Chapter 14 - The Last Sterling SecretThe fire spread faster than it should have.

Too fast.
The sprinklers were disabled.
The emergency doors were locked.
Someone had planned every second.
Eleanor stood at the end of the corridor.
“Why?” Alexander shouted.
She looked at him.
“Because the truth destroys families.”
“You already destroyed ours.”
“No.”
She smiled.
“Your father did.”
Nathaniel appeared behind her.
My blood froze.
He had been waiting.
Eleanor dropped the lighter.
Nathaniel walked forward.
“Come with me, Emma.”
“No.”
“You have something that belongs to me.”
“I don't have anything.”
“Yes.”
He looked at my mother's pocket.
“The original trust.”
My mother pulled it out.
Nathaniel laughed.
“Exactly.”
Alexander stepped in front of him.
“You're finished.”
Nathaniel looked amused.
“Do you know what happens when the trust is activated?”
“No.”
“It doesn't transfer control to Emma.”
Alexander frowned.
“It transfers control to the person legally recognized as the family guardian.”
“Which is me?”
Nathaniel shook his head.
“Wrong.”
He looked toward Lily.
“It is her.”
Everyone froze.
Lily stepped back.
“No.”
Nathaniel nodded.
“Your father wrote the original document before he died.”
“He didn't die,” my mother said.
Nathaniel smiled.
“Exactly.”
I understood.
The public death had been fabricated.
The old man, the cancer, the funeral, the grave.
All a carefully constructed disappearance.
Nathaniel had spent years controlling the family from the shadows.
But one detail remained.
“What happened to the real trust?” I asked.
Nathaniel looked at me.
“Your mother took it.”
“She copied it.”
“She stole it.”
“No.”
I stepped forward.
“She protected it.”
Nathaniel's expression hardened.
My mother pulled a small envelope from her coat.
She handed it to me.
“Your sister knows what to do.”
Lucy nodded.
She took out her phone.
“We already sent copies.”
Nathaniel's smile disappeared.
“To whom?”
“Everyone.”
A second later, dozens of phones began ringing.
News outlets.
Federal investigators.
Financial regulators.
Lawyers.
Judges.
Every person who needed to see the evidence had received it.
Nathaniel stared at Lucy.
“You think this changes anything?”
Lucy answered:
“Yes.”
He pulled a gun.
Alexander moved.
So did I.
A shot rang out.
Lily screamed.
Nathaniel dropped.
For one terrible second, I thought someone had been hit.
Then Eleanor fell beside him.
She had stepped in front of the bullet.
Nathaniel stared at her.
“Why?”
Eleanor laughed weakly.
“Because I finally chose my family.”
She collapsed.
Nathaniel looked broken for the first time.
Police stormed the hallway.
They surrounded him.
He dropped the weapon.
As officers handcuffed him, he looked at me.
“You think you've won.”
I stared.
“What do you know?”
He smiled.
“Ask Alexander why his wife was really killed.”
My heart stopped.
Alexander looked at him.
“You killed her.”
Nathaniel shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed at Eleanor.
“She did.”
Everyone looked at her.
Eleanor's eyes opened.
She whispered:
“I didn't.”
Then she looked at me.
“Your mother did.”
The room went silent.
My mother stepped backward.
“No.”
Eleanor's final words were barely audible.
“She asked me to do it.”
Alexander looked at my mother.
My mother began crying.
And for the first time, I saw fear on her face.
May you like
Not because Nathaniel had been caught.
Because the final secret had finally come out.
