CHAPTER 15: THE LAST VELASCO SECRET

The mansion fell silent.

Not the silence of fear.

The silence of disbelief.

A dead man had walked back into the place where everyone had buried his name.

Nicolás stared at him.

His father.

The man whose funeral he attended.

The man whose ashes he believed were scattered eight years ago.

The man whose death marked the beginning of his own rise.

Alive.

Standing.

Breathing.

Watching him.

“No…”

The word escaped Nicolás’s mouth.

His father smiled faintly.

“You always were the emotional one.”

That voice.

That same cold voice.

The voice from childhood.

The voice that made every room feel smaller.

Nicolás took one step forward.

“You died.”

“Yes.”

The answer was calm.

“I needed everyone to believe that.”

Sofía felt disgust.

Not surprise anymore.

Not confusion.

Only disgust.

Because after everything she had discovered…

She finally understood.

This man did not hide secrets.

He built them.

“Your father has been manipulating everything.”

Sofía’s voice cut through the room.

The old man looked at her.

Not with anger.

With curiosity.

“So you are Elena’s daughter.”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“You look like her.”

Sofía clenched her fists.

“Do not compare me to her.”

“Why?”

“Because my mother cared about people.”

The man’s smile disappeared slightly.

“And I cared about the future.”

“No.”

Sofía stepped closer.

“You cared about control.”

A long pause.

Then the old man laughed.

Not loudly.

Almost proudly.

“Your mother said the same thing.”

Everyone froze.

Nicolás looked at him.

“You knew Elena.”

“Yes.”

“You killed her.”

The old man did not answer immediately.

And that was enough.

Nicolás’s expression changed.

“You did.”

His father looked at him.

“You have no idea what happened.”

“Then tell me.”

The old man sighed.

“Your mother’s generation believed power came from money.”

He looked around the mansion.

“They were wrong.”

“Then what is power?”

His eyes moved toward Mateo.

“Survival.”

Dr. Herrera stepped forward.

“You ruined everything.”

The old man looked at him.

“Luis.”

The doctor froze.

“You are still alive.”

“Barely.”

A cold smile appeared.

“Cowards usually survive.”

The old man walked toward the hidden laboratory.

“Do you know what everyone misunderstood?”

Nobody answered.

“They thought I wanted a perfect child.”

He touched the old equipment.

“That was never the goal.”

Sofía frowned.

“Then what was?”

He looked directly at her.

“Adaptation.”

Silence.

“The world is changing.”

He continued.

“Chemicals. Pollution. Disease. Environmental collapse.”

His voice became passionate.

“Human beings are becoming weaker because they refuse to evolve.”

Nicolás stared.

“So you experimented on children?”

“I studied them.”

“You hurt them.”

The old man looked at him.

“Every great discovery has a cost.”

Sofía felt sick.

There it was.

The sentence every monster used.

A justification.

A way to turn cruelty into something noble.

Valeria stepped forward.

“And Adrian?”

The old man looked at her.

“Still asking about him?”

“Where is he?”

A strange expression crossed his face.

Almost sadness.

“Adrian was the closest.”

Nicolás froze.

“Closest to what?”

“To understanding.”

The old man looked at him.

“He was intelligent. Curious. Strong.”

“Then why erase him?”

A pause.

“Because he discovered the truth.”

Nicolás’s jaw tightened.

“What truth?”

The old man looked at him.

“That he was not the first Velasco child involved.”

Everyone became still.

Sofía looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

The old man turned toward her.

“It means Adrian was not Subject One.”

The room went cold.

“Then who was?”

The old man smiled.

“Your mother.”

Sofía froze.

“What?”

“Your mother was part of the original generation.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“She was a nurse.”

“She was much more than that.”

The old man looked at the files.

“Elena Reyes was the first person to prove the research worked.”

Sofía shook her head.

“My mother was normal.”

The old man laughed softly.

“Normal is a word people use when they do not understand something.”

Nicolás stepped between them.

“Enough.”

His father looked at him.

“You still protect her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she saved my son.”

A pause.

“And because she is a better person than all of us.”

For the first time…

The old man looked disappointed.

Not angry.

Disappointed.

“You sound like your brother.”

Nicolás froze.

“My brother?”

“Yes.”

“Adrian?”

The old man nodded.

“He also believed people mattered more than the family name.”

A strange sadness appeared.

“He was the only one who understood.”

Then the lights went out.

Again.

But this time, nobody panicked.

Everyone knew.

This mansion had always been full of shadows.

A gunshot echoed.

Everyone froze.

When emergency lights returned…

The old man was gone.

Not escaped.

Gone.

The window was closed.

The doors were locked.

Impossible.

Then Rafael shouted.

“Sir!”

Everyone turned.

A security monitor showed the hallway.

A figure walking.

Slowly.

Toward the nursery.

A man.

Older.

Scar above his eyebrow.

Gabriel Ortega.

Again.

Sofía’s face changed.

“He was working with him.”

Nicolás grabbed the weapon from Rafael.

“No.”

“What?”

“Gabriel was never working for my father.”

He looked at the screen.

“He was running from him.”

They reached the nursery.

The door was open.

Mateo was awake.

But he was not crying.

He was staring at someone.

A man standing beside the crib.

Gabriel Ortega.

Sofía stepped forward.

“Move away from him.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“I knew this moment would come.”

Nicolás raised the weapon.

“You are going to tell us everything.”

Gabriel looked at Mateo.

Then at Sofía.

“Your mother saved this child.”

A pause.

“But she could not save herself.”

Sofía’s eyes filled.

“Who killed her?”

Gabriel looked at Nicolás.

Then said:

“The same person who changed your life.”

Nicolás tightened his grip.

“My father?”

Gabriel nodded.

But then he added:

“Not only him.”

Everyone froze.

“What does that mean?”

Gabriel looked toward the hallway.

Toward the mansion.

Toward the family.

“Because the person who gave the final order…”

A pause.

“…was someone you trusted more than anyone.”

The footsteps echoed behind them.

Everyone turned.

A familiar figure appeared.

Someone who had cried beside Mateo.

Someone who had protected him.

Someone who had known the truth from the beginning.

Valeria.

But she was holding a file.

And inside that file was the final proof.

Gabriel whispered:

“She remembers now.”

Valeria looked at Nicolás.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.”

Nicolás stared.

“What did you do?”

Valeria opened the file.

The first page contained one sentence:

"MATERNAL CONSENT CONFIRMED."

Nicolás’s face changed.

Because the signature below belonged to the person he never expected.

May you like

VALERIA SERRANO.
