CHAPTER 4: THE FILE THAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

The sentence remained hanging in the air.
Six days before Mateo was born…
The records were deleted.
Not after he became sick.
Not after the symptoms appeared.
Before anyone knew there was a problem.
Before anyone knew there was something to hide.
Nicolás stared at the phone in his hand.
For years, people had feared him because he was always ten steps ahead.
He predicted market crashes.
He predicted betrayals.
He predicted enemies before they revealed themselves.
But this…
This was different.
Because someone had been planning around his own family.
Around his own child.
And he had not seen it.
That was the one thing Nicolás Velasco could not accept.
“How?”
His voice was low.
Everyone looked at him.
“How does someone erase medical records from a private hospital?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew the answer.
Money.
Influence.
Access.
The same weapons Nicolás used every day.
Except now…
Someone else was using them against him.
The security chief arrived twenty minutes later carrying a black folder.
His name was Rafael Cruz.
He had worked for Nicolás for twelve years.
Former military.
A man who rarely showed emotion.
But today, even he looked uncomfortable.
“I checked everything personally.”
Nicolás opened the folder.
Inside were printed documents.
Medical histories.
Hospital access logs.
Employee records.
Sofía stood beside him.
“What did you find?”
Rafael looked at her.
Then at Nicolás.
“Someone inside the hospital system accessed Mateo’s file before his birth.”
Valeria covered her mouth.
“That makes no sense.”
Rafael placed a document on the table.
“Someone created a patient profile under Mateo’s name before he was born.”
Silence.
A baby who did not exist yet…
Already had a file.
Nicolás slowly turned the page.
The handwriting.
The signatures.
The authorization codes.
Everything looked official.
Everything looked real.
Except one thing.
The person who approved the file.
Sofía leaned closer.
Then froze.
“What?”
Nicolás noticed her reaction.
“You recognize something?”
She pointed at the signature.
“This doctor.”
She looked at him.
“Dr. Gabriel Ortega.”
The room became colder.
The same man.
The same doctor.
The one Leonor had recommended.
The one connected to Mateo’s missing records.
Nicolás looked toward his mother.
“Mother.”
Leonor did not answer.
For the first time, the powerful matriarch of the Velasco family looked old.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like someone who had carried a secret for too long.
“You knew.”
Nicolás’s voice was almost a whisper.
Leonor looked at him.
“I knew Gabriel.”
“That was not my question.”
A long silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
Valeria stepped back.
“Doña Leonor…”
“I did not know what he was doing.”
Nobody believed the sentence immediately.
Not because Leonor was lying.
Because the truth was more complicated.
Sofía had seen this many times.
People did not always participate in terrible things.
Sometimes they simply opened the door.
And someone else walked through.
“What exactly did you know?” Sofía asked.
Leonor looked at her.
“I knew Gabriel was interested in rare pediatric conditions.”
“And?”
“And I knew he believed modern medicine ignored environmental causes.”
Sofía frowned.
“That sounds harmless.”
“It was not.”
Leonor’s eyes lowered.
“He became obsessed.”
“With what?”
“With proving that wealthy families could create illnesses without realizing it.”
Nicolás looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
Leonor looked around the room.
“At first, Gabriel claimed luxury environments were dangerous.”
She paused.
“Imported materials. Artificial fragrances. Chemical treatments.”
Sofía nodded slowly.
“That part was true.”
“Yes.”
Leonor looked at her.
“But then his methods changed.”
“How?”
“He stopped studying.”
Her voice became quieter.
“He started experimenting.”
The word changed the atmosphere.
Experimenting.
Not researching.
Not testing.
Experimenting.
“With children?” Valeria whispered.
Leonor did not answer.
She did not need to.
That night, Nicolás went alone to the basement archives.
The Velasco mansion had rooms nobody knew existed.
Old documents.
Family records.
Business history.
Secrets.
Every powerful family had them.
The difference was whether those secrets stayed buried.
Rafael followed him.
“We should not be here without Sofía.”
Nicolás ignored him.
“She knows medicine.”
He opened an old cabinet.
“I know my family.”
Inside were dozens of files.
Contracts.
Photographs.
Letters.
Then he found one.
A medical research agreement.
Twenty years old.
The name on it made him stop.
Gabriel Ortega.
But that was impossible.
Gabriel had been a respected doctor.
A man with awards.
A man who appeared on television.
A man trusted by wealthy families.
Why would his name be hidden in old Velasco files?
Nicolás opened the document.
The first page was ordinary.
The second page was not.
Project name:
The Pure Environment Study.
Participants:
Private families.
Children.
Long-term observation.
Nicolás felt his stomach tighten.
He turned the page.
Then another.
And another.
Until he reached the final section.
The list of children involved.
His eyes scanned the names.
Then stopped.
Because one name was there.
A name he recognized.
A name that made him forget how to breathe.
Mateo Velasco.
But the date was impossible.
The study began…
Before Mateo was born.
Upstairs, Sofía was checking Mateo’s condition.
The baby was sleeping peacefully.
For the first time in weeks.
Valeria sat beside him.
“Do you think Nicolás believes me?”
Sofía looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
“That I did not know.”
Sofía studied her face.
“You are afraid he does not trust you.”
Valeria smiled sadly.
“Trust is difficult in this family.”
“Why?”
“Because everyone has something to hide.”
Before Sofía could respond…
Mateo suddenly opened his eyes.
He looked toward the hallway.
Then started crying.
Not loudly.
Not from pain.
From recognition.
Sofía followed his gaze.
Someone was standing outside.
A silhouette.
Watching.
She walked toward the door.
“Who is there?”
The person moved away.
Fast.
Sofía followed.
The hallway was empty.
But something was left behind.
A small envelope.
She picked it up.
No name.
No address.
Only three words written on the front.
ASK YOUR NURSE.
Her heart stopped.
Because the message was not for Nicolás.
Not for Valeria.
Not for Leonor.
It was for her.
Sofía opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
An old photograph.
A photograph of a woman holding a baby.
The baby was Mateo.
But the woman holding him…
Was not Valeria.
Sofía stared at the picture.
Because she knew that face.
She had seen it before.
Years ago.
In a hospital.
On a night she never forgot.
The woman in the photograph…
May you like
Was her own mother.
