him.

“What happened?”

He looked at Alexander.

Then he whispered:

“I remember the night Mommy disappeared.”

I froze.

Alexander crouched in front of him.

“What night?”

Noah pointed toward the west hallway.

“The night Grandma told me to stay in the closet.”

Alexander turned pale.

Noah continued.

“Then Mommy screamed.”

The room became silent.

I held Noah tighter.

Alexander whispered:

“What did you hear?”

Noah closed his eyes.

“A man.”

“What man?”

“He said…”

Noah began trembling.

I wrapped my arms around him.

Alexander waited.

Noah finally whispered:

“She's going to tell him.”

Alexander's face changed.

“Tell who?”

Noah opened his eyes.

“Daddy.”

I realized then that the biggest secret wasn't who had killed Alexander’s wife.

It was who she had been trying to expose.

And whoever that person was…

He was still inside the Sterling family.
